Rangers lose=Rangers played bad.

Rangers win=Rangers played well

Do you folks realize there is an opponent on the ice?

The sooner fans realize this, the better they'll sleep at night. The Rangers aren't a bunch of special snowflakes in that, if they show up and play their game, they will win every single time. Doesn't matter what your squirt coach once told you. And those mistakes you see, they don't always happen in a vacuum. There are pros on the other side inducing those mistakes.

This thread is going to replace the Post Game Thread. As far as your last question, I don't know. I do know that we're trying to discourage page after page of "XYZ Sucks!", "Trade ABC!" after a given loss. It made this place completely unvisitable after games last year for a lot of posters. So you can spill your guts as long as you don't use the thread as your personal stress ball. You can buy those at CVS.

Thanks. http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-detail/CVS-Stress-Ball?skuId=463228
Must say it's FREAKING ME OUT that they can't put the price at en even 7. C'mon.

I think it's a bad idea to remove the PGT stress outlet it's coming here instead.

I wasn't able to really watch and was hoping for someone to discuss the game and analyze things like beacon does for the AHL games but I only saw a few posts like that. Mostly it was just "A was good. B was bad." No discussion of why. Things like "Zucc couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat" would be funny and great in a GDT or PGT but I was under the impression this place would be more about discussing the play that led to him getting such a great opportunity.

The passive aggressive sniping and sarcasm I thought were supposed to be regular PGT/GDT fodder and I think we should keep the PGT for that especially if it's being left in here. Similarly closing the GDT during intermission doesn't encourage clever analysis to come here it only forces unfiltered frustration to the only outlet available. My two cents reading everything but making this the only outlet isn't going to work.

Much of the sloppiness and scrambling will iron itself out. Our breakout is improved and our defense joining in
Was good to see. After 20-25g we'll get a clearer picture. ..

A little surprised at the lack of poise in McD and Girardi... the latter makes far too many blunders.

MDZ still looks overwhelmed

We lack scoring finish. We need another pure scorer. The guys we have with the opportunity on their sticks can't get it done.

Nash had better find his all world talent quickly.... he's looking far too comfortable just being "good"

My take. Yes they are sloppy in the defensive zone, they need to maybe rethink the aggressive strategy in their own zone. Offensively I thought it was OK, Smith outplayed Henrik, made some very good saves early, Zucc with a crossbar hurt too. I actually think Richards looked OK for once and I have been his worst critic.
Still think this 9 game road trip will kill the season for us because against all legit teams, so games like this will get us 1-8 trip anyway. So they better figure out something quick, even if it means going to a hybrid Torts strategy in the defensive zone for now.

Staal was our best overall player. He is fully recovered and ready to go as far as I can tell. Richards who I've put down with regularity for quite a while was our best forward last night. He actually looked like he was on the ball.

We did not play very well. Phoenix outhustled us most of the night. We made some bad plays. Henrik mishandled the puck which led to a goal. Del Zotto and Nash teamed up to mishandle a puck on Vrbata's hat trick goal--either could have had an assist. Rangers continued to be overwhelmed after killing off penalties leading to two goals because we could not get our guys off the ice.

Fell asleep after the second. Watched the third before work this AM. Glad I didn't eat first. Nice compete level.

That said fair expectations for this trip were .500 hockey. Saw some good things too you can see what AV wants the team to do.

Gotta love seeing Staal score, and generally be in beast mode. That made my night, have to feel good for the guy. Zucc played very well too.

Stepan really showed the rust. Frustrating but not surprising. Del Zotto is also so frustrating to me. He will make good plays (especially jumping up a few times to create chances) and then some peewee level plays. On the first goal - how does he wind up behind the net, much less chasing a player around to behind the left side of the net? That shows 0 thought. Goal was not on him, but the decision blows my mind.

Yeah Richards had a good game, some good looks and passes. Nash and Stepan were just kinda slow...good job finding things on the goal but I'd like to see more drive from Nash.

