Right on. Looks like I got a couple options on instacart. (I don't drive) Walmart or farmer's market. Walmart says "euro box" so prolly go with the farmer's market next time I order groceries. They look yummy.

I feel like I've watched at least two seasons of Demon Slayer.

Yah, season one, then Mugen Train arc as a movie and then season 2. They've confirmed the gang is getting back together for a season 3 as well. But the movie that comes after season one is out there as is season 2.

Also, if you've not seen Bleach it's pretty super.

EDIT: Hrm, I might have misread that. Sorry if so. This is why I prefer dub. None of that reading comprehension stuff getting in the way of my good time.
Ah, yeah sorry I meant Season 2 of JJK. The Mugen Train arc is what really got me into Demon Slayer.

there's a series of YT videos I watch about a guy who messes with email scammers and today the streams crossed in a hilarious and unexpected way.

It'll be obvious when you get there, about 1:50 in when he gets photoshopped images of the scammer's fake ID badge.

Bleach starts out good but you can pretty much pinpoint the exact moment that Tite Kubo burned through the story outline he would've crafted while dreaming up/pitching the series and started writing by the seat of his pants. From that point on it becomes hit or miss and his tendency to solve almost every issue with "here's new characters with new powers or an old character with additional unrevealed powers to solve our immediate plot concern!" can get quite frustrating.

Though some of that is very much a shonen anime thing. Writing one's self into a corner and then going "here's a thing you've never seen before with no foreshadowing or logical explanation beyond shonen cliche "doing by the power of wanting it really, really badly" or anything of the sort!" to get out of it happens far too much.

My friend got me to read Bleach when it was at like 1/2 way through and I stuck with it for a couple years but it really started to grind my gears when the chapters basically ended up spanning like 30 seconds of in-world time. Like it was 3 pages of recap, 2 page big splash title, and then like 8 pages of exposition and staring at each other. Drove me nuts.

Yeah, it got very Dragonball-y in how much it dragged things out.

To be fair though, I think that's a symptom of the manga industry. They want cash cow franchises to go on as long as they possibly can and unlike western comics where a company's works generally exist in the same universe and you can drag things out by having overlapping plots, team-ups, and a variety of stories involving the characters that are brought to you by a rotating group of writers that can each bring their own spin on things, a manga series is one author/artist with a single specific plot or string of plots. So I think it behooves the writer to drag things out and slow things down so that the plot last as long as they can possibly make it go.

You know what's hilarious about Bleach? You know how you said a chapter was like 30 seconds? That might not be too far off. The final story arc of the series lasted for like 200 chapters. The Bleach wiki doesn't have individual chapter release dates, but the collected Japanese volume that started the arc was released at the start of June 2012. The final volume that wrapped the series was released in November 2016. It took them 4 and a half years to cover that final arc. The amount of in-universe time those events happened over?

9 days.

Tonight I finally rescued a CD that has been trapped in an old CD player for years!

Way back, when I was commuting to college, I got a new CD player for my car. That car eventually died, but I made sure to pull the CD player out of the car before junking it. I then took that CD player and installed it in a car I had a couple years later, to replace the older and less capable one that it already had.

Unfortunately, what I had forgotten to do was take the CD out of the old CD player before I removed it from the car. For probably seven years now, that CD has been stuck in a player without power. I finally got around to pulling out the toolbox and ripping open the case to access the disc stuck within. It works fine!

The important question is, what was the CD?

Finally unboxed my War for Cybertron toys since they were just collecting dust on my buffet table, and bought some shelves for my weeb game room. The amiibo and disney figures are probably just placeholders for now until I buy better figures; also have a few unboxed amiibos in storage that I should probably open. Not pictured are my other wallscrolls of HxH, Haikyu, and Death Note

If we're sharing our nerdy shit, I got a retroid pocket 2+ recently. It's a little handheld retro game emulator. It can basically play anything up to the ps1 pretty well. It's neat.

Nice. Those are some old-ass Amiibos IIRC. Like the original Smash set? I went mildly nuts for Amiibos for a bit but it became so difficult to find anything I wanted in Canada (I had to take advantage of a family member going to visit friends in upstate NY by having them buy and ship the Smash Mega Man amiibo there because it would've cost an arm and a leg to ship across the border) that I ultimately have only sporadically bought any, usually because they have functionality with a game I'm playing.

Can't say much about the anime figures because they're not series that I watch. I've often thought about going in on some Gundam model kits or something like that but I don't think I have the money or the patience to add an expensive importing hobby to my already expensive collecting vices.

