Maybe for Canadian born prospects but I could see a high-end American say I only want to play for these teams and if another team drafts me then I will sign a tender with a USHL team and play there until I can play D-1

High-end American players will want to play in the CHL or NTDP. The USHL is no longer an attractive play for high-end talent. Do you really think kids are going to want to play their draft year in the USHL now when all the good kids their age are playing in the CHL?

I disagree, the alternatives to playing in the CHL are FAR less attractive now. If you're a top player, and every other top player in North America is playing in the CHL, you no longer have the "I'll just go to College" route, because your alternative is playing in the USHL. Trading defective players will no longer fetch you a third round pick, they'll fetch you ALOT more than that.

So trading a kid who doesn't want to report to your team but would report to another is almost even more enticing because you're receiving a compensitory first round pick and ALOT of value in return for that 1 player.

That’s not what I meant. A player can still choose where they want to play. A team can still pick those players and use the defect rule but the player still ends up where they want. So whether it is via manipulating the draft or forcing a defection trade, the result is the same. The players still dictate where they want to go.

Ok I agree with that, but when it comes to the draft, teams will be a lot less scared of drafting the player they want because the return in any trade will be appropriate.

Yes, the USHL will no longer attract the quantity of quality they once did, but they will still attract enough players to still be a viable place for prospects with college and pro aspirations to play.

So, a high end American, who refuses to report to North Bay will use the USHL as leverage to either get traded to a team of his choice or simply bide his time until he is NCAA eligible.

US Colleges/Universities(much like in Canada) require a student to have completed high school and generally be 17 years of age by the time school starts. That isn't a hard/fast rule but generally how it works. To play NCAA hockey you have to be a full time student (unless you are in your 5th year of university). Players who receive an offer from a school can commit officially to the school in advance of 2 full school years (but they can request a deferral of 1 year if they don't start by then.) So that means that a player who is 16 can commit to a school, but would need to start in 2 years at 18 or defer if they aren't ready yet. Add in to this that they need to qualify academically. This isn't football or basketball so likely no wink wink nudge nudge acceptances happening.

Teams who’ve traded defected 1st round picks have already fetched a lot more than a 3rd.

I don't disagree with you, all I'm saying is players have a lot less leverage now, especially if you're not a first round pick. The OHL knows their the league of preference now, a lot of teams will withhold trading player, especially after / if those players becomes NHL draft picks, their NHL teams will want them playing in the OHL if they aren't college ready instead of the USHL.

So players will inevitably still defect and ask for trades, it happens all the time, but it'll be a lot less frequent and teams will be a lot more willing to just hold onto those players unless they get great value back.

You do know 90% of NCAA players are age 21-26 don't you? Just like USports. You just don't walk into the NCAA at age 18 unless your name is Fantilli or Celebrini.

As it stands now, it really sounds like Warren and Murata are top 4 with zero doubt. There is talk about McGregor and Delisle in that top 5 as well as Wycisk. Is it looking like that is a consensus or is there still some disagreement in those five picks?

It also sounds like there is no clear cut #1 yet. None of the players are particularly big (yet). So there isn’t a monster factor like last year.

It really does look like a situation where teams will have a preference and they will pick along those lines.
