I think the reason you see some of these young guys benched and not Staal is that there is no point in trying to light a fire under him. He simply isn't good enough anymore. Too old, too slow and too bad. Buch can be more than he has shown so far, but this is what Staal is. I'm not sure when they actually pull the plug on him but I guess they figure they don't want him sitting around for almost three years.

How many times does it need to be said that the benchings are based on effort, not results? Chytil hasn't produced at all, but he plays every game because he gives a good effort every game, and in practice, I would bet. Fast has 1 point in the last 7 games, but no one works harder. If Buchnevich gave a consistent effort, he would play consistently.

Patrick Laine is currently on the 4th line in Winnipeg, so anyone can be demoted, especially a player like Buch who has always left us wanting more.

I don't know. I assumed Shattenkirk was benched for performance. As was Pionk.
