Why would you put Toffoli on the 4th line?
Think we need to move away from labeling the lines. I mean who cares really.... Is Brown/Kopitar/Williams or Frattin/Richards/Carter the first line? Who's the second... do you base it off ice time, scoring, a piece of paper Sutter has some names scribbled on? I don't really care. In fact I believe Sutter has said as much in the past. I'll look for the quote later... he said something like he didn't like labeling someone a 4th line player or something.
Also the Kings put a physical player on the ice at most times during the game. This causes 2 changes... 1 other teams have trouble sheltering their skill forwards from physical play. Like Brown flattening the Sedin back in the cup run. 2 having a 4th line of physical guys is unnecessary because the Kings already have a physical player on every line.
So back to the ? Why put Toffoli on the 4th line.
-Is King/Stoll/Lewis 3rd or 4th line over Cliffor/Vey/Toffoli.... I don't really care, but next year I would have to say because Stoll has more experience over Vey at center in the NHL. I would label Stoll's line as the 3rd. The year after if Vey were to make the team and do well I could see Clifford/Vey/Toffoli be considered a 3rd line over Stoll's. Really does any of what I just typed matter.. No...
-I would put Toffoli with Vey because they have shown some chemistry at the AHL level. Their line did quite well last year. Throwing Vey/Toffoli out there for a few games together to see if anything carries over wouldn't be a bad gamble. Put Clifford on there (who I believe has more upside then a 4th liner) and now you have a physical player on the line who has some offensive abilities. It would be Vey's first time up in the NHL he may need time to adjust to the game so that is why this could be considered a 4th line. If Vey adapts well and isn't a defensive liability then the minutes for that line go up. Best case scenario Clifford/Vey/Toffoli earn more time during the game and Sutter doesn't have to ride players like Kopitar as hard. Kinda like when Doughty started playing better after Green came back because his time was cut down and he was exhausted at the end of the game.
-I would rather see Clifford/Vey/Toffoli (4ht line) then King/Stoll/Toffoli (3rd line). King/Stoll/Lewis is a line that worked well for the Kings last year. Not much scoring upside.
-The downside to bringing Vey up is losing Fraser. Stoll's roll will need to be replaced at some point... year, 2,3... Fraser isn't going to replace him so the Kings need to start bringing along a replacement for him. Is Vey going to be that replacement? Who knows, but we won't know till he's given a shot.
