Don't like the move. He's still a twig and has a lot of physical maturing to do. The Dub is a great league, but I'd significantly rather he stayed at UND. That being said, I'm not Adam so I trust he made the right decision for himself.

any chance the Rangers had any say in this?? reason im asking is what if Adam got traded to a team in the WHL that ruined his development from before the trade??

North Dakota is having a bad season in a mediocre conference. Is there some dysfunction there?

ND lost 3 of their top 4 forwards and 2 of their top Dmen from last season, definite rebuild year, thats why we were saying last June that one of his positives was going to ND and being able to earn his ice time.

Ugh, that pick is turning from bad to worse. A guy like Tambellini would've developed best in the NCAA. Not a fan of him going to the WHL and be an overager.

@UNDMHockey: Hakstol at weekly press conference on Tambellini's departure: "This is not an easy place to play at, or be successful, nor should it be."

@UNDMHockey: Captain Dillon Simpson on Tambellini: "That's his decision. Our locker room won't worry about it; we have big games this week against CC."

Via Twitter.

I definitely agree the most disappointing part was that Tambellini really stood to benefit from the physical development that comes from the NCAA route.

You can't predict these things. Fogarty could have played for Edmonton in the WHL but he has spent the last 2 years at Notre Dame. Whether its on him for not developing or on Jackson for not giving Fogarty the minutes,Fogarty went the college route and he hasn't done anything. Fogarty will stay in school until he graduates. He will use his degree to get a job. JT Miller wanted to play in the NHL. Even before he was drafted,Miller talked about playing in the NHL. He viewed college hockey as a stepping stone to the NHL. Maybe Tambellini cares about playing in the NHL or pro hockey more than getting a college degree and playing it safe. He saw the minutes weren't there for him and left. College isn't for everyone. Jeremy Roenick went to BC for a week before he called his agent between classes and told him to get me out of here. He signed with the Hawks and was assigned to the QMJHL.

Brady Skjei (NYR) — As Team USA’s primary shutdown defenseman, Skjei did not disappoint. He played big minutes and made a good duo with Carrick against opponent’s top lines. There were a few miscues here and there, but those are to be expected when a player is used the way Skjei was. The majority of his tournament was very good as he did a nice job sealing off the net front, being physical deep in the zone and using his high end skating to his advantage. Skjei made a few plays in the tournament that really impressed me in USA’s transition game. He relies on his feet to get him out of trouble in the D zone and does it so well that he gives himself the time to make the right play with a pass up ice after clearing the way. Skjei was also physical and was able to be physical without taking a single penalty in the tournament. That’s pretty impressive for the competition he was taking on. I think Skjei still has some development ahead, but he played the way you’d expect a top-pairing guy to play. He didn’t really hurt Team USA and he made things tougher on the opposing forwards. 5 GP, 0-1–1, 4 PIM, +5

The scary part is that they took him before Buch and Duclair.

Tambellini was my least favorite of the three prospects based on information available about them in the summer (it crossed my mind and it was discussed by many in draft threads that Tambellini was drafted by Sather so high as a favor to his old Oilers' buddies). Plus also keep in mind that all three were deemed to be in a high bang / bust category. Too early to make such determination but this is minor bad news (if you perceive it as such) compared to development of both Buch and Duke.

It could be a number of things including difficulty with classes.

Still, with how hard it is to cut it in the NHL I wouldn't say no to 4 good years of hockey, and a free degree. Even a player as decorated in the NCAA as Hagelin wanted a contingency plan.

Yeah, unless I was extremely talented the way Brian Leetch was, I would always pick a school like Harvard or Yale. It doesn't set you back in terms of hockey in any significant way, but it gives you Ivy League education where if you fail to make the NHL, your career is still set.

Jim Cerny ‏@JimCerny 45s
RT @cwede: @JimCerny @JRNYR and Adam Tambellini went 1-3-4 in first Major Junior game, 4 Calgary, 1 day after withdrawing from North Dakota

Good start at least

Great year for 3rd round pick RT @JRNYR: Rangers prospect Anthony Duclair tallies goals 34 and 35 and adds an asst in Quebec win. #NYR
Go Tony Go!

Tambo with as many points in his first game in the dub than he had all year with ND.. not really happy with the decision, but at least he's starting off well.

I wouldnt worry too much guys, the hitmen and kelly kisio have a long history of developing good hockey players. Listened to the game on the radio, he was playing alot with his good friend greg chase on the top line, and wow 4 points in his first game is pretty dam impressive.

Never liked the Tambellini pick and definitely doesn't tickle my fancy that he left UND, however I am impressed with his play in his first WHL stint. Keep it up I guess.

It led to him being drafted 65th overall by the Rangers last June. But his initial path of going to UND didn’t work out. As a freshman there, he had just two goals and two assists in 16 games. He inferred he wasn’t getting enough ice time and needed to make a change.

“It was more of a hockey decision for myself,” Tambellini explained. “Me and my family sat down and we really looked at the situation there. I’m looking to play a lot of games and play a lot of minutes. My choice to come to Calgary was pretty simple after finding that out.”

Tambellini wanted to play for Calgary. Portland got a #1 pick. Portland needed the pick after they were punished by the WHL/CHL last season. Portland were stripped of the first rounders from 2014-2017. They traded 3 2nd picks for Dumba.

Tambellini, a third-round draft pick of the New York Rangers, had a steep learning curve as a 6-foot-3, 167-pound forward, scoring two goals and four points in his first 16 college games. But he was expected to develop into a dynamic scoring threat later into his career.

A source told the Herald that Tambellini felt the WHL was best for his development.

Tambellini had a nice debut for Calgary.

Tambellini isn't one of Sather's Edmonton buddies. Adam Tambellini was taken where he was projected to go.

There are a couple concerns with the decision Tambellini made, but none of them have to do with the quality of the Calgary organization. If he's going to head to the CHL, Calgary is as good of a place as any for him.

The first concern is really broken into two parts: first, he was struggling to earn more ice time while on a mediocre UND squad, and second, that he chose to "run" from the challenge. It's important to note that the second part of that problem is just speculation, as we don't have any official explanation as to why he chose to leave the program. Regardless, there's some degree of concern that he wasn't able to better establish himself at the ND program.

The second concern has more to do with physical development. The kid is an absolute stick, and really needs to pack on some muscle. I consider the NCAA to be a better choice when it comes to physical development, as players have more time in the weight room and are forced to muscle up to compete against older and more mature competition. He'll certainly grow physically over the next two years in the Dub, but it's hard to imagine he'll grow as much. He's supposed to turn into a power forward, and plays right now at about 170? Not going to get anywhere in the pro game at that size.

Anyway, Calgary is a great organization. You gotta think with the recent moves that they're the odds-on favorite to win they're conference, and possibly the Cup. Hopefully it works out for the best.

There are 26 regular season games left, so he should end the season with 66 GP.

That's a projection of 58 goals and 46 assists in 66 games.

Thanks I was in fact asking so I can make a projection. BTW, how good is that considered for his league? Someone said it makes him a great prospect but he made it sound like those numbers aren't elite.

They're great numbers in the Q these days. 100 points players are more uncommon than 10-15 years ago, especially at 18. Only 4 did it last season, 2 did it in 2011-12 and 3 in 2010-11. Of those 9 players, 6 were overagers, 1 was 19, 1 was named Drouin (17 yo) and 1 was named Huberdeau (18 yo)

As an example, Mantha had 50 goals and 39 assists in 67 games last year at the same age.

In 10 years, only 5 players have scored 58 goals or more. 3 were overagers, 1 was named Radulov (19 yo) and 1 was named Crosby (17 yo).
