OT: 2012-13 Lockout Discussion Part X: Is There Any Hope? Edition

It was almost the exact opposite situation in those years. Stars going from good/great teams to the terrible Rangers.

Look, I wish we could keep both, but its quite clear the Rangers organization has already made the decision of who they value more.

I agree, I just think it's not going to solve anything. If the season starts, we'll have the same team as last year with less depth, and a power forward superstar instead of a sniper.

I was all for the Nash trade. However, I think this lockout has significantly dampened how good it is/was for the Rangers.

This lockout is the worst possible thing that could've happened to this team at the moment. It's all a crock of ****.

Gaborik is going to be 32 when his contract expires.

Are you interested in giving him another 5/35 or so?

I think you could get him done at 5/30 although with his injury history I am not sure about giving him that. I could be wrong but I think the annual salaries of top players will come down with the new CBA. If not, teams will have to decide whether to go with the "stars and scrubs" and or have a more balanced but less star laden team.Teams that can develop young talent and open cap space will be the winners.

If we can sign him to 35/7 or 30/6 I'd be very happy.

This thread sounds like a "Should we keep Gabby or not?" Thread and not a lockout thread.

Nothing is even close to finalized as far as this goes. The PA will push back... Guaranteed.

This is an ego war at this point.

The loser is the one at the end who 'accepts' the previous offer given without pushing back.

This latest offer by the NHL is a step in the right direction, and the players could easily accept it and start the season. When Fehr pushes back, the NHL will get *****y again and back off from negotiations.

It has to get to a point where both sides feel they aren't 'losing' anything and once both can agree they've made an even amount of concessions, there will be a deal.

Hey everyone!...Been reading these boards for quite a while now so I decided to sign up...Love coming on here and reading what all of you have to say...As for the lockout, I think this is finally the end...Can't see them losing yet another season

Welcome. Feel free to chime in about how we should trade Gabby for a 4th at this point because "THE CAP IS FALLING!!! THE CAP IS FALLING!!!"

:-)

As CCP may have realized today, I'm not too into this whole business stuff. So someone explain to me how the cap could drop to 60 if more than half the league is over 60, and with the current contracts, every team would have to end up right at 60?

I have no idea how any of it works but wouldn't the 1 amisty (sp?) buyout per team come into play for that?

It is spelled amnesty, officially a compliance buyout and it would come into play. In addition, if I understand it correctly, if there is a season this year the cap would be 70 but teams have to be at 60 by next year. So free agents at the end of this year wouldn't get resigned and that would bring the cap down. That is why all the discussion of trading gab has come into the thread. Trade him in a salary dump and we could still sign our young guys and be closer to the cap.

Personally, I agree with others that 60 is too low and I don't think the pa will like it. But it is a starting point.......in December:shakehead

To all the PRO NHL crowd - keep this equation in mind

Let us say that there are 690 players (23 per team) in total in the league as a whole
For next year (2013/2014) there are 411 players currently with signed contracts for that season and eventually onward
Their contracted amounts are as of today = $1,319,208,170
6 more players are not signed for 2013 (assuming season starts) as they are RFAs. For simplicities sake let us say these 6 players sign at a caphit of $3M per head = $18M more
Total amount signed is then $1,337,208,170 for 417 contracted players
Average amount per player is then $3,206,734
There are however then 273 players without contracts that need to sign next year.
Let us for simplicities sake say that retirements and signings elsewhere match up with callups and new ELCs

Since there are 109 RFAs to sign (one way or the other), then the rest will either be new UFAs or new contracts
With a $60M cap maximum per team in 2013/2014 - the total theoretical possible amount of cap space to spend is $1,8B - if all teams were to spend at the MAX. Which they of course will not
Let us say that they do that - just to illustrate something.
What is left to spend on the remaining 273 empty roster spaces would then in theory be $480,791,830 - or $1,761,142 per players contract
Which hardly seems doable.
Let us say the RFAs (109) were to get an average of $1,3 M per contract (I know this is very low) then they would be taking $141,700,000 of this cake.
Left for the remaining resignings (164), ie UFAs, callups and ELCs would then (in theory) be around $339,091,830 or $1,284,439 per player
But since the teams - at the most - will only spend maybe half of this amount - well then this number will be halved. Meaning a bit over $620,000 per contract
See the problem??
BUYOUTS of 1 player per team will not solve this quite significant problem that I have not seen brought up anywhere. NO WAY! The numbers are far too big.
Since about 40% of the leagues contracts are not signed (OK there are some players that will be promoted with ELCs and contracts...) for next year - this is a HUGE ISSUE for the Union.
Think about it!!!

This is a mathematical impossibility that has been presented by the owners and they know it! It will also be impossible to manage around half the teams in the league to get contracts to fill out their squads, so stupid. Almost dumber than the presented 43% they came out with to begin with.
And here the NHL is - bringing this to the table and standing by it as a "final ultimatum" - just 3 days before 2013.
What an absolute FARCE !!!
Can you imagine the chaos?
I bet guys like Jacobs get wet at night thinking about this...

is the trading cap space on the table? I thought this was something that was added by brian burke earlier in these negotiations. Or were these just rumors? Thanks for the help

I feel like people are forgetting that the drop to $60m takes place for next season, not right away. The rangers are still in a tough situation, but it isn't as dire as is made out. They have $52m tied up in 16 players.

The NHL’s Canceler-in-Chief Gary Bettman, under pressure in the form of phone calls from big-market owners — including the Rangers’ James Dolan, multiple sources report — to resurrect bargaining the league abandoned three weeks ago, made modest adjustments to the previous offer regarding, most notably, contract term limits for free agents changing teams; salary variance within contracts; and amnesty buyouts.

A cap of $60 million next season would both put a squeeze on the approximately 250 players whose contracts are due to expire over the summer while minimizing their choices as unrestricted free agents.

The union is expected to propose a higher 2013-14 cap in the transition to 50/50, perhaps $65M, plus a cap on escrow losses.

Must have been reading my posts here on HFBoards the past 2 days...;)
$60M in cap roof next year will not work, even mathematically
$65 is about right
Would allow us to keep Ghidorah - sign our UFAs - and most importantly also provide possibilities for 10-12 other teams in a worse situation to even be able to ice an entire roster... Yikes
This $60M cap roof thing for next year is plainly Pejorative Slured by the NHL to even propose.
