One of the best late round drafters I've ever seen.

I think Shero gets credit for giving the scouts a guide to find speedy high upside guys but I doubt he ever set eyes on Gritsyuk or Bratt before they were drafted. GM definitely has some role in the process given how Fitz has changed the players picked by the same staff.

Eh, it wasn't just the small speedy guys, he drafted Rykov, Maltsev, Zetterlund, and Rango in mid or late rounds.

If all he did was listen to his scouts then that should be a model, Fitz by comparison has been awful.

It’s likely that Fitzgerald had a greater role in the draft, especially after the first round, than Shero did while Shero was the GM.

I can't find the video of the Devils war room from last year's draft, but when we were up in the 3rd round you see Fitz ask his scouts who do they like and one of them made the strong case for Salminen and Fitz asked if he was still on the board (which I thought was odd) and when he told he was he then said ok take him.

It seemed like Fitz went more with the scout's gut feeling than his own.

No, what I meant is that Fitzgerald probably had more of a role in the draft, especially later rounds, when he was the assistant GM. The focus on physical heavy defenseman in 2019 is along the lines of the type of blue line he’s trying to build as GM. Unclear what role he or Shero played in drafting Sharongovich or Grittsyuk.

Yikes, their big board didn't make it three rounds? WTF?

But I recall that clip and what struck me was Fitz knew who that player was. The scout described him as the Finnish Nunber 1 center in such a way that you could tell they had discussed him with Fitz. In my view Fitz isn’t a scout and should defer more to thrn then he seems to. I’m convinced he made vanity picks with Mukhamadullin and Stillman. Hopefully they work out but it’s not great process to my eyes. I blame it on all the video scouting over the pandemic that put Fitz on par with scouts who weren’t watching the games live. With fannies back in the seats I hope Fitz acknowledges the scouts are in a somewhat superior position to him.

Arseniy Gritsyuk said that he is in contact with the scouts of New Jersey.

– Do you keep in touch with New Jersey?

– Yes, I am in contact with scouts who work in Russia, and with a physical training coach. He gives me advice.

The same communication was before, when I was just drafted. They are interested in me. But there is still a year left on the contract with Avangard, and I am happy to work it out to the fullest, and then it will be seen," he said.

Hey @Guadana next time you speak with Gritsyuk you still have do discuss his eventual NJ nickname with him. We can’t have the same mess we had with Sharangovich. Explain that the PHI mascot Gritty takes that off the table so we have to come up with something better.
Has Sharangovich's nickname ever been officially decided? Rango? Shara? Yegor? I missed the poll if there was one... if not, we should get on it to decide it once and for all!

I don’t think so although at this point it’s been kicked around enough that I don’t think it’s confusing when you use any of them.

Those longer nicknames are tough though. I still hope that in NJ Gritsyuk plays with Bratt and Hughes to form the Shrimp and Grits line.
I was gonna say, Grits is the one for Arseny. Easy and memorable!
