2013 Draft Thread Part IV - I Am Suffused with Great Uncertainty

Morrissey will be gone by 25, I have said quite a few times that we trade down for 2 first round picks and draft Morrissey and one of these forwards: Zykov/Mantha/hartman

I'd love to trade down and still get Zykov. I'm in this boat too, I think we should trade the 9th overall pick - either to move up to get one of the draft's true elite talents (1-8), or down to get multiple of the drafts second-tier talents (which I think basically includes everyone from 9-30).

Domi, Horvat or Shinkaruk with our 1st pick. Whether that be at 9# or a couple of spots lower, whatever.

Dickinson, Bailey, Dauphin, Poirier, Hartman if still available with our 2nd pick.

Make it happen Lou/Conte.

I would like to trade down also, but, like you said, the difference in talent between 10 and 30 or 40 is almost insignificant. So, if a trade were to happen, it would include the 9th and either another one of our picks, a prospect, or a roster player.

The trade that crosses my mind right now is trading the 9th and 39th picks to Calgary for the 22nd and 28th picks. I think Calgary would have to add a late pick to make it even, though.

With those two picks, we can surely get two of Lazar, Zykov, Morrissey, etc.

If we trade down at all I hope it's with CLB 9 for 14 and 27

There is no chance we'd get 2 firsts for the 1 we have. If we had a top 3-5 pick, we'd get that. Not for the #9. The value isn't there.

9 to CLB for the #14 and #44. If we took the 27 for 9, we'd get the 44 and their 4th & 6th as well (they dont have a 3rd or a 5th).

Im only for trading down if there is a distinct plan by this team. Stockpiling picks may be a smart move this year, but we need an impact player out of this draft, espc with no 1st next year.

I'd want to acquire an additional pick in any trade down. I wouldn't do 9 + 39 for 22 + 28, but I would do 9 for 14 + 27 (or maybe their highest 2nd).

Any GM would do that deal. Columbus have one of the shrewdest GMs in the game right now, and there's just no chance he's going to give up 2 firsts to move up 5 spots and barely into the top 10. The feasible deal with Columbus involving the 14 would be their 2nd (44) as well. Columbus are also divisional opponents now as well. It has to be taken into account.

Just spitballing here, but what if Columbus gives #14, #27 and # 105 to us for #9 and #39?

Then Columbus flips #9 and #44 to Carolina for #5?

Carolina - Trades down from 5 to 9 to pick a D-man and walks away with a 2nd rounder.
NJ - Trades down 5 spots, picks up a late 1st rounder in exchange for an early 2nd, adds a 4th rounder in the process.
Columbus - Gives up #14, #27, #44, #105 for #5 and #39

That's a bit more palatable from Columbus' POV. We're not going to get both 1sts for just the #9, but with the #39 included, I could see Columbus going for that.

As for the Carolina deal, I don't really care what they do lol, but yea that could potentially be done as well, but they may have to include more to get up to #5, possibly a future mid round pick. If we wanted to move up to #5, it would cost us the #9 and #39 I believe + the possibility of a future.

That's a lot of trades that would have to be worked out during the first 4 picks.

Has there been a rumor or something about Columbus looking to move up?

How many youtube videos did you watch to conclude that Merrill is slow?

I do not know how many I have watched, but I do remember watching him in the prospects game that they posted on the website last off-season and in the WJC's either this year or last.

That is just the way he plays the game, calm and poised. Of course, I do not know how he has progressed since then, because it was such a long time ago, and there are no decent videos of him playing in Albany.

I haven't seen any Albany games but I've seen enough WJC and Michigan games to tell you he's not slow. He's not a Karlsson time burner, but you don't need to be fast to be an elite D-man. His playstyle isn't reliant on speed.

Well the 3 teams have a week to plan things out if they all wanted to go down this path. Can easily hit a killswitch if player X gets taken before #5.

Just speculation. Columbus is a decent team, but no elite talent. It's just a bunch of depth players. Could use someone like Nichushkin if they aren't afraid of another Zherdev or Filatov situation.

Well, you have to be a little fast to be an elite defenseman.

Anyway, I agree with you, I am not saying that he cannot go fast, just that he usually keeps himself so well positioned, that he never has to rush anywhere. That makes him look slow, but really he is just a step ahead of everyone.
