I think this was an ideal outcome for this game. Team showed itself it can play with one of the best teams in the league right now and showed progress in so many different facets of the game. The fact that we lost with several chances to tie late in the game will keep them focused on improving with a clear sense of what needs to improve.
Spot on

Difference being, imo they are firing on all cylinders. We’re not.

I innately know they’re beatable.

Very good effort considering they were also playing against the crowd and the refs. Why even have rules if you aren't going to enforce them?

Team is either winning games or hanging in there with half of their top 6 producing like fourth liners. If these guys ever come around we're going to be a wrecking ball

Just watched 3rd after falling asleep last night...very proud of effort...playoff type hockey...tight,patient and a great learning experience. K'Andre was feeling it last night and is gaining confidence...Filip looks like a heat seeking missile...GG knows how to build up a players confidence. 8 players under 25 with major roles....did someone say rebuild?

Cant complain. We werent going to go 76-3-3. Thats a top team in the league no doubt about it, and they are very much a contender. The fact that we were right there with them was positive

I was very happy with this effort overall but I must call out the bottom pair again. They are extraordinarily ineffective right now.

Nils is trying to get it. He doesn't, but he's trying. I see him improving in certain areas.

Nemeth is just a disaster, slow, hands of stone.

We had only 6 negative players in relCF and it was the 4th line (who were awful last night), the bottom pair, and Goodrow (albeit, Goodrow was only like -0.6 or something, so kinda negligible). Consider that, the entire team pushed the play with the screeching exception of the bottom 5.

Which brings me to another point that sometimes as much as I like that 4th line they see WAY too much ice time. They should've gotten 2-3 shifts at most that last period. They had their worst game of the year and Toronto ran all over them.

I was going to say it but I wanted to be spared the 'What do you expect from them, they've been good' posts.

Chytil line should have gotten way more time. I get rolling 4, but the 1st 2 periods the Chytil line should have been leaned on. Play what's working.

As soon as I saw Nemeth's doofy ass pinch I knew something bad was coming.

This was the closest to a playoff-style game we've seen from them under Gallant and I believe he was happy with that.

They played 5x better in this one than 4-5 of the wins they had this season
Agree...and I loved how Gauthier got into traffic...hope we see that escalate even more and he is getting the chances and they will go in soon enough . Sure it was a loss but they can feel a bit better about the team play overall . We will not win them all . Onward and upward to the next game .

Doesn't GG always roll 4 lines?

This just in from Mika:

We need to send this poor guy a few porterhouse, stat.

If Gallant wanted to send the message that he's rewarding effort and playing the way he wants them to play, then he should have sent Chytil's line out to start the 3rd and roll from there. Chytil did get a bit of a reward from Gallant when he put him on the ice in the final minute of the game, but Chytil was our best forward all night and should have gotten more time than he did.

Fil is a heat seeking missile with loose coordinates. He's like a windup toy you let loose, and he just goes. The kid runs around like a bull in a china shop, but still he's pretty transparent at what he seeks to do. Hopefully the coaches can refine him a be bit more shifty, more deceptive. He needs to incorporate that to grow his game at this stage.

I think it's good that they play the 4th line a lot because it's a good line, but only when it's tied or they're ahead. That said Hunt did score the only goal last night.

I'm not sure why they don't try Hunt on Mika's line instead of Goodrow. Hunt plays with the same, if not more, grit than him, and he forechecks like a demon. Mika and Kreider need someone who can get to the puck first and keep it until they make it into the o-zone. You also allow Kreider to move back to RW.

The 4th line got caved last night.

The top 2 lines graded out okay analytically but anyone who watched the game knows that they only had one line that was going (and they should have played more.)

Another rough night at the office for the bottom pair too which surprised me a bit because I thought they were pretty solid through 2.

That's a good comment. Chytil's an interesting one to watch. He's very impressive getting the puck into the zone. His elusive stickhandling skills serve him well there.

Once in the zone it's more difficult. I'd like to see that line work the cycle more.

Chytil's shown some great bursts of speed, his and Kakko's confidence is blooming. I'd love to see Chytil opposite CK to see what that looks like with both of their speed and size. He looks good with Gaut and CK is like a better version of him.

Difference last night was the first seeing-eye Tor goal. One mistake from Shesty (second goal going 5-hole), and one for Campbell (the ginormous bad angle backhand rebound Hunt scored on). I've noticed lots of fat rebounds this year off low backhand shots, goalies are so good at reading forehanders it's really not so crazy to throw more low backhanders at the pads if the offense is a little slow like it was last night.

Solid game from the guys overall, they really turned the pressure up later in the game and should have had at least a couple of PPs to show for it, shit happens though we'll get them next time at MSG.

Refs were definitely not our friends last night. I also felt that while I liked the effort and the patience from our team--we still needed to have less respect for a good opponent. It seemed like we were doing a lot of puck watching, except when the puck was on our sticks. So many pucks bounce on guys at the bluelines, to many fumbles and turnovers, and generally just not committing 100% to the play you're making whether it's pinching, checking a Leaf, or making/receiving a pass.

I didn't think they were lazy, just too focused on not giving things up to the Leafs. The Leafs are good enough and experienced enough at this point to take whatever you give them and turn it into something. So, it was a good game by us and a good effort--definitely winnable--but I think our inexperience showed and I think this team has another gear that's going to be mental, about them going into games not just with the belief that they can win, but that they should.

When a team like Toronto has the last change at home they will take advantage of 4th lines whenever the opportunity presents itself
Yeah but Toronto doesn't control GG starting them in the offensive zone like 10 times.

That line should never start there. They are not going to score.

The young guys were their best last night. Kakko looked good, the 3rd line was fantastic, and Miller was their best on defense. That is promising in the sense that they might be finally getting the style and system Gallant wants them to employ.

That is the continued growth that the team needs from those players. The effort put forth by those players is how this team grows from a playoff team to a contending team. People said Lafreniere was invisible last night, but that's not what I saw. He was good on the forecheck and had a strong game. That 3rd line gets rolling like this game after game and they'll be winning a bunch more than losing.

If this effort is put up against Buffalo on Sunday, it's an easy win.
