You are both correct. You are arguing general process and
@OHL4Life is arguing that the process to date has pinpointed McGregor as the clear #1.
As an outsider, this is what I am hearing with this conversation.
@BobbyStokers9713 - Teams go through a process to decide who they select. The team that selects first has the full list of player options to select from so there are no impediments with respect to who they take. So, they need to run through their process and land on the player.
@OHL4Life - Teams have run thei process all year and had landed on five players to watch more closely going into the penultimate tournament. Now that tournament is over, one player has proven to have risen above the pack. Certain factors related to illness prevented him from rising above the pack early but now that the illness has cleared, the cream has risen and it is a no brainer who is #1.
Both have run a process. Will the Petes continue to run their process? Yes. Will they run through everything over and over another ten times between now and April 11? Yes. But, based on discussions amongst scouts, results of this tournament and results of the other parts of the year, it looks like McGregor is the decided #1 ranked player. The Petes may run their process and after doing so, they will land on that player.
But, this is no different than when Sidney Crosby was the #1 pick. Is it lazy for a franchise to name him that at Christmas? He was head and shoulders above everyone with ZERO doubt. But, yes, you do need to let the season play out. When the season ends, you do need to run your numbers and weigh options. Sure. But, when you know, you know. And as of right now, many in the OHL scouting circles now know. Further conversation will only confirm what they already know.
Certain teams may value different attributes and if they do then they already know as well. They just know it is a different player they value higher.
