Yesterday I woke up from a nap to her saying my name. She was standing next to me holding a toy sword.

Child: Daddy, what happens when you stab someone with a sword?
Me: It makes a hole in them and their blood starts to fall out. It may also damage their insides. If the parts inside stop working, or they run out of blood, they die.
Child: And then they become a mummy!?!?
Me: No, not all dead bodies are mummies. You have to make the dead body into a mummy by taking out the organs and filling it with salt.
Child: ...oh (walks away)

It's a selective process, and it doesn't pay to give the truth in more detail than they can internalize. When my daughter was in kindergarten I was talking to the rest of my family about coming across the use of dexter and sinister in a medical article to refer to right and left, respectively. I said that it was interesting that, since right was historically preferable and left was thought to have an association with evil, the respective terms took on positive (dexterity) and negative connotations. The next day, she was sitting in her class next to a boy who was left-handed. When the teacher came over to help him with scissors, my darling daughter blurted out, "My daddy says that people who use their left hand are evil!" The poor boy burst into tears and Mrs. Parent (who was a teacher in that school) had some 'splaining to do.

I looked while posting about this earlier, and I'm actually 11something on blitz which I'm sure is HIGHLY skewed because I've probably played like 10 games or something