I can't agree that they didn't hustle really...I thought they outplayed Phoenix until about the second penalty and then Phoenix went into lockdown and the Rangers just couldn't really get it going. I'm annoyed that some of the same problems are still sticking around (sloppy defensive zone play, and all the mistakes ending up in the net, Lundqvist not quite on his game even though I can't pin this one on him, and the lack of finish) but there's stuff I like too.

One thing I don't like is this schedule to start the season, what a mess

OK, purely from watching the game last night:

Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello seems like the only line capable of creating scoring chances. The top line had a few but seemed to struggle throughout. The bottom-6 just seemed, there... They had the puck in the OZ at times but nothing really happened.

Staal showed some good offensive instincts, was forced to switch sides mid-game with MDZ since Michael obviously cannot play to the right. MDZ was a mixed bag with some nice offensive moves but then his passes were picked off and the play went the other way. Girardi was better than in pre-season broke up a few nice plays and saved a breakaway, but still cannot be trusted to complete a pass longer than the distance between the circle and the blue-line. Seeing him attempt cross-ice passes on the PP (which he shouldn't even be on) made me cringe. McDonagh was just invisible throughout, it was like he never returned from that puck to the face. I felt Strålman had a good game, but that might be biases clouding my judgement. But he was never really on for chances against and usually involved in chances for, plus his breakouts were as good as always. Moore I don't know, didn't like his game TBH. The pass for the first goal went between him and the net, it is obvious he only played a few months for Torts as that was basically the biggest no-no. Made some bad decisions that got him into trouble, trying to rely on his skating instead of just passing the puck.

Hank. Terrible save percentage, but I didn't feel that any of the goals were particularly soft. Blatant interference on the 2nd goal.

The PP looked good when they managed to set up with control. Though there were times when they were struggling to enter the zone.

The PK looked bad, really bad.

Looking at the stat sheet:

Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello wasn't as effective as I thought, having roughly the same possession numbers as the top line. But I still feel like they did create higher quality scoring chances. Pyatt-Boyle-Fast actually dominated their opposition somehow, spending a lot more time in the offensive zone than the defensive. But they never really did anything with it. D. Moore and Miller got buried, absolutely buried. That can't continue or we'll have a liability of a 4th line once again.

On D, Strålman did have a good game significantly out possessing and out chancing the opposition. Del Zotto (barely) managed more on-ice shot attempts than the opposition, but they all got blocked or missed and was dominated in shots on goal. Staal's numbers were similar, but slightly worse than MDZ's. Girardi, Moore, and especially McDonagh got buried 5v5. I'd explain away G-Mac's numbers a bit in that they got caught on that long change after the PK that resulted in the 2-1 goal, but still not encouraging. J. Moore is interesting because he played all of the 2nd and 3rd periods with Strålman, yet Strålman ended up at the top and he at the bottom of the chart. The discrepancy must have been achieved in the first where they jumbled the pairings and in those short moments where the changing of the D gets out of sync. So as soon as Moore got away from Strålman he was immediately buried.

Last night I felt like I was watching a carbon copy of the early Torts years, when he attempted to push the action and the team fell on it's collective face with continued offensive struggles and the added bonus of increased defensive breakdowns. Yet, I come here and its the same old small time thinking, blaming guys like Boyle and Pyatt, like its their fault.

The problem is, year after year, Sather creates some sort of sketchy mandate of how he wants the team to play, and continues to hand the coach a roster full of holes.

Rick Nash fighting is what happens when Derek Dorsett is the toughest guy on the team. I love that he fought, but that's not something he should have to do.

Also, 100% agreed with this. I mean it's nice to see signs of a pulse from Nash but him fighting really is not what you want.

we lack speed and offensive skill. period.

we looked a step slow. too many plodding players. no one backs anyone up.

del zotto continues to be a mess. hes best suited for 3d pair duty.

zuc had a good game. hes got subtle skill and his puck plays and overall awareness is very good.

beev had a decent game actually.

hank...not so much

I won't panic until after 5 games. Last night was just a poor showing...they did not sustain any significant pressure and it seemed like every few seconds PHX would turn it around and get an odd-man rush.