And because I ramble a lot and not everyone needs or wants to read all of this:

It also reminds me I've gotta get some floating shelves to give me a little more display space. I've got the long Transformers shelf right now above my desk and above that are two more shelves on the same track that are used for assorted sports things (bobbleheads, pucks, baseballs, a small cache of McFarlane figures back when those were still a thing) as well as a few random nerdy things (a couple of Funkos even though I have no intention to collect any/many more. I only have 3 for things I really wanted: Proto Man from the Mega Man games, Tali from Mass Effect, and Shantae from... the Shantae games. also an old Lego dragon figurine and my Real Ghostbusters Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man figure from the 80s.) and then one above that for shoeboxes of storage (1 for sports tickets, 1 for Transformers instructions which really need a binder or something because the box is getting full)

These shelves are old enough that I can't match the hardware to extend them since nobody sells particle board shelves with the same veneer finish/color or identical brackets/tracks but maybe a set of 3 or 4 floating shelves would help fill the space. It's all dead area above and behind my TV stand because of the odd shape of the room

If you're at all interested in fleshing out that Beast Wars cast you might find some of the characters out there on sale or clearance. I don't know what it's like in US stores, but my Walmart couldn't give away a big run of early-wave deluxe sized figures (history tells me they almost always waaaaay overstock on the first wave of a new line and end up bleeding off excess stock for like a year afterwards) and usually had a few spare Airrazors on pegs even as recently as today. Rhinoxes also tended to shelfwarm a fair bit after the initial buying surge (not a bad figure. Looks decent in both modes though transforming the bot legs into the rhino hind legs and vice versa is a nerve-wracking nightmare). And Amazon also looks like it has Tigatron and Waspinator on sale for less than normal. Tigatron is a good deal. He shares similar engineering to Cheetor but is actually 1 size tier higher so he ends up being similar in size to Dinobot and Optimus. Waspinator is OK, but not necessarily the most interesting figure Only ones you'd be missing then are Scorponok (again kind of OK but a bit small for a Deluxe) and Terrorsaur (unfortunately a limited-run Amazon exclusive that was apparently super hard to find. I ended up pre-ordering it from both the Canadian and American Amazons because there had been tons of trouble with randomly cancelled pre-orders. Turns out I got both but was able to help out a local collector who got his order canceled after he hooked me up last year with a short-run set of the little tape bots for Soundwave)

Anyways, this is what you're missing:

MissingBWfigs.jpg

And like I said before you can keep an eye out for the last remnants of the season 1 cast that are supposed to be part of this year's line: Transformers Legacy (where the whole gimmick is that it's a mishmash of characters from different iterations of the franchise. From the 2010s shows to the 2000s anime to 90s Beast Wars and even late 80s "Generation 2" re-colors and fresh molds). Tarantulas and Inferno are supposed to show up and I think allegedly there's already a re-release of Terrorsaur as a Target exclusive, though he's painted to look like the original toy with a lot of blue on the limbs and head instead of show-accurate like the one pictured above.

Also if you're ever in the mood to watch the show, the entirety of Beast Wars is on Tubi for free along with basically every other Transformers cartoon made before about 2014 (except the ones that never made it out of Japan. But that's Ok. most of those suck unless you want laughs from the unintentional comedy of the terrible English dub that was made in Hong Kong by people that knew nothing of Transformers for export to other Asian countries like Malaysia or Singapore. More on that in a sec)

Aside from the CG animation showing its age in places, it holds up quite well.

Speaking of the bad english dub, seriously I cannot possibly do justice to how awful this was. Like terrible 70s kung-fu movie so bad it's hilarious. Which makes sense because the production company apparently did a lot of 70s-90s b-movie work on Chinese martial arts flicks or even some of the 90s Godzillas (I watched them all through with dubs and there was a run of early 90s to early 2000s ones where I was able to pick out some of the voices from this Transformers work). The only saving grace is that it was meant for markets where English was a lingua franca and not the primary spoken language so it probably got less flak. And Hasbro has pretty much disowned and denied its very existence. To the point that official western DVDs of the shows explicitly chose not to carry the dub because they found it embarrassing (I bought some bootlegs from Malaysia so I could have copies of it)

Seriously:

and if you want to subject yourself to the entire series (be aware: dub comedy aside this is a bad show.):

That's cool. I was on the pre-order waiting list for a similar thing called the Analogue Pocket a couple years ago. It was supposed to be handheld specific and play basically anything up to and including the Game Boy Advance (so basically all the iterations of the Game Boy, plus Sega Game Gear and I think handhelds from NeoGeo and Turbografix or something like that) but then they started doing pre-orders and it turned out the price would've been like $400 plus shipping. Nooooo thank you.

