I think the nature of entertainment has changed a lot.

Be it sports, or movies, or music, people don’t really seem to go “all-in” like they used to.

I think there are many complex reasons for that, but I don’t think the NHL has necessarily done itself any favors.

I think players are more skilled than ever and the average NHL player would skate circles around the their 1980s counterpart. But there’s a certain something missing — a certain passion, or emotion.
My theory: one of the biggest reasons why rivalries are neutered nowadays is the massive amount of player movement, including between rivals. How the hell am I supposed to hate the Devils when Brian Boyle is playing there, or when half their roster and half our roster were on different teams just two years ago? It was very different back in the 90s when the Devils had Brodeur, Stevens, Daneyko, Niedermayer, etc., the Flyers had Lindros, LeClair, BrindAmour, Desjardins, etc., the Pens had Jagr, Mario, Francis, Barrasso, etc.
