Yes, if the Leafs bail in round 1 this year, big changes must happen in Toronto and Shanahan's departure should be the first shoe to drop. He has been paramount in assembling this core and shaping the culture -- both appear to be huge problems once again come playoffs.
How many times can you go to the well with a group of core players who are soft as putty and lack killer instinct? The core and culture are a problem, and it began with Shanahan who made the decision to -- along with Dubas -- neuter the culture with soft, fluffy, and passive-aggressive decision making and concessions.
At a high level, Shanahan has committed to a flawed core and hasn't had the cojones to extract one of the high-priced softies and replace them with an equal player who brings a different dynamic to the table. Instead, he's rewarded these players with massive contracts. Under Shanahan, there has been zero accountability amongst this group. He's basically said, "You underachieved once again in the playoffs? Cool, how about we give you top dollar to do it again." If the Leafs get smoked this round, he needs to be one of the people who fall on the sword.
And he's not alone. If we lose in the 1st round, I don't care what Tavares has left on his crummy deal... he needs to go. If he won't waive, staple him to the press box for 82 games. Enough is enough with the country club mentality. Marner? Gone. Spend the $12 mil annually he'll demand on battle-tested players with heart and grime. I'm talking real core players... not flotsam and jetsam that you grab from the bargain bin in the offseason.
