Yep, I was a little afraid they were going to let him go. Seemed incredibly stupid for a big, tough, SOB who can keep the game simple.

I'd say he's similar to Sauer. Worse defensively, but A LOT meaner. If Noreau and McIlrath both pan out, the Rangers are going to be a mean team on the backend.

Does it make sense to try Noreau as a forward? Don't really want your D in the box for five-minutes 20 times a year

Erskine like. He keeps the game VERY simple and is good positionally. Good stick. Not overly mobile but he stays in the lanes and pushes guys outside.

Probably the toughest player in the entire organization and he is a lefty which always throw people off. People stopped fighting him at 18.

He is a hard worker and his offense took off this year as he was a solid PKer and top-4 d-man on a playoff team that went pretty deep.

He is an intimidating force.

(I have seen a couple of games of his, it's a small sample)

He's bigger and a lot tougher but not close skill wise. He is going to need a lot of work to be a 5-6 defenseman in the NHL.

For a 5th round pick I am not sure what else we can expect but if he develops he is going to be one of those players the opposition hates playing against.

Edit: Boyler said it better than I . He improved a ton his last few years of JR's.

Yep. Just further evidence. He has a presence on the ice, without a doubt.

The bonus of Noureau, provided McIlrath starts the season in the AHL, is he will take a lot of pressure off as far as being the tough guy of the team.

I'm friends with sam and his family, you guys couldn't have drafted a beetter kid.. While hes known for his toughness don't be surprised if his overall game comes around, the kid works harder than anyone I know. He's ALWAYS working on his shot in his driveway. He's also closer to 6'6 and 220.. Last time I saw him he looked like a beast.

Sauer had way more smarts, could play a two way game very well at that age, skating was alot better too. Noreau defensively reminds me of a Marc Methot. Stay at home with the occassional hard pass shot that can garner some points on the board.

I just watched a bunch of his fights.

He throws some good punches, but he takes a ton too. His size is going to help him a ton, because he doesn't seem like the most strategic fighter. He always only fights with his left hand in the videos I saw. McIlrath's ability to throw both hands equally adept is what's going to make him a dominant fighter in the NHL.

Do you really think he has that high of a ceiling? I don't see it.

I think if they can get a Engelland, Erskine-type he would have hit his peak.

He's young enough and has progressed enough since his draft that I'm leaning more to his high point than the low. I'm trying to have an open mind, these guys are young, the bigger they are the longer it takes most of the time. Engelland and Erskine kind of bounds him to a stereotype that once he achieves we think anything more is an over achievement. Why ? If he keeps progressing, albeit slowly, who cares where he was picked and what the usual expectations are for a late round pick. Just go go go go go, ever forward !

And btw, of note, Eng and Ersk were both around 28 when they became full time NHL'ers.

They have 39 players under signed contract for next season. Nine RFAs--Zuccarello, McDonagh, Hagelin, Stepan, Sauer, Mashinter, Ferriero, Palmieri and Niemi. The first four are locks to be back. Sauer, I don't know what they do with him. Mashinter and Ferriero may be back. Palmieri? Niemi already left for Finland. So from those nine, you probably end up bringing back six or seven.

Clowe, Hamrlik, Eminger and Gilroy are UFAs. Maybe one or two of them are back. Of the non-roster guys, I count four UFA--Sean Collins, Logan Pyett, Brandon Segal, Mike Vernace. I doubt Sean Collins is back in any capacity. Can you get Pyett, Vernace and Segal on AHL deals? They may be able to land an NHL deal somewhere.

We'll have a couple of openings.
