Pool: 11th Annual Statsy's WJC Pool

I GIVE UP! No more hope or side-handed optimism, my team sucks and is constantly in the box and playing like...crap. Lysell can definitely skate but c'mon man...your future may be skating as the Genie in Disney's Stars on Ice...

While I have the board:
All Hail Connor Bedard, the boy is incredible and the way he closed that game yesterday was legendary.

Sorry for the delay, but that Canada / Slovakia game took a lot out of me yesterday. Damn, that was thrilling!

That QF day turned out to be one of the bigger scoring days in recent memory. Leading the charge was Christien, who's massive 15 point day (Ufko with 5 assists!) vaulted him from second last back into contention, just a couple points behind second. FightingSioux picked up 12, buoyed by a big game from his Czech players, to increase his lead to 10 points. GrandLarseny, much like team Canada, remains almost entirely dependent on Connor Bedard, yet somehow the phenom is making it work for both of them. GL remains in second spot with 44, but has to now fight off a host of challengers for that position... and will have to do so minus four players that were just eliminated (Still got Bedard, though! :thumbu:). WTK picked up 11 yesterday to jump Canada4Gold and Khabby in to third. C4G continues to tumble down the standings as Sweden continues to find it difficult to score goals, yet he was given a lifeline with the stunning game-winning SHG by the Swedish captain to keep Sweden and C4G's pool still in action. On a huge scoring day when everyone else recorded between 7 and 15 points, leave it to Tomsburninghat to only pick up 2. With half his team eliminated yesterday, the pool record low appears to be fait accompli.

Yesterday's Totals:

Christien- 15 pts
FightingSioux- 12 pts
WeThreeKings- 11 pts
Statsy- 8 pts
Canada4Gold- 7 pts
GrandLarseny- 7 pts
Khabby- 7 pts
Tomsburninghat- 2 pts

Scoring this year is out of control. I'm on pace to beat the winning score last year and I'm in 6th. Someone should tell everyone to stop scoring so much. Except Sweden of course

I actually feel quite vindicated by Sweden's poor performance. I didn't take anyone from that team in either pool, and but for that terrible last minute Finnish powerplay (with a couple unlucky bounces, if you go back and watch it), that would have been a matter stroke. The only problem is that the team I was riding instead, Finland, would prove to be just as bad, and with a QF elimination, conclusively worse. The best laid plans of mice and men...

As a team they haven't been as good as I expected but because of the pool(which is the reason I went heavy on them) they've put up a bunch of points anyway. Stromgren has been a disappointment(I didn't think he'd be the 13th forward), and I would like Ostlund to get more but Bystedt has made up for that. I didn't get Lysell thankfully who's been the main disappointment for them. In my pool Sandin Pellikka has been disappointing but Jansson has made up for that. I've been mostly happy with my Swedes.

We are now down to the final two games and just about ready to hand out some hardware! FightingSioux is sitting pretty with a 6 point lead over WeThreeKings, who used a monster 4 point game from Joshua Roy to jump past GrandLarseny into second place. GL, shockingly only getting production from Bedard, now finds himself tied with Christien for third. Christien finally got some support from Adam Fantilli as part of a 4 point day that has him in a decent position entering the final day for a podium finish. Still within striking distance are both Canada4Gold and Khabby, who currently find themselves tied in 5th with 44 points. Statsy gets another win from Milic (and is hoping for one more today!) and a pair of points from Stankoven to hit the 40 point mark, but would need something crazy to happen on the last day to make any headway up the standings. Poor Tom picked up three points to hit 19 for the tournament.

Yesterday's Totals:

WeThreeKings- 6 pts
Christien- 4 pts
Statsy- 4 pts
Canada4Gold- 3 pts
FightingSioux- 3pts
Tomsburninghat- 3 pts
GrandLarseny- 2 pts
Khabby- 2 pts

Well, that was crazy. The BMG ends 8-7 in OT as Sweden's offense comes out of hibernation, just as their goaltending goes into hibernation. The US continues firing goals as they have all tournament while Kaidan Mbereko comes out of the bullpen to pick up the win for Augustine, who was pulled after 5 innings... uh... I mean goals.

Khabby picks up an impressive 7 points in that one game to pull into third place, just a couple of points behind WTK. FightingSioux scores 4 to cross the 60 point barrier and maintain a healthy lead. There is a wild battle still being fought for the Bronze as GrandLarseny, Christien, and Canada4Gold are all tied at 50 points, just one behind Khabby. Statsy seems to have run out of runway. Tom picked up a point! Always nice.

We'll see what the Gold Medal Game brings us. I'm guessing more insanity... as is tradition in the WJC. Man, I love this shit!

BMG Totals:

Khabby- 7 pts
Canada4Gold- 6 pts
FightingSioux- 4 pts
GrandLarseny- 4 pts
WeThreeKings- 4 pts
Christien- 4 pts
Statsy- 3 pts
Tomsburninghat- 1 pt

And there we have it! Team Canada wins Gold, and so does FightingSioux! The 65 points also eclipses the previous pool record of 64 jointly held by Canada4Gold and the legendary BigPapaSmurff. This is the first Statsy Pool championship for FightingSioux. Congrats!

WeThreeKings hangs on to take the Silver for the second consecutive tournament (*that we concluded a pool for). In a stunning late breaking development, I just noticed I had missed two of Ryan Ufko's points, so it's Christien with Bronze and Khabby is now a point off the podium. (Sorry Khabby)

Fourth through seventh ended up being extremely close with just 4 points separating four players. Tomsburninghat smashes the pool's record low total. Like... he OBLITERATED it. Man, it was really something!

It was a great tournament and a fun pool as always! Thanks for playing, everybody.

I figured that Sweden loss would be too much to overcome with just 2 Canadian defenders in the final. If literally any player pots a goal for Sweden I get 2 points for the goalie win and I have the entire Swedish team so surely would get a point on the winning goal to take Bronze.

Oh well, it was a very close pool 2nd through 7th all tournament, and the other 2 guys set record so we all have something to be proud of. FightingSioux winning by 10 to take down my points record without having Bedard's points sure is impressive. Well done.

Thanks again Statsy. Looking forward to trying to take my crown back next year

Thanks again Statsy for running the pool! You do a great job and it's always great to take part. Despite it taking me so long to recover from the utter disaster of my team this year, I will be back with a vengeance next year. Honestly, I would love for a handicap of all teams once we draft to project how we'll finish before it gets started...I just couldn't have expected Lysell, Ohgren and Lambert to be that bad. I'd even put those three in an NHL lineup now and they could compete against Chicago, Columbus and the Canucks...:(

Enjoy the rest of the season Gents, see you in December!
