2013 Draft Thread Part IV - I Am Suffused with Great Uncertainty

This is really interesting considering I just read that article about how Sakic was one of the reasons Seth Jones got to where he is. (Popeye Jones was with the Nuggets when he ran into Sakic and asked his advice on how to get his kid into hockey and by all accounts Seth looked up to him)

I don't know why Sakic would put this news out there, except maybe to open up offers to trade down to 2, 3 or 4?

What do we do if Seth Jones falls to #9? :-)

start a bidding war to jump over the others and snag the top D.

But he has said he doesn't want to play in the AHL. What happens if he plays in the NHL and really struggles like most rookies do? Is Pete just supposed to keep playing him? Is he just supposed to leave him as a scratch? Or do you let him go back to the KHL and hope he's prepared to come back in a few years?

Then you send him to the AHL and if he refuses to play, you hold his rights for 3 more years where he isn't allowed to play anywhere, including the KHL.

He will report to the AHL, he may be bitter about it, but when he resumes his NHL career and realizes it made him better player, he'll be over it.

Ya I'm gonna call posturing. Although I think Mackinnon is a great player and I would take him with the first.

Certainly adds a little spice to the top of the Draft. Here's an interesting article from HF poster Renegade Stylings. He's an Avs fan and works for a WHL team (I think): http://whl-from-above.blogspot.ca/2013/06/source-barkov-is-true-draft-target-for.html

I've been told by a fairly good source that Finnish C Aleksander 'Sasha' Barkov is the target for the Colorado Avalanche as we approach the 2013 NHL Draft.

Or you can just let Nichuskin play in the KHL. It's really not a big deal to have him not make an NHL team and then have him play against men over in the KHL before trying to make the NHL again the next season.

I think most NHL teams will be factoring in the KHL factor very little for Nichuskin. He wants to play in the NHL and most of the best play in the NHL rather than overseas. If a NHL team thinks he's the best option as a player when they're drafting then I think they'll draft him and not pass him up due to the KHL.

Why do I have the feeling that the Avalanche are gonna be even more poorly run than they already are with Padtrick in there now? I mean maybe not as bad as the Canadiens were run 1-2 years ago, but maybe kind of a joke like the way Steve Yzerman runs the Lightning.

The Lightning should really be looking for Jones if he's still there. They already have one of the best offenses in the league, but their defense is hands down the worst in the league. Stevie Y thinks all he has to do is keep trading for these big mattress goalies, but the defense is so poor that it doesn't even matter if you got Lundqvist or Quick playing there. Yzerman has not been good, and if he doesn't fix things he's gonna be handed his walking papers like Guy was a few months ago. Or like Dallas did to Nieuwendyk not long ago.

Nichuskin can make the team this year. He is solid defensively, and very good on the forecheck. Great size for a youngster and a good skater.

It's curious, but I can understand if they have a chain of transactions to go along with bypassing Jones.

Stastny is in his contract year, so perhaps they were already prepping for life without him. They could look into trading him for a young defender and/or picks.

Hypothetically, does a Stastny for Tim Erixon type trade pass the sniff test? Columbus has Ryan Murray in waiting and could use a center. Colorado adds a young left handed D.

ROR might be on the way out soon too considering how poorly that went down this past season.

Avalanche might just go straight up with an odd #1 too depending on how teams behind them feel about moving around in the top 4. Remember that Hishon pick blindsided everyone.

Reading the scouting reports I never thought Seth was a slam dunk as #1.

Though I don't rule this out as a posturing tactic(although that too says Av's are not set on Jones).

And given Av's might be looking to add defensive help via other routes, this does open up trade possibilities.

Depends what you consider soon. I don't think they're allowed to trade him until February.

Part of me wants the Avalanche to fail cause I kinda think their downfall since Padtrick and Sakic retired has been hilarious. Their fall from one of the most successful franchises from 95-03, to being a joke of a franchise and perennial loser is satisfying to me. The fact they got the Jiggypuff and Padtrick now coaching makes them really easy to dislike too.

On the other hand, I want them to be successful cause that's one more team that the wiLOLd have to fight with. I also really like Varlamov too, but now they got Allaire in there too and I don't even wanna see what he comes out looking/playing like next year. They were my second favorite team for a little while there until we played them in the SCF. They were my west team as soon as Claude was traded there in 95-96. I still have Very fond memories of their 96 cup run.

If Barkov is selected #1 and NOT Drouin/MacKinnon, it would be a real head-scratcher.

New and much improved highlight video of Shinkaruk. Have to say his skating ability and shot look top notch.

Edit: Also saw this on the prospects board were a Slovakian poster said: "It looks like to the combination Marko Dano + New Jersey Devils.

Here is mentioned, that the Devils already invited Dano to their summer camp."

Article link he mentioned as his source :http://www.hokejportal.net/?q=clanok/olympijske-leto-vo-vysokych-tatrach-bez-satana-aj-halaka/47145

google translate says: "Early July have other obligations hockey and two young players Marek Hrivík and Marko Dano. "Both camps are offered in the NHL. Marek Hrivík a team New York Rangers and Mark Daňa invited the representative's from New Jersey," said national team manager"

I'm presuming Marko Dano and Mark Dana is the same person, lol.

It's hard to judge a player from a highlight reel. I'd be most interested in seeing how many shots he generates per game, but I can't find that stat anywhere.

I know that. Still, you get a small glimpse of what kind of a player he is. Yeah, that might be hard. Don't know wether the WHL keeps track of that, I know the Q does. Doubt there'd be any other sites keeping track.

Our staff is notorious for being very thorough during the interview process. In 2006, I vaguely remember Brian Strait having a number of interviews with the team and we didn't take him. Tim Erixon mentioned that he met with the Devils more than any other team and we didn't take him. Also in 2009, Tomas Tatar said he had a really good feeling about the Kings which led many to believe he'd go to LA #35; Instead the Kings picked Kyle Clifford while Tatar went a few picks later to Detroit.

We probably would have taken him in Round 3, but he went two picks before we had the chance and we ended up with the much-lamented Tulupov instead.

Why are people comparing Hunter to Parise? I keep seeing that and after watching that video they are not similar at all besides size. Hunter is pure skill

I don't see the Parise comparisons. I also saw one website comparing him to Evander Kane because of the natural goal scoring ability, but obviously that is a terrible comparison. I can't think about who he reminds me of.. it's bugging me so much!
