A loss...figures

We got issues with Smith again, what a failure. Can't believe this guy gets paid 4M a yr.

Regarding the 4th line last night and their ice time or lack thereof. Carp wrote, "Mid-third, Andersson-Chytil-Lettieri, with Brady Skjei and DeAngelo, got pinned in their own zone and Lundqvist saved their bacon. Normally, that threesome might find some pine seats immediately. David Quinn put them right back out for their next turn. So, yeah, he’s trying to win every game. But, yeah, he’s also teaching and trusting and letting them make errors, as long as they aren’t lacking effort. When the next shift brought a similar result, though, Quinn pulled the plug on that line."

When Marc Staal is far from your worst D, that’s a concern.

This team needs a better 3rd and/or 4th line, and make them a shutdown line. They spend too much time in their zone and a good shutdown line will keep things in the neutral zone or in the opponents zone.

It’s just getting ridiculous the amount of times they blow a lead and late in the 3rd.

Other confessions - something about Kevin Hayes makes me want to jab him in the forehead, I can’t wait until Marc Staal is off the team, I think David Quinn will not lead this team during its next window, I’m not as high on Hajek as some, I think the defense is one of the weakest in the NHL, I think the Rangers should’ve made sure the second pick from Tampa was a first if the team made the ECF and/or Miller and McD were resigned, and I believe in the lone gunman theory.

Regarding Hayes, I was hoping that I wasn't the only one. He's got the talent to be so much more then he shows on most nights. Just gotta do better on a more consistent basis.

Also, don't completely agree with you regarding the defense. The issue is that only 3 d-men can play the style that Quinn is trying to play. That is up tempo, active in the neutral zone and quick passes up the ice. Skjei, ADA and Pionk are built that way and are able to play that system. Smith has been on and off working in that system; he doesn't think the game quick enough so he ends up making mistakes like the 1st goal. Staal - never his game. Finally Shattenkirk just too slow both physically and mentally to succeed in this system.

The game has become so fast that a defensemen with great vision and quick decision making skills are at a premium. ADA in his own zone can make a pass facing the boards, behind the net through his legs to his center by the net and it becomes a quick breakout. Smith tries the same play, in the same area of the ice against the Habs and it becomes a horrible turnover. Why? ADA processed and reacted to the situation a bit faster then Smith. ADA will succeed due to the fact that his skill set lines up well with the way hockey as evolved. He just needs more experience. Probably not a coincidence that Brady has played his best hockey this season while being paired with ADA.

The defense is pretty weak at defending.

I think our goaltending covers a lot of mistakes, and I think the ability of two young guys to move the puck also distracts us quite a bit. But the defense doesn’t really do much for me on paper or in a lot of real world settings.

But I also see a lot of trends that are characteristic with younger teams — namely the ability to shut a game out.

It’s frustrating and it needs to change, but I also try to remember that the Rangers have a lineup featuring what essentially amounts to 6 rookies, and someone like ADA who isn’t a rookie but is just finding his footing as a regular.

I think what we’re seeing is how fun and how infuriating it can be to ice a young team.

I’m actually in pretty close agreement with you regarding the defense.

I think the defense will probably be the one of the last components to really catch up with the rest of the rebuild.

My biggest problem with Quinn is that he is “chasing victories”. Andersson and Chytil barely played last night. He plays Hayes too much. After the game, Quinn said he should have given them more ice time. This is not the first time he has said that after a game where Chytil barely played.

Quinn should not be afraid of the younger players making mistakes when he has veteran players making mistakes all over the ice.

The Rangers are going to play this game until February when Hayes eventually gets traded.

Zuccarello didn’t play last night and still both young players barely played.
Rookie coaches make mistakes too? No way!

Which, in the grand scheme of this rebuild, makes what they did the past year - adding Pionk, DeAngelo, Rykov, Lindgren, Hajek, Miller, Lundkvist and Keane - a very forward-thinking.

This thread is actually just a great example (and this occurred when we were a good team also) of how high people get during a winning streak and when it ends they freak out.

As always the team that was streaking, good or bad, isn't as good or bad as that.

If they lose tonight people will hopefully be back to Earth again.

Let’s assume the team finished the season with 12 more loses than wins (regulation and OT).

That works out to only two more losses than wins every month, or about one more defeat than victory every other week.

I say that merely to provide some perspective as to what a bottom 5 finish looks like when averaged out over the whole season.

I truly believe that we view it as standing out considerably more than it does when we’re battling through it week by week. But it really doesn’t when you take a step back and few the season as a whole.

Quinn twice this week has blatantly admitted he’s not playing the kids enough which should be his biggest priority or we wouldn’t have hired him. He needs to develop our kids not chase the 8th seed.

Look at what DeAngelo is doing. He’d be in the pressbox if McQuaid never got hurt.

This guy is killing Chytil. Killing him. This kid is a horse. He’s a child who’s confidence is going to be fragile as it is. Play him or send him down now. My guess it will take him a month in the A just to recover from this start.

To be fair 2 of our 4 wins on the streak we're shootout wins which could of gone either way.

That's speculation about his confidence. None of us are in that room. His play is gradually improving game by game. You can see he is attacking the play more rather than thinking/hesitating and being a split second late. He doesn't appear to be unconfident to me.

And there is nothing wrong with that. That is enjoying life and living in the moment. Yes we can always be very objective and analytical and point to all kinds of stats and say that our probability to make the playoffs is 1 % or something like that but where is the fun in that. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with being optimistic :P

I noticed the Oilers came up on here pretty often during the summer, and now people just want to hand prospects ice-time? And this board almost unanimously wants to trade Hayes, but wants his ice-time cut back?

Also, look at a site like www.naturalstattrick.com for ice-time. It shows All Strengths, Even Strength, 5-on-5, 5-on-5 Score & Venue Adjusted, Power play, 5-on-4, Penalty Kill, 4-on-5, and you can adjust this all based on what the game score is.

You think he’s playing better? I think that’s a big time reach. He’s regressed from last year even. He was better in his stint to end the season. Because he was actually playing real mins. He was coming from Hartford where he was dominating. He was FULL of confidence. He doesn’t look anywhere near that good right now. Then again he barely plays so hard to even know.

But I don’t need to be in the room to know a 19 year old kid is a child and is going to have fragile confidence as he grows into a man and finds his way in life. There’s a reason they say you have to treat a guy with kid gloves. It’s for when they’re a kid.

It has been down hill since that one playoff where he looked solid.

It’s one thing to play poorly but the mistakes this guy makes is insane.

I feel for henrik. It’s a game like this where other fans see 3 GAA, and they have no idea what he’s up against, and I’m not referring to the opposition...

Interesting that Sens fans warned us about Redden, Blues and Caps fans warned us about Shattenkirk and Red Wings fans warned us about Smith. Those fans had dumped on those guys BEFORE we acquired them.
