Probably the toughest player in the entire organization and he is a lefty which always throw people off. People stopped fighting him at 18.

He is a hard worker and his offense took off this year as he was a solid PKer and top-4 d-man on a playoff team that went pretty deep.

He is an intimidating force.

Makes me question why McIlrath was picked so high when you can McIlrath-lite players in round 5 in draft. Not hating on McI, just question the pick still.

That has always been one of my points about that pick.

The hope is MCI is at the top of that class of player.

Your chance of getting any kind of NHL player in the fifth round is, literally, about 2%.

What separates "McIlrath-lite" players from the actual McIlrath players is usually skating ability. And the difference between the genuine article and the lite version is usually significant enough to drop a guy to round five.

Huh? Ryan Callahan was taken in the 4th round. Makes me wonder why anyone would take a speedy, feisty goal scorer earlier than the 4th round.

You can do that with every pick. Noreau is not close, potential-wise, to McIlrath.

Thanks for the reply, I was looking as to what seperates Noreau and McIlrath. Description wise, they sound pretty identical. In fact, when I was skimming the thread, I though McIlrath was being described in your previous post I quoted!

Ah, well then my mistake.

McIlrath is a superior skater by FAR as compared to Noreau. Noreau was better positionally a couple of years ago because due to his lack of footspeed, he has always had to play the game like that to even see the ice. McIlrath has the opposite problem. His skating is fine and it allows him to step up and deliver big hits. With that, comes some positioning issues early in his career. However, it is easier to correct those bad pinches when you can skate very well as opposed to getting Noreau to skate better.

I hope that made sense. As I was typing it I felt like I went in a bit of a circle.

Unless there's been some significant improvement in his condition I doubt very much that Sauer is going to get a contract. It's too bad--he was turning out nicely.

The Rangers will probably keep a couple spots anyway open for UFA's. Richards gets bought out. If I were to guess maybe only one of Mashinter, Ferriero and Palmieri come back. Segal has over 100 NHL games. He had a good season for the AHL anyway. He's not going to sign an AHL contract and I doubt Vernace or Pyett will either. Our AHL team has very little experience returning on defense. We'll have to sign I would think at least two guys to 2 way contracts. I'd be fine with both Vernace and Pyett but not Collins though Gernander seemed to like him--maybe we should get rid of Gernander.

The New York Rangers have opted not to sign Saskatoon Blades centre Shane McColgan to an entry-level contract.

McColgan’s agent Pat Brisson confirmed the news in an e-mail Friday afternoon.

NHL teams have until 10 p.m. local time Friday to sign their 2011-drafted players in order to retain their rights.

McColgan, a Rangers fifth-round pick (134th overall), is now eligible for the 2013 draft, which takes place June 30 in Newark, N.J.

The 20-year-old becomes an unrestricted free agent if he is not selected in the draft.

McColgan is eligible to sign an AHL deal if he doesn't get drafted or doesn't sign a NHL deal as a free agent.

And this is what I was talking about. He plays good positional defense, but his feet are slow. He is a big kid, so that is to be expected. I think he has a bright future with this organization.

This was very apparent at Traverse City. I thought Noreau looked great for what he was projected. Good positioning, hard low shot, understands the game. His skating was on the slow side but can certainly improve.

McIlrath needed to work on his game but his skating was excellent. Good even for a smaller player. McI can be an important top 4 defenseman. Noreau, 3rd pair.

Exactly. McIlrath is very raw, but the tools are there for him to be something special in this new NHL.

Thanks for the info.

I admit I don't know much about the AHLers you mentioned, so I'll defer to others on here.

Sauer I would not offer a contract; too risky. Maybe if he proves he is healthy, you can get him for a lower cap number, though I doubt he plays again. Clowe would be the only one of the UFA's I'd even CONSIDER re-signing; only if price is right. Mashinter and Palmieri both have the size you like, but I haven't seen enough of them to judge whether they are worth trying to bring back.

Well, if Noreau can be what Regher is now (a nasty 4/5 D), I'll be pretty stoked. Turning out to be another great D pickup.
 
Honestly, I see Noreau as a John Erskine player. Maybe with a bit better offense/instincts. So a solid 5/6 guy who is a hard nosed MFer, won't take ****, and will protect his teammates.
 
Great to hear that Noreau is in the fold. McColgan will most likely get drafted by someone. I don't think he'll leave Newark being a Free Agent. If he does though, get him to Hartford on an AHL deal or down with Greenville. Might as well try.

Plus, not a single person ever expected Noreau to improve like this. I love the kid and I never thought he'd improve as he has so far. He's exponentially better than when he was drafted. Light years.
