I was at the draft, the so many people on TV and HF Boards other threads think the canucks fans were "booing"
Well my section was more stunned, it was not boos, it was more like "holy **** were picking a russian" stunned sound.

After people clued in, the cheering started.
I don't think many people hated the pick

Ya i was there too and tbh I’m not sure what the sounds were. At first I thought we were booing (it was a “boo-y” crowd all night) but I think it was more just a mixture of peoples surprised reactions, without one common thing being said or yelled. He definitely got a cheer quickly after. I mean we are generally a pretty petulant fanbase but even we aren’t so bad as to boo a kid live as his hockey dream is coming true.

I don't mean to bring politics into this but....

Russia and North America aren't exactly the best buds right now and Putin is a hell of a propagandist...

I mean..

What's the likelihood of a 17 year old kid who grew up in in the capital city of Russia being a Canuck 4 Life?

I don't know.

(we all saw how EASY it was for Tryamkin to peace out of this clustereff of an organization).

Is that you Jake Virtanen?

Maybe it's Jake?

Da.... it's the Russian version of Jake Virtanen.

DId anyone here actually read the report on his playing time over in Russia? The comments in this article talking about his time in the KHL are WAyyyyyyy off. He averaged like 3 minutes of ice time a game and was playing for the best team in the league. Read that article that was posted a little earlier and you will get a much better sense on this guy. A lot of extenuating circumstances regarding his lack of production (VHL is a low scoring league, he was on the best team and leading scorer on team only had 33 points in 50 something games etc.). I think with a little stability (playing on the same team all year) we will see a marked improvement in his production.

This pick has the potential to be super solid for us. I'm not a Benning bro but kudos to him for at least taking what they thought was the BPA here (even knowing the clock is ticking on his tenure here). Pretty surprised actually.......

Not really sure how I feel about this pick. I didn't put much thought into him because I thought there was no way we'd select him and I wasn't particularly fond of him because of his production. I guess you could say I hope he proves me wrong.

Either way I think we'll know fairly soon what we have here. If his production continues to be a major red flag into next season, then that says a lot to me. Some comparables I see in him are Burrows and Radulov because he's just so damn hard working. Thats one thing nobody can criticize Podkolzin about. Pretty advanced two way game as well. For these reasons I don't doubt he can be an NHLer but I question his upside and I question his attitude towards the NHL/North American/speaking English. He has some pretty bad quotes out there regarding those things.

Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing how he looks against some other top prospects at the WJC this winter.

Yeah totally.

What you said.

Super solid.

I will sleep better now.

Thanks.

He sort of looks like a Virtanen type to me, but with better offensive zone awareness and cycle game.

Does not look like Virtanen to me. Virtanen would almost always go wide and try to go around dmen often shoot from bad angles.

Pods reminds me of Horvat where he's trying to go right through dmen to the net.

At the end of the day, I think you have to look at it and think that, assuming Podkolzin hits, he'll basically be the perfect addition to our top six alongside Pettersson or Horvat.

That's what I like as well.If he can iron out a few wrinkles,he would bring some real intensity and grit to our group while being skilled enough to play with elite players like Petey and Hughes. He was probably the most likely guy available at 10 to be a top line player which is encouraging.

I'm a bit puzzled why they passed on Boldy, who seems like a much safer pick but with similar upside, but maybe Podzolkin's skating and puck handling at speed won the day.

Go to the last link i posted at 7;40 and watch and listen

scouching report 13

Ya i saw that one a few days ago. Was being mainly facetious but also some truth to it. After the piece on his passing - which compliments him for being a good, solid, basic passer but doesn’t attempt many high danger/difficulty passes - he goes on to be a bit critical of Podkolzin’s shot selection, saying he’s a bit indiscriminate with his decisions to shoot the puck. Which ties back to the comments about not attempting many high danger passes, as he is often quick to default to shoot instead.

Not the end of the world, but I suspect it is one of the main aspects to his game that we will want to see him improve in over the next couple of years.

I would have loved zegras, and i would have taken caufield.

With that said, I was not sure good or bad on podkolzin. He is a boom or bust pick. He has talent and is still only 17 years of age which gives me hope.

I would have even more faith if judd bracket made this pick, i said the same thing last year when i was unsure of tyler madden, but i trusted judd.

If the Russian factor didn't exist with this kid it's very likely he isn't there at 10th for us. This kid can flat out play and some rankings had him as high as 4th. I hate to give Benning and CO. credit because, well, they suck, but this is a pretty good pick.

The most reassuring thing about this pick is that it is a pick for the future, like literally, he cannot play for us for two years. Benning could well be gone by then.

I like the way the team's drafting is changing
