I would take Drouin but Mantha outplayed him in the World Juniors which is probably the fairest way to evaluate top prospects head-to-head. I wouldn't be shocked to see both of those players be PPG in the NHL.

It's easier to score in the WJC if you are individually talented because there's little chemistry between players, and defensemen make a lot of mistakes.

Players like Mantha, similar to in major juniors, will dominate smaller players. I watched Mantha every game of the WJC. Horribly inconsistent effort shift to shift. It drove Bob McKenzie and Ray Ferraro up a wall. These habits will get him killed at the NHL level, especially under the reign of Mike Babcock.

I agree that the WJC is great at measuring talents of individuals, but it's not good to compare players head to head. Players that are drafted high typically have skill sets that will translate better to the NHL, ie. Drouin. There's a reason Mantha fell to #20 even though he put up well over a PPG and is 6' 4". That usually screams top 5-10 pick.

I think it's pretty mind-blowing that Duclair was only a month or so behind eligibility for this draft. Imagine where he'd go in this draft with the season he's having.

The thing I love about the Duclair pick is that all the red flags that dropped him to the third round have vanished this season.

Bad attitude? Named an alternate captain.

Inconsistent? lol 82 points in 48 games, how's that for consistency.

Points dropping? 82 in 48.

One dimensional? Playing the penalty kill, getting to dirty areas, willing to fight for pucks, high battle level.

Can't create his own offense? Through predominantly his efforts, he powered Quebec to top 5 in the league. While missing Mikhail Grigorenko most of the year. Duclair has been involved in 42% of Quebec's goals. Insane.

If he can get to 200 pounds, which is absolutely possible, he'll be a beast.

Scouting so far have hit a home run with this pick. I have a lot of faith in Tony.

Tomorrow against Blainville-Boisbriand will be another good test for the Remparts, who've won 7 in a row and are shredding teams in their way.

Blainville is very stout defensively, 2nd lowest GA in the league. A win against them and a Halifax loss (though unlikely, they are playing the worst team in the league) puts Quebec in 2nd place in the Q.

The trend of Duclair scoring big against the best teams in the league is outstanding, hope he can continue it tomorrow. I'll definitely be tuning in.

Had he been born 3 weeks later, he'd have been a certain first round selection in 2014 unless his game just collapses the last 20 games. It's rare that someone who scores over 100 points in their pre-draft season doesn't go in the first round, and The Duke doesn't fit the mold of such a player.

If you score over 110-115 points while leading your team in scoring by a significant margin (showing that you aren't just feeding off of superior linemates) and you aren't tiny or injury-prone, it's next to impossible to last into the second round regardless of your all-around game because you have just so much offensive potential. That's about what The Duke is looking at.

How high in the 1st rd though?

Some scouts had him going top 10 after his rookie year.

Most had him as a definite first rounder.

If he were a 1st rounder this year, I'd say he's a top 10 talent, might just barely miss it because of the very quality crop of centers in this year's draft.

That's what I figured as well.

Give him time. He was 152 lbs when Quebec drafted him and he's now at 184 lbs two years later.

He needs another 10 to 15 lbs. From the sound of it, it's doable.
By the way, the highlights do not show it, but does he get his hands dirty in the corner, does he hit?

He presently leads all 2014 draftees in scoring, both overall and per game. And not by a little, but by a significant margin. He's a little smaller than other top draftees, but Reinhart, Draisaitl, Bennett are only 6-0 to 6-1, so it's not as if there's a bunch of monsters there.

Certainly he shouldn't go below Nikolaj Ehlers, William Nylander and Julius Honka who are projected to go around the middle of the first rounder and are about the same size as The Duke, while producing a LOT less offensively.

He's on pace for 116 points. With over 110 points in the pre-draft season, I'd say there's a good chance he'd be a top-10 pick, definitely in the lottery (top-14).

Music to my ears.
It will be interesting where he plays next season.

Depends on your expectations. He had a pretty weak season last year.

Regardless it's not a stretch to say he is having a very good year.

Mildly surprised at the enmity in your posts. Let me guess, he wasn't a favorite of yours?

Absolutely agree he's having a great season compared to last year. But thats not the same as saying he's having a great year. Tony Duclair is having a 'great year'. I don't want to cheapen Tony's game, get me ? ;)

Funny you should mention McD, because he is not having a dissimilar season to McD's sophomore year. They have similar skill sets and play similar roles with similar results. To this point, anyway.

True there too, but can't you say that about 75 Dmen in College hockey the last 10 years ? :p:

Allen has already played in the NHL and looked promising. If I'm making a deal with the Rangers and part of it is either Skjei or Allen to me, I take Allen because he's way more likely to play in the NHL, anybody would have to say. Remember, the Rangers took Skjei because they felt one day he's play in the N.

Other reason Allen currently has higher value is Skjei looks to 3 years away, minimum. Allen looks like he's just about there now.

You have to prefer somebody who has already shown something.

Allen's cup of coffee is nice but no GM is basing a players worth on just making it to the NHL, and at an older age.

What a great season for the kid. Compared to last year, he has 30 more points in 7 fewer games. Crazy.

Gotta love it. But now the expectations are gonna shoot through the garden roof ! ;)

Three primary assists two secondary.

Primary assist is like a crisp $100 bill fresh out of the mint. A secondary assist is like a wrinkled old $100 bill from 1979. Either way you have a $100 bill.

At least that's what the fortune cookie just told me :propeller

So what's the story with Calle Andersson? I don't know a damn thing about him.

Is he a legitimate prospect? Does he have no NHL future? Posters on this board seem to be really split on his future.

It would be great if he could pan out to be a great PPQB, though.

now the expectations are gonna shoot through the garden roof.

As they should.

Performance effects expectations. MSC not sticking in the AHL made him drop in our eyes. Yogan not taking a step forward did the same. But when someone is playing well (Duclair, Kreider, Allen), we raise expectations.

In terms of points, yes (don't even need Halifax to lose actually), but division leaders get the first three spots.

No 1st or 2nd round picks, but it looks like the drafting was good enough to get us a 1st and a 2nd quality player in the 3rd round.

Nabbed two first round talents in the 3rd round, IMO. Certainly had their warts and suffered a justifiable slide, but they're both doing very well for themselves.

Jury is still out on Tambellini

If The Duke keeps up this pace and scores 110-120 points, that is certainly first rid quality. If Buch can stay on the top-6 in the KHL, he's certainly a first or second round quality prospect.

it will not matter if Buchnevich does not come to North America.... imagine if he decided to stay in the KHL for the rest of his career.