I do find it funny that so many nostalgia-inspired game consoles go for the 4-colors-of-buttons that mimics the Super Famicom even though that was never a thing in the west since the SNES did two-tone blue buttons with tactile differences (convex/concave button tops)

I've thought about getting a Retron console though to play most of my older games on a TV. It has cartridge slots and everything so I don't have to deal with emulation or ROMs or whatever.

Apparently a Retrotink 4k is in development although it's going to be significantly more expensive than a 5x

Nice. It kind of reminds me of a gameboy micro which I always wanted for some reason. On a related note, I hear they are starting to process the pre-orders for the steam deck but I haven't heard from them yet.

Hah, yeah they are the classic amiibos. In storage, I think I have Dedede, Palutena, and Ike. I also have one partially made Unicorn Gundam figure. I went all out and even bought those model tool kits, but stopped halfway. Just have some half-built torso somewhere in storage

Definitely enjoyed watching Beast Wars on TV as a kid too. I downloaded all the episodes and rewatched them in middle school, but might be due for another rewatch. My memory of the series kinda fades after they become transmetal. For the toys, I have a ton of the original and transmetal versions in my tuff shed. They're all super beat up and scratched now though, especially the transmetal ones. Even bought the remade Rhinox and Rattrap from like 8-10 years ago (where RatTrap is actually pretty big). If I were to buy more Beast Wars, I think my next purchase would probably be the War for Cybertron Rhinox just to complete the OG 4 Maximals, even though I know you said his transformation is balls. Either that or Waspinator just cuz I think he looks pretty cool.

I'm still waiting on news for my Q3 preorder for a steam deck. Sounds like the Q1 and Q2 people already have theirs. I've heard good things so far in terms of steam games + retro game emulation.

Awesome. I got a couple early on (Smash Mega Man, Bowser) and then I sort of dipped in and out. I have the pixel marios (both colors) and Link, Ocarina of Time version Link, Mega Man 9 pack-in Mega Man, all 3 colors of yarn yoshi (but not the big one, which I really wanted), yarn poochie, the wedding garb Mario Odyssey trio (Mario, Peach, Bowser), the Metroid Samus Returns 2-pack (Samus and a Metroid) and then most recently I got the Skyward Sword Zelda/Loftwing and the Metroid Dread 2-pack.

back at the beginning I wanted Smash Lucina really badly but could never find it. In hindsight I might've dodged a bullet because a lot of the pictures I've seen look like she's got a pretty derpy face.

Season 1 is kind of clunky at the beginning but once you get to season 2 it's really good. It's the best Transformers show for a balance of interesting/fun characters, action, actual drama, and bursts of comedy.

Kingdom Rhinox looks decent overall. I know other collectors have said that the "Thrilling 30" version (which I suspect is the one you bought 10 years ago) is better but I wasn't collecting at the time and this one is decent enough except for the nightmare legs (there's like 3 panels and 4 joints all contained in the legs that you have to fold, pivot, swivel, and twist into place. I've only transformed mine twice and it's a harrowing experience each time because something gets stuck and you have to kind of force it out without breaking anything, then find just the right angle for clearance as everything moves.

Waspinator's a decent figure. He doesn't quite have the personality of the show version and I don't love the bulky bug legs that just sort of hang off the robot arms and legs but there a lot of nice detail.

You might need to move quickly on Rhinox though. In spite of seeing a lot of them at the end of last year I haven't seen them around as much in the last couple of months. It might get harder to find one now as stock seems to be dwindling and all that's left are scalpers or the ever-untrustworthy ebay auctions that might be selling you Chinese bootlegs. There appears to be one copy left on the Canadian Amazon (amazon.ca) for $47cdn, which is fair-ish for a Voyager-tier figure but I haven't seen anything else out there. I will reiterate that Tigatron at $24 US is a fantastic buy though. That one is a bigger, better, bulkier Cheetor without the awful QC on the cat head/neck (I accidentally sheared the tab that holds the cat head in place in beast mode off on my first transformation because the fit was so tight) and the metallic minty green/white colors look really nice.

Right now I'm waiting on this year's Hasbro crowd-funded Transformers offering, which is the lead/Autobot commander from the 80s Japan-only anime series Transformers Victory: Star Saber. Or, as I tend to jokingly call him, Gundamus Prime.

mxzbm54yxvq71.jpg

It was slightly less expensive than last year's crowdfunding offering, the 2.5 feet tall Unicron that weighed like 20 lbs and cost over $800 plus extra costly shipping because of the whole "it weighs 20 lbs" part. That was a bit too rich for my blood.
