Not sure I’ve seen a single comment yet blasting the team for generating a grand total of 2 shots on goal in the third period.

You know how when normal teams are down multi goals, but turn it on a generate shots due to “score effects?” We couldn’t even manage that. Just bent over and took it. Total give up, which is a black eye on the whole group.

But ya, all Skinner’s fault.

Tons of them in the GDT.

The whole team looked like they were roofied. No denying that, but again it’d be nice to have a goalie that can pick up that slack. Of the 5 he allowed, I’d say 3 were stoppable and 1 he looked clueless on. If this was a one-off for him and he’s usually a consistent, reliable goalie most of us would be saying “scrap it, move on.”

The problem with Skinner is these kinds of performances are the norm, not the exception.

Bouchard is fine. His warts aren't even really warts if mistake we make doesn't go in the back of the net.

Even with him playing poorly this year, and all our mistakes always going in due to our goaltending, he's still a huge net positive.

Thing is - he's got upside that's absurd - literally outscored Makar in less games in the playoffs. I get that he's frustrating at times, but you keep Bouchard almost no matter what. No lateral moves - if you're trading Bouchard you better be winning that deal hands down.
I should stay out of this, but what does the bolded even mean?
In reality his "warts" are like really big nasty warts you need to get frozen off. What on earth are you talking about????

I no joke don't understand how people can keep defending him. He makes so many turnovers and they ALWAYS end up in the back of the net. And his offence is so been poor this year.

Stop with the advanced stats BS

Riding the coattails of team Canada.

Ok, let's talk boxcars simple stats then.

You have to score more goals then the other team to win hockey games. The team does that consistently when Bouchard is on the ice.

All the while - Bouchard is having unprecedentedly low levels of puck luck. His career on ice sitting percentage is around 9.6% at 5v5, this year it's at 8.4%. Based on his typical on ice point share, which is consistent this year to the rest of his career, he's missed out on around 19 points just due to puck luck / PDO.

More than that - I don't think I've seen anyone say the team played well.

We deserved to lose, full stop.

That’s all great. Bouchard has been directly responsible for three goals against off frankly dumb as f*** plays over the last two games, and it’s a massive theme lately. It’s denying reality to say otherwise.

Scoring one in your own net per game doesn’t show on the models. He can be a great player for 99% of the game, but when the 1% is as catastrophically dumb as it has been lately it’s a problem.

“Oh but the goalie should have stopped them!” Insane excuse for inexcusable and consistent plays from him.

Those aren't advanced stats. Those are goals we score and goals we let in. Those are 100 year old metrics.

As simple as it gets.

As simple as it gets - the Oilers score more goals then they let in when Bouchard is on the ice.

He's on pace to be +29 on the year. That's very very good.

Cool. Would be nice if he stopped coughing up the incredibly preventable goals against too.

Scoring one on his own net is bad, obviously. But he scores more than he gets scored against. That's how you win hockey games.

This isn't a hard concept.

Would you rather have a player that gives up 2 goals a game but always scores 3? Or a player that gives up a goal every two games but scores every three? Which player are you more likely to win a championship with?

Or *checks notes* by giving up double digit odds man rushes in a game.
Skinner is back to sub 900 sv% on the fourth place team in the league at the end of the season. Worse than that, he's playing arguably his worst hockey of the season recently, giving up 3 goals on ten shots routinely, and then 5 on 20 tonight, on what were generally all stoppable goals. He is a train wreck, but some of you will never figure it out. Hopefully management does, because there is zero chance this team wins the cup with a 900 sv%. Zero.

It also isn’t a hard concept to grasp that when he barfs up about a goal against per game, it decreases the chance of the team winning significantly. That’s exactly what he’s been doing lately.

“Oh just ignore that back breaker he coughed up to toss the game because he scored a few points several games ago.”

Talking about winning championships. Comical. How many Stanley cup champs have a top pair d man throwing pucks away like this?

How many odd man rushes did the Flyers hand to the Oilers today?

We already know full well how this team plays after a long lay off. The D is out of sync when there's any kind of long break, the goaltending is not good enough to hold the fort in that case because it's a bunch of back up goalies.

The only question is how long will this slide last.

The scheduling is a bit unfortunate as most of the team is on Mountain time so an 11 AM start is brutal and even worse for the guys who went out to Cabo or Hawaii and got used to Pacific time or worse.

Is McDavid playing through an injury right now? When he took his turn raising the 4 Nations Cup, he barely lifted it up high, his left hand grip looked like he was using one finger and thumb (rather than a full grip), and when he handed it off to Makar, it was pretty awkward.
