Well, you are putting the only 2 players who have scored 30 goals in a season on the same line, with one of them being one who is usually the first man back.

Might work.

Kulemin-Kadri-Kessel (The Poor Acronym Line)
JVR-Grabo-Lupul (Lupul can go back to playing RW if he is more comfortable)

is a pretty solid top six if Kadri is able to handle it.

To wit, part 2: If Luongo were to play the next seven years of his deal in Toronto before retiring, the Leafs would be paying him $43.666 million in salary but only counting $37.31 million against the cap over those seven years, a cap savings of $6.356 million. So if Luongo retires with three years left on his deal (because his salary falls to $1.618 million in the 10th year and then $1 million in the last two years of the deal), the Leafs would get charged that $6.356 million on their cap spread evenly over the remaining three years of his deal.

Down Goes Luongo's value.

If he played 7 years, a 2 million cap hit in 7 years might not be that bad. Kind of like Tucker's buy-out impact.

Maybe the Leafs could trade him to floor team at that time.

Maybe, but the Leafs would still be on the hook for any "cap benefit" they received unless he plays out the full 10 years. Likely reduces Burke's offer.

Should be interesting. I'm an advocate for getting Luongo but not at the price most Canucks fans are asking for.

Honestly that isn't much of a penalty for Luongo if he retires after 7. Gets pretty bad if he retires after 8 though.

Probably an unlikely scenario, but lets say a player signs a contract that has a relatively high salary in the last few years(higher salary than cap). He retires, and has a negative "cap benefit" or whatever you would call it, does their become some cap relief?

Player wouldn't retire

Interesting idea, but as you said, unlikely scenario. I assume they thought of that and would have a rule preventing that though.

Yeah, I'm guessing it would have to be some scenario where a player retires for personal reasons or something, but it would eventually come up.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if they did not prevent it because the backdiving contracts punish for paying more cumulative salary than cumulative cap hit. The reverse imo should allow cap relief in that situation as you took on more cap in previous years than actually paid out.

What happens with a guy like Pronger and Savard? Do they still count against the cap even after they retire due to injury? Or is it just a LTIR thing?

Listening to sportsnet pacific it doesnt sound like toronto is his destination. More towards florida. They have stephen weiss which they may give up.

But who knows. I hope somehow we get him.

They'd give up a top six centre for a goalie they don't really need? What?

Maybe a three-way deal where we get Weiss, Florida gets Lou, and Van gets Bozak, Colborne, and a 2nd? I dunno.

No chance Florida deals Weiss. He's pretty much their only decent center.

Huberdeau sucks.

Also, we have too many wingers. MacArthur is a good player, but I agree that he's not in our long-term plans. I say hold onto MacArthur until the trade deadline, where we can likely get a 1st for him (if he plays ~50 point pace). If Kadri is dealt for Luongo, then I guess MacArthur might be staying. I'd like to see Komarov on the third line, but I suppose 4th will do.

Also wouldn't surprise me if we traded for Stastny. I definitely think a deal can be worked out there.

If we acquire Lu and Stastny, we're a playoff team IMO.

And yeah I don't see Florida moving Weiss either. Makes no sense.

Don't see Lou going to Florida. Doesn't make sense. They can't really take the money and they don't really need a goalie.

Last year, florida only had 3 forwards who passed 32 points (versteeg, fleischmann and weiss) i doubt they trade weiss away. Their top 6 is dreadful, and their goaltending is already good enough. If anything, they need to add to their top 6, not subtract

And they all got half their points against us lol.

They beat us like 7-0, 6-1, etc lol

a guy on a ten year contract who obviously would prefer to be in a specific desitination
not sure i'd want to be the other team that acquires him

flip him to Fla for Markstrom that kid is a stud

No way in hell Florida trade's for Lou when they got a top young goaltender ready to play next season. Only way he goes to Florida is a crap deal, no prospects going back or picks.

Lou to Florida
Markstrom + ? to Toronto
Scrivens, Kadri and ? to Vancouver

What would it take to get Douglas Murray out of SJ?

Liles + MacArthur
For
Murray + Clowe

Mac and Clowe both are upcoming UFA, Liles would be better suited for SJ while leafs add some toughness on the backend.
