Largely, I just scratch off the 2006 draft since that was done about a month after DL took over as GM and he used Taylor's old scouting team, who were promptly dismissed shortly after. 2007 and onward was the Futa and Co. drafts.

So if you removed 2006, you could drop Braun and Andersen from Europe and our one QJAHL pick (and others as well).

I only didn't do that because I didn't want to cherry pick statistics.

After all, the scouting staff Lombardi inherited wasn't even fired until, I believe, February of 2007. So who knows how much of the staff was established when the new staff was hired. And then, of course, Lombardi said that it took a year or two before they really trusted each other and were on the same page.

Knowing all that, it seems a little off to discount one draft because of the staff, but not discount other drafts because the staff wasn't "ready." Which is why I included the 2006 draft.

I suppose. On the other hand, ever scouting department has someone leave and someone else join, or be expanded/shrank every year or two, so really, even scouting staffs are in a constant state of flux. I'm sure TG can state this as I bet he's experienced it.

I tend to differentiate based on who is in charge, which is Futa. We all like to give DL credit (myself included) but outside of the first round, it really is all on Futa and his staff. Even the 1st round is largely Futa, but DL may have a say. And since Futa came in in 2007, that's where I'll go with.

Doing a quick mock below, assuming we can trade Bernier for a mid 1rst round pick.

1rst round: Anthony Mantha F
2nd round: Hudson Fasching F
3rd round: Tommy Vanelli D
4th round: Marcus Hogberg G
4th round: Bogdan Yakimov F
4th round: Mitchell Wheaton D
5th round: Gabryel Boudreau F
6th round: Quentin Shore F
7th round: Anton Slepyshev F
7th round: Luka Gracnar G

Forward heavy, but 2 quality goalies, and two high potential D men.

Doubt we grab Slepyshev. DL only takes Russians who will come over and if he felt Slepyshev was going to come over we wouldn't have passed him over in 2012. So unless somethings changed, we won't be taking him this year.

We are in a position to take a flyer on Slepyshev. It would be good for Kitsyn and Slepy's development and relocation to compete in Manchester together. A pick is worth the risk

I'm fine with a 5th or later being used on him. I doubt we will though, since we had two seventh last year and traded one away rather than use it. Used the other on Nick Ebert, who was the NA version of Slepsyhev (1st round talent falling almost right off the board).

I think DL weeds out the guys who aren't 100% commited on coming to NA. Every Russian we have drafted has come to NA.

Not saying I disagree, because I don't, but I think that it's a good organizational fit. He's not small, he's a winger, we have a good relationship with Russians, and we can wait for him to finish his KHL contract.

You may be right, but does he want to come to NA? I mean, there has to be a reason every team passed on him over 200 times in total.

I don't know if it has any bearing, but last year, the CBA still gave teams 2 years to sign a player out of Europe, which... if Slepyshev still has a contract with the KHL, they wouldn't be able to sign him.

However, I thought I heard the new CBA this year gives teams 4 years to sign Europeans? If that's true, it's more likely DL may chance a late pick on him.

One player I'm interested in is Alex Coulombe. 6'4, 190 pound defenceman playing for Stanstead College in Quebec. Same place from where Jankowski was drafted. He is committed to the University of Vermont. Might play a year in the USHL first.
I project he could go late 3rd to early 6th, depending on how much a team values him. Thoughts?

Curious where you are getting the two years from? I thought it was longer than that... If it isn't then Kitsyn would already be a free agent wouldn't he? I thought the 2 years rule on players from Europe only applied to players that were RFA and signed in Europe, like Holloway.

Got him in the 2nd round of my draft rankings, which I post yearly on the Jets board. He's a smart player with good size, I like him as a reliable middle pairing type of potential guy.

The old CBA gave 2 years to get players out of Europe...with countries that HAD a transfer agreement. For leagues like KHL it is basically indefinitely teams hold their rights.

Two years is how it works, if said country has a transfer agreement. Not all of them had transfer agreements, including Russia and the KHL, which is why the Kings still maintain Kityn's rights. They maintain those rights indefinitely, so long as the country/league does not have a transfer agreement.

King'sPawn is right that the new CBA will have teams protecting players drafted out of Europe for 4 years. Note that all countries/leagues with the notable exception of KHL, have signed new transfer agreements. So players drafted out of anywhere in Europe EXCEPT the KHL will have their rights protected for 4 years. KHL will likely continue to be indefinite.

Now you are badly confused on RFA and signing in Europe. This is a whole other ball of wax. The 2 years protection is ONLY for unsigned draftees. RFA's are subject to standard rules of UFA/RFA status. It is hard to explain quickly, but short answer is that all RFA's become UFA's at age 27 (like Moller), or 25 if they have not played in sufficient games at the NHL level (like Holloway).

Its official, we have put together a jacket on Quinten Shore.

Not surprising really as several teams have too but with everything else going on we must at least think he is worth a mid pick.

If he falls to 4rth (which is possible) then we might take a runner on him.

We should draft him for his last name alone.

Any thoughts on these potential draftees? Looking at the stats alone, they seem like decent targets for LA.

Dillon Heatherington D Swift Current WHL
Chance Braid LW Prince Albert
Cole Linaker C Kelowna
Zane Jones LW Calgary

what does that term mean?

MN had it. When a team gets closer to the draft they build prospect info jackets. Its largely what I do for a living (in two stages, one is early on and just a general gathering of stats and then as the draft approaches a second more detail oriented gathering of every stat along with coaches notes and any media available.). Then they add in their own staff scouting reports along with any CSS etc reports.

They don't make one for every player in the draft or most teams don't and teams like the Kings only put together jackets (packets etc) on players that they intend on investing further time and interest in with the notion that they could consider him a draft able prospect. All of the players in the first two rounds or as seen to be so by CSS and the rest are all available to every team but after that it comes down to each teams own scouting staff and research. That and specialists who gather info for agencies and players.

Hey Tonelli, do you have any info on Nic Petan?

H e has average size but should fill out at 5'11". Has generational hands. The rest of his game is good to very good but not good enough to make him a superstar. His skating and balance are very good. He is a mid body balanced skater that generates his speed from his instep more so then his entire foot so he can get up to speed pretty well but tops out at average.

His balance is good enough to where he can pivot with the all but the very best of them. He is a good smart center who sees the ice really well. He can be overly aggressive with the puck and takes too many chances down low but he follows the play well enough to where his errors don't usually end up with him being burned.

A scout I know used the word "tenacious" to describe his play with the puck and that fits really well. He hangs on to the puck with the very best. I saw him a few times in Portland this season and he is one of those guys who stands out when he is on the ice.

His size is going to make him drop in the draft but that is a mistake. He is an honest 5'9" (and a little) and doesn't look small. I see him growing at least an inch and more than likely two. I saw him last season and he has grown an inch and a half since then.

If he were 6'2" he would be in the top 6 of this draft. He is a nice kid but a little hard to read. He is affable but a bit quiet.

The only other thing I had written on him is "Kid is full of hustle and compete". I like him but believe he will only be a center. I haven't seen him do very well when he shifted to the wing.

That is literally everything I have on the kid.

I am sure others will disagree but he sure looks like a special player to me. I see allot of similarities with Plekanec only with much more hustle.
