Something silly and a bit self-interested for the uber-nerds out there, especially @WTFetus since I know he bought some of the recently released modern Transformers: Beast Wars figures in the last few years and might appreciate how much of my disposable income I spend on toy robots instead of something cheaper like, say.... crack. The up-to-date progression of my BW collection over the last 6 or so years:

(excuse the terrible picture quality of my potato of a phone.)

It's not the full cartoon cast yet (Silverbolt is due out next year and there's still 2-4 characters that have no word on getting updated figures yet) but it is whole first season cast. Plus a couple from a Japan-exclusive anime filler show they made in between dubbing the main show's 1st and 2nd/3rd seasons.

At yesterday's Children & Family arm of the academy of television arts and sciences awards, a lifetime achievement emmy was presented to Peter Cullen, voice actor most recognized as one of the longest serving voices of Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh works, Monterey Jack in Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider, the noises of the Predator in the original film, Vengar from the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon of the 80s, and literally dozens and dozens of other roles including as a cast member of the Sonny & Cher show and as the announcer for the Smothers Brothers' series.

But of course, as you might expect given that I'm writing this, he is most recognizable and remembered as the voice of Optimus Prime in a large swath of Transformers media from the original 1984 cartoon all the way through to the current live action movies. A voice and characterization he based largely on his brother, a former marine. I'd say more but he tells the story within a video package and his speech in the show footage below.

Fittingly, the award was presented to him by fellow lifetime achievement award winner, voice acting god, and Optimus Prime's eternal nemesis Megatron, Frank Welker. And holy crap does his normal voice basically just sound like Freddie from Scooby Doo (Because he is the original and most prolific Freddie. He's also Scooby sometimes now too)

Since images are kind of borked and it's 2AM I'm going to dispense with the usual structure and prattle and just say that after a couple of months of being extremely busy and having a few computer issues, here is the very belated December classic radio post:

With 2 days to go before Christmas it would seem only fitting that aside from the omnipresent Star Wars shows, the only other thing in the radio folder is a collection of classic Christmas-themed programs that can literally last you two whole days (it's over 100 programs and clocks in at like 15 minutes short of 50 hours).

Sorted into 5 "discs" (by tags, not within sub-folders) the collection is by no means an exhaustive assortment of holiday programs but it covers some of the most prominent shows of the time/that I had easy access to and is divided up more or less by genre.

Disc 1 is a quartet of dramatic adaptations, featuring two years of The Mercury Theatre starring Orson Welles adapting A Christmas Carol. The 1938 performance has Welles in the lead as Scrooge while in the 1939 version he cedes the role to Lionel Barrymore, who had a long history of portraying Scrooge on radio before eventually being cast as the villainous Mr. Potter in It's a Wonderful Life. And speaking of, the other two programs on this disc are Lux Radio Theatre adaptations of popular Christmas films, the first being It's a Wonderful Life starring James Stewart and Donna Reed reprising their roles from the movie. The second Lux offering is a condensed version of Miracle on 34th Street again retaining two primary cast members in Maureen O'Hara (the film's lead, Doris Walker) and Edmund Gwenn (Kris Kringle)

Disc 2 offers the bulk of the collection, over half of all shows contained in this release, and comprises the comedy and variety portion of the set. You've got shows from an array of series including The Jack Benny Program, Abbott & Costello, Burns & Allen, the various Fred Allen series, an episode of Bing Crosby's variety series, Fibber and Molly McGee, and a few more. Burns & Allen and Jack Benny especially had long runs with yearly Christmas episodes and make up the most significant chunk of the disc but they're generally top notch quality.

Disc 3 shifts gears to detectives, mystery shows, and dramas as The Saint, Nick Carter, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, Gunsmoke, Dragnet and others get in on the action with holiday capers.

Disc 4 is some yuletide mystery and suspense with The Shadow, Suspense, The Whistler, and more providing a bit of creepy fun with a Christmas edge

and Disc 5 finishes up with some modern public domain offerings from BBC Radio: A 10-part dramatic reading of A Christmas Carol, a 4 part full-cast adaptation of The Nutcracker & The Mouse King, which was later adapted into the famous Tchaikovsky ballet (via an adaptation of the story by Alexandre Dumas), and a 5 part anthology of tales themed around Twas The Night Before Christmas. They're a little odd in a set of mostly vintage American shows, but they were there for the taking and I figured might have some interest.

