Yes, Kessel was clutch...he's the main reason the Leafs took the 4-1 lead with 10 minutes left in the game...he had a goal and an assist, and was a plus 1...Kessel has weapons that Marner does not, speed to burn and a lethal shot, in addition to an underrated ability to pass the puck.

Here are Kessels playoff stats the 2 years the Penguins won the Cup. Many also thought he was robbed by the media for the Conn Smythe one of the years. One could only dream that Marner could even come close to these numbers.

You have to realize Kessel’s cup winning reform going to Pittsburgh and slotting behind Crosby, Malkin and Letang was made possible by Toronto retaining a portion of his salary for a number of years.

Marner could conceivably go to Colorado or Edmonton and a slot behind Mackinnon, Rantanen, Makar or McDavid, Draisaitl and co. But he would have to not be making $11-12.5 million to make that possible.

It's true that the retention helped facilitate that trade but I don't think the penguins spent their cap perfectly otherwise and with a deep dive into their personnel I'm sure they could have shed 1.2m somewhere and still had Phil Kessel on a cup winning roster there.

I feel the same about Marner. I wouldn't be shocked if he never made a cup or conference final. I wouldn't be shocked if he had a Conn Smythe caliber playoff on a cup winner.

I do think he is/will be overpaid in the sense that his salary will make it hard to build a winning roster here given the other salaries we have. I don't think it'll be impossible or even shocking in a different situation elsewhere.
