I feel like we've had this debate a million times.

My personally opinion is based on value, on what you can find via trade/FA every year vs what you cannot. It's not that hard to acquire one dimensional skill. Semin, PAP, Moulson, etc. What never, ever, hits the market until it is too broken down to e valuable are the Backes, Kesler types. Give me a player that has a 2-5% chance to be that every day over a 10% chance to be Briere.

Pretty much this post.

One dimensional tweener skill isn't that hard to find.

Nobody here is saying to use 1st rounders on future Dorsetts.

Oh but they do. When people want to draft a big, tough forward at #20, they invasive that they will get Lindros or at least Eric Staal, but they will be lucky if he turns into a Dorsett.

Nicholls has 16 points in 34 ECHL games. Jean has 0 in 7. They both suck. Jean sucks worse, as he's in his second professional season.

Huh? That's not always the case and is often the case with any player taken at 20. We all thought the Rangers had drafted a premier puck mover in DZ. Wrong.

It's a moot point anyways because no one is saying to take a player with little offensive upside in the 1st round. We are all speaking of later rounds. Hey, if you want to gamble of 10 St Croix's, be my guest.

I don't so much care about the player having a ton of skill, they just need to be able to skate well and stir the pot. They need a player like Foligno in Buffalo or Shaw in Chicago. Someone who can keep up with the play and be a pain in the ass.

I understand they won't be Getzlaf, but can they be Dorsett? Neil?

I agree. I'm hoping they grab one in the 1st or 2nd round, although it does seem like they are being overvalued around the league come draft time, no?

Offensive dmen overrated? Yeah I guess a lil bit, but its cyclical. And the teams that drafted Karlsson at #13, Ceci at #15, Maata at #22, Matheson at #23, Schmaltz at #25, Pokka at #34, Clendening at #36 in recent drafts certainly might not think puck moving dmen are being overvalued.

Eh not that controversial since he's playing well in the AHL and didn't look out of place in a couple of NHL games. .

Yeah but supposedly Skjei is having a 'great' season according to more than a few posters here.

rangers need to draft fast tenacious players. thats what wins nowadays. guys who can get in on the forecheck hard and push back defenses with their speed.

bigger is better obviously, but speed kills...we could use more of it.

Agreed. Tenacious=winner. Just draft winners, guys who play at a high level and have that kind of compete. Brandon Saad is a great example. Chicago has had this kind of mentality for a few drafts now, check out their list of prospects, not drafting in the top 17 for awhile either.

Depends on your expectations. He had a pretty weak season last year.

Regardless it's not a stretch to say he is having a very good year.

Mildly surprised at the enmity in your posts. Let me guess, he wasn't a favorite of yours?

Skjei was a late round pick that didn't have any high level experience before being drafted and had a mediocre first year in college, and is now one of his teams top defensemen and represented the US in the WJC and drew praise for his play. That doesn't make him an amazing blue chip prospect but I don't really see how it's not him personally having a great season for himself.

There can be some nuance in these statements and I don't see the point in nitpicking the meaning of "great" in its context. If you think he's still playing bad, then say so. If you think he's having a good year but think that "great" should only be reserved for describing the play of a dominating player and used in a specific context then realistically you're being hopelessly pendantic and obtuse.

If your opinion is that Skjei has the ability to become a 3/4 d-man with 40+ point upside, I think it's fair to say this year has been "great" so far in regards to him achieving that goal.

If you think he's going to be the next McD or Keith, then yeah it's not looking so great, but not sure why you thought that from the get go.

Funny you should mention McD, because he is not having a dissimilar season to McD's sophomore year. They have similar skill sets and play similar roles with similar results. To this point, anyway.

I take Semin over Backes/Kesler 11 out of 10 times. Semin actually has a good defensive game despite his reputation and his offence blows the other two's out of the water.

Just saying.

Very true. However I don't think Skjei will develop that physical edge and snarl that McD has, which makes him an amazing 2 way defensemen.

I didn't really follow McD's development but IIRC even that element of his game came a bit out of nowhere, so fingers are crossed.

Maybe Skjei can go the other way though and develop his offense a bit further, would be great to a have a Brett Hedican-esque player.

Are you saying that Allen is worth more right now than Skjei?

That's a very controversial statement around these parts ;)

Allen has already played in the NHL and looked promising. If I'm making a deal with the Rangers and part of it is either Skjei or Allen to me, I take Allen because he's way more likely to play in the NHL, anybody would have to say. Remember, the Rangers took Skjei because they felt one day he's play in the N.

Other reason Allen currently has higher value is Skjei looks to 3 years away, minimum. Allen looks like he's just about there now.

You have to prefer somebody who has already shown something.

Bjugstad went 19th.

Here's the thing about bpa that ties into what I was trying to say about Allen vs Skjei: Rangers took Skjei based on bpa, then got Allen as ufa. Every season now really nice ufas from college appear virtually out of the firmament. Look at DeKuyser, Justin Schultz. Would anybody trade Skjei for either of those guys? I know I would.

Point is, bpa s one thing but when there's another route to get pmd that are more 'highly likely' to play for you one day, don't waste high picks on pmd who aren't very high to high upside pp anchors.

and then there's guys like Mike Mottau or Thomas Polk that never do anything.

You could make the same argument about never draft an offensive forward cuz you can sign free agents like Matt Read!

It's not always exactly easy to tell that the college UFA's will be great, or that you'll for sure be able to sign them (plus with Justin Schultz, he was drafted and took a weird loophole out)

Okay, fair points...then how about this...of the top 100 d men how many were 1st?

Same for top 100 forwards?

I know that's an onerous ask so may as well just call that question rhetorical. But, if I were in the Rangers' personnel set up, I'd set an intern loose on that question. My hunch is, the answer supports the proposition that using a 1st on a d man who isn't a bona fide pp operating prospect is wrong.

Another reason not to take a pmd in the 1st is, there are only 6 d men spots and 12 fwds...so you have 2x the chance that a fwd plays for you someday.

That's funny cause in my mind Semin can't hold either Backes or Kesler's jock. Funny how we always disagree.

Duclair lighting it up tonight, again. This time against Halifax. 1g 4a and they're halfway through the third.

I understand that the Rangers developing offensive talent has been one disappointment after another, but it's really hard to not be excited about Anthony Duclair.

1 goal and 5 assists against the 2nd best team in the Q. Jesus christ.

Still 8 minutes left in the third! He now has 43 goals and 81pts.

What a great year for all our draft picks this year.

Graves is a 1st pair defenseman on his team, coming away from a lot of his games a + player.

Duclair is simply destroying the Q.

Buchnevich is getting top 6 minutes in the 2nd hardest league in the world.

Skapski is one of the only reasons his team is competitve, I'd be shocked if he didn't get a contract after this year.

And Tambellini is.......meh.

Still, very impressive nonetheless.

To think, not only did they get him in the third round, but he was the third of their three picks in that round. And they took Tambellini before both him AND Buchnevich. Adam's got some catching up to do...

They did just what they needed to in the 3rd round with those last 2 picks. Boom or bust. Both are looking very good right now, hopefully they can keep progressing. Extremely excited.