If the drive link above isn't working by the morning let me know and I'll check into it. I had some issues getting the old files deleted and new ones synced properly so I'm not 100% if everything worked.

Given the timing of everything I also can't promise a timely January release of shows as I've fallen way behind on cataloging my collection but we'll see how things proceed from here.

Was watching the Canada/USA WJC pre-tournament game this morning and kept seeing ads for the movie "The Iron Claw" with the High School Musical guy. Couldn't figure out what sort of pro wrestling content would end up being made into a movie that's getting sold to a mainstream audience so I looked it up and it's about the von Erich family from Texas. But that's where this gets weird.

The ad was all upbeat and uplifting and about how the narrating guy just wanted to be with his brothers and be a good person/have a good life and it sounds like this rah-rah affirmation of the power of positive living and hopes/dreams stuff. You know, sort of like a typical sports movie. Except there's no way they can make a movie about the von Erichs without it being the most horrifically bleak and depressing thing imaginable. Some people who aren't up on wrestling history are going to end up watching that and will get blindsided.

Belated Christmas and Holiday wishes to everyone here. Hope you all had a great day celebrating unadulterated materialism and food comas and all that good stuff
I really do hate Amazon more with each passing year

I miss just gifting people whatever I happened to find when rummaging through JC Penny, Mervyns or Sears

No one is stopping you from rummaging! Except maybe the fact those stores no longer exist... There's always the flea market. Starts up again in April through November. I guess the word "always" doesn't apply there. You could uh... hand make your gifts. Not sure where you'd get materials since Hobby Lobby is closed tho. I guess you could get them from Amazon. :biglaugh:

Mervyns was acquired by Target, those still exist. JC Penney still exists, sort of. Swap out Wal*Mart for Sears...

I got a rock tumbler for Christmas so next year I'm giving everyone polished stones. They don't need to know that it's all gravel from my driveway and back yard. It'll be inexpensive and hand made!

If you're into watching poker and also enjoy or at least tolerate reality competitions, and you haven't seen this yet, watch Game of Gold available for free on YouTube. I don't wanna give anything away, but it's a great concept and pretty well-executed.

RIP
Watched reruns. Funny. "Mom loved you best"

f*** that's a beauty. ESP really does the modern LP thing right.

I sure hope so! It'll be interesting to hear how the Fishman alnico and ceramic actives compare to the EMG81s that Kruspe models originally had. I have an all 81 axe and an 85/81 combo, so I figured this could be a fun mix.

Also am building a bedroom stack out of a Jet City 1x12 box and a yet-to-be-selected mini tube. Already have a v30 on the way to replace the JC eminence driver. Any thoughts on the Mesa Mini? I heard the 20w tube market has a ton of gems but I don't know where to start.

Fishman seems to be the way to go re: active pickups these days but I haven't gotten much into that market since I've stuck with passives for guitar.

Oh hell yea nice, I'm a big V30 guy as well. The Mini Rec is super cool but it's definitely got less low end than the higher watt models. Would probably be the best option if you're trying to do the Rammstein thing in a small form factor though.

Mesa also put out the Badlander recently with a few different options for wattage, but it only runs EL34s and it's quite pricey. I know Marshall put out a 20W JCM somewhat recently but I haven't heard those.

Oh, those are two that I haven't looked at. Thanks! I'm also going to check out a Revv G20 when I get a chance. Heard a lot of good things about it and the D20.

Basically what happened is I had to move my Dual Rec stack to the garage because it's a bit too loud for toddler ears. I moved all my pedals down there as well. I'm looking for some really crunchy sounds without having to turn the volume up too much. I know I can probably just get a pedal for the 20w stack, but I wanted to keep it clean if possible. If I can get some scooped Metallica-ish sounds out of it, that works for me. I must play Ramm loud so it's always going to be in the garage

After the holiday well-wishes I forgot the obvious follow-up: To ask if anyone got any cool gifts, Sharks-related or otherwise.

I got a Meta Quest 3, chonies, my favorite deodorant and socks. The latter I asked for, the Quest was a big surprise from my wife (we got a matching set for game dates).

The real fun was watching kiddo's first "real" Xmas (where he understands it all). I could barely keep up with him as he sprinted from his bedroom to the living room. Almost busted my arse down the stairs, heh.

I got tickets to Thursday's game against the Jets. Granted, I paid for them, but they're also kind of a gift to myself and my fiance.

Otherwise a collection of books. Sharks may or may not be involved - one covers American diplomatic policy in the Pacific during the Theodore Roosevelt administration.
