What I have heard about camp is that nobody is a lock outside of our core and that there are at least three spots in particular that are up for grabs. By the end of camp we will have our bottom D set, our second line LW set and our 3rd line LW set.

Going into camp I heard that Cliffy and King are in head to head competition for the 3rdLW spot and that we have two kids who might be able to step into that slot.

I will post more later when my computer isn't acting up. I guess lack of use is causing my macbook fits.

It's not inactivity ruining your Mac. It's the fact that it's a Mac. ;)

The 4th line isn't the shutdown or checking line, that's the 3rd line. The 4th is primarily an energy line that is only out there for a few shifts per period, to give the other lines a break. And they'd never be out vs a top line, unless the other coach was able to do that on a faceoff.

Thanks for that clarification... If you want to get technical next year a line of Carcillo/Stoll/Lewis would be the 3rd line over Pearson/Vey/Toffoli because of the lack of experience of that second line.... Also King/Stoll/Lewis is the Kings current shut down line... But you switch Carcillo for King move the line on a piece of paper and it's an "energy" line? :shakehead....

And they'd never be out vs a top line.... if that's true cut Carcillo now. Carcillo was brought in to injury people right? So if he isn't playing against the top lines he is a waste.... Sharks win if Torres hit Carter, Kopitar.....

Also was it Utah talking about Carcillo out scoring the rest of the 4th line? Carcillo is in fact tied with Nolan for goals in the last 2 years.

That's disappointing. Was hoping for a line up of
King/Stoll/Lewis
Clifford/Vey/Toffoli
for the bottom six.

Clifford going to the 3rd line would make me think they'd run Clifford/Stoll/Toffoli.... Maybe Stoll's offense will pick up with Clifford/Toffoli instead of King and Lewis.

Clifford/Stoll/Toffoli would also leave
King,Carcillo/Fraser/Lewis,Nolan... Just not pretty any way you arrange it.

Why would you put Toffoli on the 4th line?

Why would you put Toffoli on the 4th line?

Think we need to move away from labeling the lines. I mean who cares really.... Is Brown/Kopitar/Williams or Frattin/Richards/Carter the first line? Who's the second... do you base it off ice time, scoring, a piece of paper Sutter has some names scribbled on? I don't really care. In fact I believe Sutter has said as much in the past. I'll look for the quote later... he said something like he didn't like labeling someone a 4th line player or something.

Also the Kings put a physical player on the ice at most times during the game. This causes 2 changes... 1 other teams have trouble sheltering their skill forwards from physical play. Like Brown flattening the Sedin back in the cup run. 2 having a 4th line of physical guys is unnecessary because the Kings already have a physical player on every line.

So back to the ? Why put Toffoli on the 4th line.
-Is King/Stoll/Lewis 3rd or 4th line over Cliffor/Vey/Toffoli.... I don't really care, but next year I would have to say because Stoll has more experience over Vey at center in the NHL. I would label Stoll's line as the 3rd. The year after if Vey were to make the team and do well I could see Clifford/Vey/Toffoli be considered a 3rd line over Stoll's. Really does any of what I just typed matter.. No...

-I would put Toffoli with Vey because they have shown some chemistry at the AHL level. Their line did quite well last year. Throwing Vey/Toffoli out there for a few games together to see if anything carries over wouldn't be a bad gamble. Put Clifford on there (who I believe has more upside then a 4th liner) and now you have a physical player on the line who has some offensive abilities. It would be Vey's first time up in the NHL he may need time to adjust to the game so that is why this could be considered a 4th line. If Vey adapts well and isn't a defensive liability then the minutes for that line go up. Best case scenario Clifford/Vey/Toffoli earn more time during the game and Sutter doesn't have to ride players like Kopitar as hard. Kinda like when Doughty started playing better after Green came back because his time was cut down and he was exhausted at the end of the game.

