The stats in the first post are updated.

Boo Nieves is on a bit of a cold streak, as he's scoreless in his past 4 games. Michigan is pretty talented overall, so it's only a matter of time before he starts getting some bounces and picking up the points. He's looked fine the two times I've seen him this year.

Steven Fogarty still has just 2 points in 8 games. We know the kid can play the defensive center role very well, but I'm really hoping that his offense comes around as well. So far, the results haven't been there.

Imagine if Crosby and Ovechkin had a kid and Pavel Datsyuk babysat him. Basically, a better version of Dustin Rose.

Good ole Dusty Rose, the prospect everyone will know ! Puck poise, enough said.

Still early with Fogarty. ND has played the majority of their early games on the road, sound familiar ? And in their two home games Fogarty scored his two points. Since ND's 4-0 season opening victory they've averaged under 3 goals for per game. Sam Herr leads the team with 5 goals, he had none in 13 games last year. Still, they are considered a top ranked team after 8 games.

I've watched a couple Notre Dame games. Fogarty is playing the point on the PP and is starting to dictate the play. He's had a couple of "third assists" and set up a number of chances that weren't converted. Little unlucky at the moment but I'm still high on the kid.

Does fogarty have any grit to his game? His offensive numbers in college have been underwhelming to say the least. I'm curious as to why people are high on him.

For a 3rd round pick, he's been a surprisingly oft-debated prospect. I know some folks disagree with me, but here's why I'm high on him:

Initial scouting reports pegged him as a big kid who had a nice set of offensive tools but needed work on his defensive game and skating. Since being drafted, he's come a long, long way as a defensive player. Where as before he was likely considered a top-9 winger or bust due to his lack of defensive awareness, he's now established himself as a versatile player who could play both wing and center at a higher level should he make it that far.

Unfortunately, since he's remained as a center, he's been somewhat of a victim of seniority in the BCHL and NCAA. This year is the first year he's been really asked to be more than a shutdown center who contributes some secondary scoring. He's a key player for them and they need him to take the next step. So far he's been okay. I think he could have had a few more points on the board had his teammates capitalized on chances, but I think the points will come in time.

He's a very raw package, but the toolset is tantalizing. Size, strength, grit, defensive game, and a great sense for the game. What he needs to improve on is his quickness, offensive consistency, and quicker decision making. He absolutely man-handled kids in high school. Once he gets comfortable, I think we'll see him take a big leap forward.

I think his upside is a Michal Handzus kind of player with better vision. Big, strong and gritty, but not necessarily a "nasty" player.

I think Fogarty gets the attention that he does because he was drafted with the pick we got for Grachev. We're all still hoping that we'll get a player of value out of that.

Don't want to start a new thread, but the HF Fall Organizational Rankings are out. The Rangers are ranked 27th. While I don't think they are top 10, I thought they would come in the 11-20 range.

Probably because of our lack of goaltending prospects, mixed with not having an elite prospect of any sort.

27th, what the hell? That seems rather harsh.

Is that assuming some graduates?

27th is a harsh ranking. Even with no good goalies or elite players, we have some very solid players getting ready to contribute. Whatevs

One of the problems I think is the Rangers only have 4 college prospects--4 CHL prospects and 3 European prospects (unless you want to count Pashnin--then you have 4 of them as well). Most teams have a lot more. Of those only Skjei and Nieves are really high draft picks and both of them need more development at their level--not ready really for the next level. Duclair and Buchnevich both have a lot of upside but they're both a ways away too. After that everyone is a ? mark. So there is definitely a lack of depth at the non-professional level.

At the Ahl/Nhl level there's Kreider and Miller.

At the Ahl level there's Kristo, Lindberg and Fast and Hrivik both of whom have had a hard time staying healthy--Yogan, Mashinter bottom line types maybe.

McIlrath and Allen on D--and that's about it.

Talbot doesn't count anymore. He's 26 years old.

Prospect wise the Rangers aren't that deep. OTOH we have a number of guys on our team who could be on that list--Stepan (23), Hagelin (25), McDonagh (24) Del Zotto (23) and Moore (23) with Kreider (22) on the verge and Miller (20) a little less so. In the next couple years Lindberg, Kristo, Fast, McIlrath should all join them. So there is a wave coming but behind that wave what appears to be a smaller wave. IMO Rangers should hold on to their higher draft picks the next couple years anyway.

Baseball America does a "Top 15 25-and-Under" for each team. I think that's a better way to look at young talent rather than limiting it strictly to guys meeting a rigid definition of "prospect."

McDonagh
Stepan
Hagelin
Del Zotto
Moore
Kreider
Miller
McIlrath
Kristo
Fast
Skjei
Lindberg
Buchnevich
Nieves
Hrivik

I think that group would compare quite favorably to many other teams.

I like that approach. Basically you need to develop not just a core but a young core within the core while at the same time having a developing core in the works. The Rangers developing core right now is a little weak. Not having a 1st or a 2nd last year hurts a bit. IMO they should hold on to their top picks for at least the next couple years--it would help as well if they can comb the colleges, Europe and CHL for more guys like Allen. The Rangers track record is not bad in this regard--it's how we picked up Girardi, Zuccarello and Talbot.

Don't get that ranking.

Our prospect team would smoke most of the teams in the league (don't bring up Traverse, we were missing everyone there).

I think in a year or two were trending towards that bottom third, barring a shift, due to the age of our prospects. But now? That's just not an accurate rating.

...and to think some fans have been calling for a "rebuild".

That said, any time you look at a team's prospect list, you have to look at the roster, too (especially with the new CBA limiting free agency). The Rangers are still a remarkably young team.

It's obviously hard to get scouting reports on the ECHL but I wonder how Noreau has been playing. I was high on him when he was drafted and I know he is raw but I hope he is improving.
