Honestly, since all these posts were of similar subject matter, automerge was kind of doing its job. This might be the first instance where automerge isn't actively being the worst feature ever rolled out in the history of the internet, but as a whole, it's pretty far and away the worst feature ever rolled out in the history of the internet.

Well yes. The idea is to consolidate a bunch of posts you've just made into one, which does make sense in theory since if you're all talking about the same thing it'll make sense in the flow of conversation...but in practice, you back read and reply as you go, and not everyone is talking about the same thing. So you get 1 post with 4 wildly different things that don't deserve to be consolidated.