-I would rather see Clifford/Vey/Toffoli (4ht line) then King/Stoll/Toffoli (3rd line). King/Stoll/Lewis is a line that worked well for the Kings last year. Not much scoring upside.

-The downside to bringing Vey up is losing Fraser. Stoll's roll will need to be replaced at some point... year, 2,3... Fraser isn't going to replace him so the Kings need to start bringing along a replacement for him. Is Vey going to be that replacement? Who knows, but we won't know till he's given a shot.

8 D to start the year??
The Mayor John Hoven ‏@mayorNHL 27m
Sutter seemed to indicate #LAKings will start with 8 D-men (was assumption, as a hedge on Mitchell), but didn't confirm when asked directly.

Can someone tell me who the 8 guys might be, and then who most likely are the top six? Thank you.

Extra: Martinez, Ellerby

Just curious if it is accurate.

I would think shultz would make it over ellerby otherwise why was he signed?

Tbh, I honestly believe that the Kings would do just fine without King and Fraser..
(Meaning that we should trade them)

This is how I feel it would look like without them. (Still a very good roster Imo)

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
Frattin-Richards-Carter
Clifford-Stoll-Toffoli
Carcillo-Lewis/Andreoff-Nolan

Doesn't look bad, but King/Nolan are the only 2 in the 230+ range. Going up against guys like Burns/Thorton, Getslaf/Penner with 200-210lb guys may be hard. Kopies in the 220's I guess.

From memory I believe Kopitar,Nolan,Clifford,Greene,Doughty,Regher,Mitchell,Shultz,Ellerby are all 210+ pounds but I could be wrong.. have bad memory.

Well here's the quote from Kings insider.
http://lakingsinsider.com/2013/09/14/september-14-practice-quotes-darryl-sutter/

"On how he evaluates the competition on defense:
Well, if we’re healthy, nobody’s taking Drew’s place. Nobody’s taking Slava’s place. Nobody’s taking Greener’s place. Nobody’s taking Robyn’s place. After that, there’s holes there. There’s boxes that don’t have a name in there yet. So, who’s going to be Drew’s partner? Who’s going to be Slava’s partner? Who’s going to be Greener’s partner, and who’s going to be our seventh guy, and who’s going to be our eighth guy? Because you can’t have nine. [Reporter: So is the thought to start the year with eight defensemen?] I really don’t know that yet. I mean, if you start with eight, then you’re going 13 forwards, so I really don’t know. We’re not to that point yet."

If you plug that into Google's Darryl Sutter translator...
Doughty/Regehr

### is Mitchel if healthy. If he isn't???
**** is Muzzin/Martinez/Ellerby
Schultz is in the mix too.

Also sounds like Sutter isn't sold on 8D to start the year. I may not be reading/comprehending the quote properly... Google's Sutter translator could be off too.

I was mostly focusing on the offense.

Just have concerns about Kopi being the biggest, Nolan being the second biggest (was getting benched end of last year) and Stoll being the 3rd largest at 213 for forwards.

*edit: thought Nolan was 230 the link has him at 221lbs

Yeaa.. for forwards were not that heavy, but luckily our D is pretty big. But when you look at the Pacific Division the Kings play the biggest and toughess.

Seriously, I made a bet with a friend that Schultz is in the press box on opening night. One ticket to a Caps game, but more importantly my PRIDE, is on the line here. ;)

If he is waived by January I get two tickets!!

Will check back for updates on how he is doing.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's waived by opening night.

Ellerby and Schultz will duke it out for the 8th D-man spot.

toffoli on the 4th line?? some of you guys have gone off the deep end. why would we give our most naturally gifted goal scorer a max of 10 minutes a night? #offseasonproblems

I didn't know there was rule that said only 10 minutes a night for fourth lines. You're right though we definitely need Nolan and Fraser playing those 10 minutes since they are such quality players right? The stuff some people say like there is arule to a fourth lline . this isn't old school hockey. Move on.
