This society is getting sicker by the day....

Nutjob is from the town over ...where I grew up.

I visit my mom in Bucks and I see more and more nutcases with poitical flags, signs, effigies etc on their properties, cars etc. Sick troubled people...

Ok computer bros, someone at my office is trying to set up a double monitor workspace at her house and I am good but not great with this stuff. I have a picture but it is a shitty picture, anyway, the back of her computer tower has a classic blue VGA port. No HDMI and no Display Port. There is right next to the VGA port what appears to the same port but a different color (aqua) with a symbol that looks like this: |o|o| does anyone have any idea what this cable is and if it can be used for a dual monitor setup or does she need a new tower?

There are a few games where I noted that you should definitely wait for a sale, but it's also good general advice because there are always sales around the corner. Amazon and Target often do B2G1. My friends in general are not huge on worker placement games or social deduction ones, so I know less about them. But we do have and enjoy some.

Things to look into that are not overly complex or fussy:

Azul (There are also a whole bunch of additional Azul games that range from good to great. None of them are expansions. They're all standalones.)
Wingspan (The expansions are in general very good.)
Pandemic or any of it's Legacy versions. This is co-op. If you think a Legacy game might appeal to you, I would choose Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 over any other Legacy version of any game. Our board is framed on my office wall, signed by everyone.
The Quacks of Quedlinburg is very good, but I wouldn't buy it without getting the Big Box, which is tough to find. The expansions add a lot here.
7 Wonders (Second Edition) Definitely wait for a sale. You'll find it for 20-30 tops.
Dominion (Second Edition) I would wait for a sale on the Big Box on this one. I'm pretty sure I snagged it for $30-40 with all of the expansions included.
Splendor There is also a Duel version of this. We basically don't buy anything that restricts itself to 2, so I have no experience.
Camel Up (Second Edition) I know it looks like you're a camel. You are not. You are wagering on which camel will win the race.
Galaxy Trucker This is a real time game where you will be scrambling. It needs the right group that revels in chaos.

Quick games. Sometimes that's what you want or you need an end of night/pre-meal filler.

Love Letter This has a million different re-skins much in the same vein as Monopoly.

Here are some very common suggestions for gateway games and why I didn't list them:

Ticket to Ride: Too expensive for what it is. Pretty easily solvable and the "best" strat tends to piss people off.
Betrayal at House on the Hill: The second phase of this game is horribly imbalanced to the point of it often being an autowin for one side. But if you have the group that just wants to wander around a haunted house and doesn't care about the balance, it can be fun. We still do play it sometimes.
Star Realms: Strictly 2 players
Agricola: Too complicated for a gateway game to me. It could be that I'm not good at explaining it, but I've never had a newer person grasp it quickly.
Munchkin: My wife loves this game and gets angry at me if I do anything to her. You cannot get me to say a good word about it. f*** Munchkin.

This person needs a new computer. the aqua port is a Serial port used for connecting Mice/Keyboard/Periphs....the money they are spending on another monitor should be spent on another computer. Chances are tower is probably 15+ years old if it doesn't have multiple graphic output options.

2-4 mostly.

I might also own parcheesi? And backgammon and a couple cribbage boards.

Target has (or recently had?) buy 1 get 1 50% off board games. I'm in the same boat as you and have been trying to expand my household board games past Monopoly, Parcheesi, and Sorry.

I also generally play with 2-5 people and my playing group generally consists of people who would not consider themselves fans of board games.

Azul - Very fun game that's easy to pick up
Ticket to Ride - The reason I think my group likes this game is that they don't really "meta" or strategize too much. I think how "fun" this game is greatly depends on your group
Carcassonne - Tile matching game. Only played a couple of times, but have had fun
Pandemic: The Cure - As @JojoTheWhale mentioned this is an off-spring of the traditional Pandemic board game. The Cure involves dice rolling (action die) and a simplified playing area (in my opinion). The dice rolling keeps players engaged and the fact you can press your luck and keep rolling also helps keep people engaged in their turns.
Dead Man's Chest - a fun, quick, press your luck game. Once you learn what all the cards do games typically don't take more than 15 minutes.
Blockus - Competitive tetris between 2-4 people.

I've had my eye on wingspan for a bit.

I don't think I'd be good at Pandemic, I'd be undermining everyone's efforts in order to see humanity die out.

Android/iOS can be a good place to try things for less if you’re unsure. Same goes for Tabletop Simulator on Steam.

Re: Boardgames

I'm a big fan of The "X" That Built America docuseries. In The Toys one there are a couple episodes about games. Fascinating stuff.

The guy who invented Srabble spent literal years compiling his information about frequency of letters in the English language, because he had to do it "by hand" Made spreadsheets all filled out by hand.

The inventor of Clue got the idea from the murder mystery dinner parties he was exposed to. Poor guy made some money years later, but got nowhere near what he could've (no royalties!)

Jenga was invented by a woman who just came up with it as a building block game she played with her son.

Rubik's Cube was made by a college professor to teach his students how to mentally map 3D situations.

Quite a bit more interesting stories if you like to nerd out to those type of things.

OK @JojoTheWhale, I added onto my gaming bookcase and have some room for new boardgames. I'm probably going to grab a copy of Catan finally. I have Risk and a chessboard. Hit me.
Empire Builder (or many variants) is one of my favorites. It's way OOP though.
7 wonders (3-7players)/7 wonders duel (2 player)
Pandemic

If you like LOTR, War of the Ring 2 is great..but long.

For casual fun with groups of people...

Any of the Ravensberger movie themed games are fun. Wizard of Oz is probably my favorite.

There is a Clue card game, which removes all the dumb dice/moving component of the board game that's very fun.
