Also in the mix:

Madden
Lind
Gadjovich
MacEwen

Exactly. I actually edited in Madden while you were posting.

Madden and MacEwen have very reasonable chances of being long term fixtures.

I didn’t include Lind and Gadjovich on my list because I’d still like to see more from them. They both look like long shots to me right now.

So we got someone very few people were hoping for, a lot of the guys we hoped for went further back then I'd have thought, and we didn't trade the pick for a rental D.

Not the worst outcome.

I'm surprised with our pick, but not angry. Another year (minimum, I understand he owes two years but has a buyout clause) of development away from the Canucks will probably do him good. See Horvat, Tryamkin, Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes.

If he was from NA I'm sure people would have debated him at first OA.

I hate when people say things like this, that's complete pure BS. There are valid concerns about if he actually has high end skill and what his potential actually is. If he were from NA sure there would be no fear of him bolting for Russia, but he's not a first overall talent.

From everything I’ve read and seen he seems Like a guaranteed NHL player (provided he comes over).

His range is probably high end defensive 15-15 guy in your third line to high end defensive 55 -60 point guy in the second. Will be your teams top pk guy.

I think he will be the heart guy you need in the playoffs. Add a little gritty skill to the team.

At the spot I think he didn’t have the highest ceiling but he he had a high enough ceiling with the highest floor.

I don't think there are many folks who question skill level itself, but there are plenty who wonder why the heck that didn't turn into more production (myself included).

He wasn't the pick I would have made at 10 (Boldy all day), but at least I didn't have the visceral urge to throw up immediately after, like I did when we picked Juolevi. It actually draws the same type of cautious optomism I had for the Pettersson and Hughes picks, though it's due to the complete opposite reasoning.

With the former, you could see the skill and production, but wondered if their frames would hold up at the pro level. With Podkolzin, you see the skill and ideal frame, but you wonder why the production is so limited. Hopefully it's because of some icetime or Russian voodoo issues that we're not privy to, and it all works out.

I don't think he has high end offensive skill. I see, as some have said, a Horvat level of offense. Which would be just fine in my books. He is a pitbull and tracks people all over the ice. I think he was picked in just the right spot and has a real chance to be an impact player. Just not elite.

Reasons I like the pick

- potentially adds something the team is short on. Can play hard in traffic and get to the net. Has the intensity and grit to battle on the forecheck and create screens in the offensive end. Team can not be all about finesse and the Canucks need players that will compliment the younger skilled player they have. Others like Zegras seemingly have more skill but that might be redundant, You're not going to win with just skill.

- potentially has enough skill to be in your top 6.

- good two way player

- has a nasty streak

- has a good shot and PP potential.

- that Benning did not bail and use the the draft to make some immediate patches in the lineup. At least trying, long last, to do the right thing

- creates the hope that a player like Tryamkin can be re-acquired.

Could make a case that Boldy was the better choice but he is not as good a skater. Whatever. Be interesting to watch how the two develop.

Boldy didn't even go 1 pick after Podkolzin...it was Soderstrom. I'm so glad we didn't draft Soderstrom. Like another poster said, I feel somewhat like I did when we took Pettersson (especially knowing that Podkolzin does plan to come over to North America in 2 years). I'm intrigued.

Was waiting for your viewpoint. We feel the same. Intrigued, and ready to keep tabs on him next season.

I can't believe the Coyotes traded 45th overall to move up to take Soderstrom. I had Soderstrom rated about 17 picks past there.

I think the most important thing is that he plays a very 'North American' game and he's quite a complete player.

Watching St Louis and Boston in the playoffs and their numerous players with complete games who can contribute defensively made me lust for a complete player in this draft. I think Podkolzin is that. Would have loved Zegras as well, as he was my first pick. Newhook would have also been a solid option.

Worst part of the draft was having "Mumbles Smyl" making the selection. Really pathetic - why not the Sedins???

You know what? I **** with this pick.

This is ballsy. And they made a good point that whoever they get at 10 will take at least 2 years to make the team anyways. Zegras was likely their guy but he was gone.

It’s also a move to bring Tryamkin over. Now he sees we’re investing in Russian players more.

Not to mention, the dude should have been a top 5 pick. He’s insanely talented.
This pick has nothing to do with Tryamkin. I really can’t stress this enough. The Chances tree ever plays in the NHL again are low
