I can get us back on topic:
My favorite Greek restaurant in town here died some time in the last few months without me noticing. Now where am I going to go for a good gyro? Also that was my go-to birthday dinner.
What's worse is that it was replaced by a Thai place. Because it's not like there was a Thai place across the street from there for a couple years which imploded before the pandemic because it never attracted any business....
It feels like people keep trying to start the same type of constantly failing restaurants over and over and over again while the more unique ones that are actually good never get replacements if they close. I swear to god if the pasta place here closes down I'll probably never eat out again except for "gonna grab a burger because I ain't got time to go home and cook something" situations.
Dang! I hate when a place I like closes. Bunch of shuttered store fronts and restaurants in SF, but it was kinda happening prior to the pandemic, just to a lesser degree.
I think the Irish bakery (John Campbells) closing stung the most for me. So nice to go grab a sheppards pie and bring it home and bake it up. Their sausage rolls were so flaky and yet a bit greasy and perfect.
There was a pretty good sandwich joint (Hidden Spot) that closed also, they had the best bread and their cheese steaks were perfectly ratioed, so f***ing good. They did this chopped chicken hot sando that was better than any buffalo wing I've ever eaten.
Oh and the sushi boat place (Sakana Bune) a few blocks away closed, it was really good, but there was always two, tall, embarassing stacks of empty, tiny plates in front of me and while the bill was reasonable I felt like the boat situation lead me to maybe eat a bit more sushi than I really wanted to in a sitting. Even without the boat/buffet situation I over eat sushi because it's so good and I don't get sushi very often. Fun place to bring friends, but due to my gluttonous reaction to all this sushi that just keeps coming around on the little boats I really enjoyed going there alone. My guilty pleasure.
The korean bbq on my block just closed recently. I liked that place, their meat was always sliced nicely and it's fun to cook on skewers like you're camping but you're actually inside a restaurant. Was a great place to bring friends that were visiting.
Daigo Sushi closed also, which is truly a loss to the community. They made this Tokyo Cowboy Roll which was shitake and fillet mignon as a roll with some scallions and they had this sauce on the side which just made the whole thing pop. It was like au jus but not exactly au jus. I can't descibe it but that place was just so good. There was this salmon roll they made with this paper thin slice of Meyer Lemon on it that was also incredibly good.
It's sad to watch all these places go. What's worse than that is the fact they seem to be staying vacant.
