He's been less bad recently but he's still not himself.
I know this is a meh excuse, but being uncertain about his future might have something to do with it. Yea he’s supposed to be a professional and try not to let that get in the way of his play, but sometimes you can’t help it.

I mean it was a great deflection, just the wrong net. Lol.

Just got back home from the game.
Hank was the man tonight. Rangers were by and large dominated. Canes had 70% possession. They shot a lot of pucks into Hank early, which got him comfortable and he just stoned them for the rest of the game.
Plenty of Ranger fans in attendance.

Chytil only getting 11 votes is effing criminal...the kid was frikkin amazing tonight.
He was good again tonight. He has gotten to be very tough to deal with along the wall. He took a beating and came out with the puck more times than not.

Lundqvist was sitting at .906 SV% on Wednesday morning and now he’s at .922. Lol. Guy still has it.

I’d imagine loves playing Carolina because they’re the Corsi kings and Lundqvist is always way better when he faces a lot of shots. Feels like he has 30 40+ save wins vs the Canes in his career.

He just can't seem to score despite many grade A scoring chances. You can call it bad luck but when it happens over and over again you gotta think its the player doing a really poor job finishing.
Which makes early last year confounding because he was sniping the hell out of the puck. His shot early last season was lethal.

Then King was on his game for sure.

But there is also this issue with Carolina, and I'm talking over the last few years. They seemingly paradoxically generate a lot of pressure and possession, yet it doesn't translate into overall long term success.

This is in no way a knock against the King who was great. yet it does effect the overall analysis of the game. The Rangers didn't look as if they were "on their heels" even though Carolina is deep in the zone. The entire team played a much stronger game via videotape than pure metrics will show because of the Hurricanes M.O.

47 shots and 2 fluke goals beat him, WOW. One of his best performances ever. Meanwhile, give our guys credit, we were outplayed but all 3 non-empty net goals were legit. I think Buchnevich goal maybe you can blame the goal for a bit, I feel like he overplayed it, but not like we got 3 stinkers. I missed the game if it wasn't obvious. Glad to get the win and not have to stress out a 47-19 shot disadvantage.

Much better 2nd and 3rd. You can see the difference defensively when there's 5 in the picture and they're getting on pucks, getting on bodies and getting sticks in lanes.

That said, this team will continue to struggle against heavy/fast teams. Canes, Bruins, Jets, Isles, Blues -- all teams that will give us fits until we stabilize our defense.

Perhaps my favorite moment of the game was seeing Lindgren/Fox out there to close out the game. They are by far the most reliable pairing defensively -- despite being two rookies.

Hajek/Trouba were often caught in their own end, running around. And Staal/D'Angelo --- yikes. Staal is a possession black hole. Which makes D'Angelo the worst partner for him. Because D'Angelo is great when he has the puck but scary in the D zone when he doesn't.

To me, Fox is already better than D'Angelo because he's better defensively. He stays on the right side of the puck and opposing players. And his anticipation, including in the D zone, is off the charts.

I agree that D'Angelo is close to elite in the offensive zone, and very good as long as the puck is on his stick. But he needs a really stabilizing partner.

On a middling team TDA is a 2-4. On a contender, D'Angelo's a 5-6 D-man/PP specialist. Think modern day Mattieu Schneider. (unless he develops his D-zone game).

Other notes: Buch was great. Though on his goal, he victimized Jake "formerly known as Brady Skjei of the Toronto Maple Leafs" Gardiner. Just a total lack of awareness and jam on that play for Gardiner.

Lias has officially lost all of his confidence. Really fighting it all game. Just tentative all over the place. And with his foot speed, he cannot afford that at all. Having Manny Malhotra flashbacks. I loved Manny and would have been more than fine with him as the Rangers 3C of the future, but no, he had to be run out of town because of a disconnect between coach and management mixed with impatient fanbase. I fear it's happening again.

Finally, we need Hajek and Skjei to simplify their games. We have Fox and D'Angelo. We need everyone else on D to settle the F down and play simple, smart and firm. Five ft passes not fifty. And we need the forwards to support the puck in the D zone always.

If Hajek/Skjei can't simplify their game -- then Reunanen, Rykov and Robertson will soon have their chance to be those stabilzing forces on the left. And Lundkvist on the right. (I'm not including Keane and Miller here because they're less polished in their own end.)

Canes had a ton of grade A chances. His glove hand was quick all night. His lateral movement prevented a couple of sure tap-ins. Hank and his saves were a huge factor in getting the boys the W.
