Did you take your malaria vaccine

No vaccine really available... so was just anti-malarials. Only vaccines (as far as I know) that work for malaria have to be taken in childhood...

before I went had the Hep A injection (1 of 2, having 2nd in a few months) and the oral Typhoid vaccination.

And then had anti-malarials the whole time. One pill a day for a couple of days before went, and then for like a week after get back too, so still on them.

Though tbh they are not a million miles away from eradicating malaria. 12 cases per 1000 people and their plan (which wont be met) is eradication by 2025.

Got bitten maybe 10x there over 14 days (almost all in the south in last few days) even using Deet 50%... so better safe than sorry!

You're totally right, it's just malarone while you travel around. I always got the typhoid and the malaria travel stuff mixed up. Glad you kept up with it though. We had a malaria kid come in just last week

Isn't the typhoid vaccine a frozen pill? Wild

It has to be kept refrigerated and was I think 3 doses... yeh... totally wild for a vaccine! Aparently lasts for around 5 years.

Will probably get the yellow fever vaccine soon just so dont have to rush around to get it if choose to go somewhere in mainland sub-saharan Africa soon...

this time round was a bit rushed to get the first dose of Hep A and the Typhoid vaccine, as only booked a few weeks prior to travel!

Guess next place will go will be Cape Verde... so wont need anything new there, and tbh probably wont even need Malarone as they have not had a domestic Malaria case in like 5 years.

Once get 2nd Hep A dose and yellow fever will really only be missing: Cholera, rabies and Japanese encephalitis vaccines aha...

10. Crossed the equator for the first time... on a boat... driven by the guy who basically originated surf culture in the country, this guy Shun who has been featured in a few documentaries! And who was lovely.
I'm not the most well-versed sailor, but I believe this officially makes you a shellback, so congrats on that!

After spending two weeks in São Tomé here are my thoughts:

First time in sub-Saharan Africa!

1. It was probably the country I have felt safest in of the ~35 I have set foot in... of course a lot of poverty and certainly strange to be walking down dirt roads and people living in wooden houses with no windows they had built themselves... and everyone having machetes! But I dunno... people were just so relaxed.

Now, it apparently is the African nation with the lowest crime rate! And the homicide rate is less than half of the USA... but yeh...

2. People were some of the friendliest and most helpful I have ever came across. Now, probably helps that my girlfriend is a fluent Portuguese speaker... and people were even nicer to her/us when they found out she was half Moroccan... but yeh... EVERYONE says hello, good day... and if have any trouble (for example car got stuck twice!) instantly people come to help.

3. Very few people were "pushy" when came to trying to get you to buy things... and virtually no begging despite the poverty. If you said "no" then 95% of people were like "Okay then"... and only came across one beggar in entire two weeks, and she seemed like a tweaker or similar and was harassing everyone, locals, us, taxi drivers etc.

4. It was the most beautiful country I have been to... it has virtually no tourists (top 10 least visited on earth) and no idea how. Right on the equator with jungle, infinite sandy beaches, mangroves and a climate that is basically between 80 and 90 every day of the year... and honestly, two days in a row had one of the most beautiful beaches have ever seen (Praia Jalé) totally to ourselves.

5. The food was generally very good. They have an incredible array of fruit and veg that grow and use them well... basically 90% of the meat is fish and octopus. Had Sailfish, Baraccuda and Flying fish there for first time ever... and the best octopus had ever eaten. The chicken was generally excellent too... but the show stoppers were things like their Bread Fruit, sweet potato, manioc, Cocoyam, Banana Pao... they fried a lot of them potato style and tbh better than any potato chips get in the West. Their spicy sauces were great too... also, they have this coconut rice that is unreal. Their local beer, Rosema, is also very solid.

6. I dont like coffee... but had some of their Catura Arabica there from a cooperative called O Monte... and jesus... the first coffee in my life I have liked. Unreal flavour.

7. Had the pleasure of having the best chocolate had ever eaten in my life, Claudio Corallo, also got to meet him on a tour and he explained a lot about chocolate.

8. Got to see a sea turtle laying its eggs... which was pretty f***ing cool.

9. The roads in the south of the country were horrific but after a day was very fun pretending to be a rally driver.

10. Crossed the equator for the first time... on a boat... driven by the guy who basically originated surf culture in the country, this guy Shun who has been featured in a few documentaries! And who was lovely.

11. Made some friends there and will definitely be going back!
This sounds amazing. I want to go. How were costs and accomodations?

Flights from Lisbon were around 500 dollars each return.
Accommodation was on average ~60 dollars a night. (can ofc be far cheaper but stayed in pretty nice places)
Car hire was around 500 dollars for 2 weeks.
Breakfast was included everywhere we stayed... and usually had only 2 meals a day as so busy! But evening meals I would say averaged ~15 dollars per head at restaurants with a drink... which is a bit pricy for sub-saharan Africa... buuut can be far cheaper if eat in smaller places or get a place can cook for yourself.

For 2 people, 2 weeks, all in all with flights, accomodation, car hire and fuel, and then ALL spending money? Was around 3600 dollars.

Could have been less if had hired a scooter instead of a car, had not eaten out every day etc... but tbh were not really counting the pennies when there.

One weird thing is it is kind of hard to get cash once there. Only a few cash machines in country that can withdraw internationally, they only accept Visa, and sometimes dont work aha. So brought all money would spend in cash with us. BUT we found that a lot of places accepted card despite the internet saying they did not.

I believe one day the parlay gods will let you get a big one.
I did hit this one on Sunday. Really thought I had that one for $250 last night. Of course the Steelers f*** it up. Guy can't event throw for 175 yards. Put ESP in there and I bet he throws for 200. Still betting off the $100 I put in week 1 of the NFL season, so I'll take it

Anyone know where to get one of those fancy knee scooter things in the Bucks area? I jacked up my ankle today and I'm definitely going to need one of those things to get around for a bit. I could get one delivered, but I'd prefer to pick one up Sunday or Monday in a store if possible.

(moving this here because I don't want to disrupt the NFL thread lol)

Honestly read more manga if you like the shows. Sometimes it just doesn't cover everything or even worse they change stuff.
I specifically avoid doing that, even when it comes to shows I really like and do desperately want to read.

I don't want to know what happens if I'm going to watch the shows and I also don't want to be disappointed if the show varies from the manga in a way I don't like. I just want to enjoy the show as it's own thing. If anything, I'd read the manga after I finish the show, just to see differences and any additional information.

I read along as the manga was released in two shows I was really into a long time ago and I wish I hadn't.
