Don't get me wrong, i like Coyle but now you have five shooter on the same powerplay, i don't get it. What Granlund have to do, to get a spot on the first line or on the first poweplay?

Koivu isn't a shooter. Not even a little bit actually.

‘Not going to change’

Koivu has one goal this season on 30 shots. In comparison, Parise is second in the NHL with 66 shots.

“You always want to score more and you want to produce offensively like any player,” Koivu said. “Obviously there’s ups and downs, but yeah, it’s my job to produce offensively and I haven’t been able to do that as much as I wanted. But at the same time, there’s a lot of good in my game, too.

“I’m not going to change what I do. I believe it’s been working. I’m sure it’s going to work in the future as well.”

Can we please have a good, open, non-violent conversation about this quote? Maybe I'm in the minority, or maybe the quote is taken out of context, but am I the only one that finds this quote to be inappropriate for any player to be making in this situation. This is not my usual "I hate Koivu" spiel (which I still do). Realistically, look at the way Koivu and the team has been playing and then to righteously proclaim that you will not change how you're playing in order to possibly improve the team??? wah...:help:

Yeah, not only is Koivu not a shooter, Parise never leaves the area behind the net. Both he and Koivu play on the right side of the ice and they always seem to get bottled up.

IMO:

Pominville - Granlund - Parise - Spurgeon - Suter
Coyle - Koivu - Nino - Brodin - Dumba

You want Granlund, the most creative player and the best passer on the team, on the #1 PP, especially now that he's clicking with Poms. Parise is going to have to go IN FRONT OF the net, not behind. Spurgeon and Suter are the point shooters.

Second line, same idea, with Koivu working the puck from the half wall and the two wingers as shooters. Brodin and Dumba at the points.

While I'm really sick of everyone blaming Koivu, I do agree with you this time. He should shoot more and work on his shot (I think he worked on it in the off season a bit?). Otherwise, Koivu has been solid this season, IMO.

I think Koivu has a decent shot already, it's just that he rarely uses it and when he does, he misses the net. It's a psychological thing maybe.

That's an annoying quote for sure. Great players will note deficiencies in their game and work to correct them. They talk about this all the time in basketball and a lot with Crosby. He worked on his faceoffs and shooting all the time. Koivu's been giving the same "I focus on defense" answer regardless of the coach or how the team's doing. He's also extremely defensive whenever he or the team struggles. Frustrating.

think he's simply saying he's not going to cheat defensively and that his game and that line has created chances and dominated possession, which (cover your ears, stats haters) over the course of a season leads to points. I think this quote is being sensationalized.
It certainly appears he should shoot more. But then again it's also apparent fans miss the bus all the time in their decisions on when a player should shoot, hold, or pass, and players have to play to their strengths. Koivu is patient, Parise is anything but, so maybe they aren't all that great a tandem. But then I think I'd consider Coyle more like Koivu than Parise so curious to see how that combo is going to work.

Didn't Koivu work on his shot this offseason? To me, that sounds like he's working to improve aspects game that have been criticized.

I think the his quote means he understands he'll never be an offensive dynamo. That's not the type of player he is, and I think Koivu's tired of people expecting him to produce huge numbers. He's a defensive center.

If he's not an offensive dynamo, then he should be off the first line and on something like the 3rd line. He's hindering that line if he's not going to pick up his offense.

Which is what will happen eventually.

This is the first year he'll probably be challenged for the 1st line center position. You can't fault Koivu for being this team's best offensive option for the last however many years he's been our 1st line center.

Does anyone think Coyle is an offensive minded forward? If so, why?

Good point. Hit the nail on the head. When there's a better option/Granlund/Coyle/Whoever is ready, they'll take over 1st line duties. Until then...

I don't see Koivu throwing a hissy fit if there's someone who will produce more. Koivu would still get his minutes, and it wouldn't always be against the top competition. Above all, he wants to win.

I remember something like this too. Didn't someone post about him working on his shot with Vladimir Jurzinov? I remember reading something like Jurzinov thinks Koivu can be a 40 goal scorer or something like that?

Koivu has 22 goals in a season for his career best...22. Not exactly a 40 goal sniper.

Especially considering he is 30 years old now, just in his prime. He may not be a goal scorer, but he should being putting up goals even as a defensive center with the salary that he gets.

I'm a Koivu fan, he needs to start scoring goals.

Yeah, same here. I'm a fan of Koivu as well, but he's unwillingness to shoot is frustrating at times.

He should be able to score around 25 goals + 40 assists per year.
