OT: 2013 MLB Discussion Thread

Agree with the Met poster on page 1, very excited for the season. No, I do not expect to make the playoffs, but it will be exciting to see the kids compete and hopefully stay somewhat competitive late. Last few years we have held our own until first west coast trip after ASB, so hoping to improve on that.

I will always be a Yankee hater, but I can't fault them for what they do.

I don't blindly hate the Yankees. They aren't breaking any rules. But certainly one would expect that a team that pays 3 players more than 1/3 of the league's teams entire payroll would expect that they are contending for, if not winning, a championship every year.

More to the point, big payrolls don't automatically translate to great rosters. The Yankees are essentially paying huge money for past performances rather than future production. A-Rod is $28 million dead weight. Teixeira makes $22.5 million and has been regressing for several years. Who really knows what Sabathia will do for his $23 million this year?

The Dodgers' payroll will be in the range of $220 million this year. You'd expect them to have a superstar at every position for that kind of money, but they don't. Crawford's contract is a joke. Gonzalez might be on the downside of his career already. Ethier's splits suggest a guy who should be a platoon hitter. Greinke's performances have never matched what the sabremetrics suggest about him. I don't think anyone would take their roster over the Nationals' roster.

Having money can make it easier to fill holes and cover up mistakes, but just throwing a lot of money around doesn't automatically get you anything. From 2005-2011 the Mets had an average payroll of $125 million and made the playoffs once. On the other hand, look at the continued success of the Rays. They've made the playoffs three times in the past five years with a payroll that never went over $73 million. Clearly, savvy management is a lot more valuable than massive payrolls.

Mets are gonna be an exciting team to watch soon. Three great young pitchers in Niese, Wheeler and Harvey, all with varying amounts of high potential. Then you have guys like Syndergaard and Montero in the minors, too.

The OF situation is dire but an infield of Ike, Wright, Murphy/whoever, Ruben, and D'Arnaud is sweet.

Not gonna lie, i'm more excited for when the young guns are called up then for the season in general. I'll mainly be focusing on if Ike can come back and play like second half Ike and if David's first half was a fluke or if he can still be a 6+ WAR player.

You should really mention Fulmer with Syndergaard, dude. Fulmer is a legit prospect, for sure.

It's going to be an exciting year. I'm hoping vets like Santana, Marcum, Buck, Lyon, etc have strong seasons so Sandy can sucker some GM at the deadline into flipping us some young outfield prospects.
 
Honestly im expecting a decent year from Duda..Its not a stretch for him to go 270..20..80...Dudes got crazy power..Captain Kirk in CF has legit potential too..RF who the hell knows?

Sadly, I think last year was the final year in this very long window of championship caliber teams for the Yankees during the Jeter era. I do in fact see some rough times ahead with all these injuries, but I can handle a 2 year retool to stock up the prospects and sign the necessary FAs. They've won me 5 years of trust with the 09 title and the deep runs after that.

The worst thing was the fan in the crowd. I understand the players going at it, emotions are high and Mexico is coming off of a huge win to get embarrassed by Canada, but it looked like a Canadian player got nailed with something. The bench clear is acceptable, the fan behavior absolutely wasn't.
 
Joe Torre made some ****ing terrible decisions for this game.

Victorino over Stanton?

And don't even get me started on some of the roster decisions...Hosmer shouldn't even sniff this tournament.

They didn't want Ike because he "strikes out too much." Meanwhile Hosmer strikes out at only a 5% less clip, walks less, and is garbage in the field. Bad decision.

I'm more peeved at the lineups, though.

They could have went with Swisher, Freeman, Goldscmidt, Laroche, etc.

Hosmer is not up to the caliber they need. One of those mentioned above owuld serve as a better player. Nonetheless they just took the lead and should close this out and move onto the next round.

Wright has looked awesome in the tourney. Cannot wait for him to play this season.

Getting out of the second round isn't good enough. They need to contend with Japan. Even with a lot of the big names declining to join(did Trout coming by to watch the game piss anybody else off? Don't show up if you decline representing your country), when you have R.A. Dickey, Gio Gonzalez, David Wright, Ryan Braun, Joe Mauer, Mike Stanton, Adam Jones and a few other top guys you should be contending.

The US has been mismanaged all tournament. If they lost/lose today it would've been/will be a disgrace.
 
Love Wright being referred to as "Captain America". Makes me think he is coming out like Kenny Powers did in EB&D. Flag as a cape and with Hulk Hogan's intro in the background.