To Smith's credit that guy can move the puck holy crap!

watched the 1st period. Missed the 2nd and 3rd.

I liked the speed on the transition game. I though the PP looked hell of alot better.

Still no finishers on the team which is going to be a problem.

after the 1st, it could have been 2-1 or 3-1 Rangers that's how well I thought they played with a few spots here and there.

In the words of Ricky Riccardo

"WHA HAPPEN?'

Hey man I don't know if you know this but, this is a message board for regular fans of all ages and not a super team of hockey analysts. Not every single post is going to be a in-depth breakdown of X amount of TOI for every player. If you are looking for that, there are various media outlets that cover the team extensively. If that's still not sufficient you could do what everyone else here does and watch the game. Then maybe you wouldn't need every play spelled out for you.

This team will be better when Hags and Cally fill the lineup.

Saw some good things in their game, they created some chances and held possession for good stretches. But im concerned about their finishing ability.

The Brassard line was good, but again concerned about finishing. They had some nice chances though and Smith stoned them on that one. Pouliot has some skill but he makes some really boneheaded plays out there, AV s going to have to work with him on making smarter plays with the puck or else he should be dropped in the lineup.

Richards looks alright. More decisive yes but he was floating a little bit and I thought he needed to be a little more engaged, especially on the backcheck. That line got better as the game went on I thought. Stepan obviously needs to shake off the rust. Nash looked like he was pushing it which is a good sign but he needs more shots.

I hated the Pyatt Boyle line. Boyle did some good things but hes Boyle. He really needs to be on what will be a solid 4th with Moore (liked what I saw) and Dorsett. I dont know why AV kept going back to them as much as he did. Fast did some nice things but he needs to play with more skilled players IMO.

I liked Millers game and I like the idea of planting him in front on the PP. He likes to get his nose dirty.

I expected this type of game again from the Rangers, but I really wanted this one - a lot more than season openers in the past. Because the schedule is so rough and the preseason losses were piling up I thought it would be really good for the morale to pull out a win in Game 1. You can even tell with AVs comments and body language that he knows this team isnt anywhere near where they need to be and is indirectly giving excuses saying "I expect them to get better" often in his interviews.

Transition time is to be expected (I feel like we say that at the start of every year the way Slats turns key parts of the team over every year) but what is acceptable on this road trip? What is realistic? Yes, it is just one game... but you gotta be careful when having losses and bad play become "acceptable"... especially since they had so many in preseason.

Am I the only one who thought we played like **** last night? Henrik looked awful. We were trapped in our zone for long periods of time. Phoenix's aggressive forecheck kept the pressure on us and we didn't do anything to adjust. Our defense looked like garbage. Im not a cynical person by any means. I just hope they get this garbage out of them now and are ready to go once they get back to MSG.

You're not the only one. That was tough to watch. I'll take a defense that stuffs the box all day over one that runs around. I saw a lot of the Rangers trying to push the pace, come up empty on the offensive end, and then wind up confused on the defensive side of the puck.

if speed and transition are key to what AV wants to do, then when Cally and Hags are back, Pyatt and Boyle need to get gone for good.

Richards - Stepan - Nash
Pouliot - Brassard - Zuccs
Hagelin - Miller - Callahan
Fast - Moore - Dorsett

Leave the top line alone and let them benefit from the chances Brass and Millers line will create. The opposition will have to make a choice on who to focus on.

It's a faster team with more skill.

The problem I have with this group is that we still do not have enough selfish players with a shoot first mentality. No finishers. the team needs finishers.

^^^^ I like that lineup but I dont' think Boyle is going anywhere yet. Probably not Pyatt either, unfortunately...I just think there are some better options in the lineup than those two for certain things

Yeah that line was just too slow and Pyatt and Boyle can't hold onto the puck well enough in the offensive zone to be used as any kind of vaguely scoring line.

What are the better options? Miller and Fast? I thought Fast was OK...did Miller even play last night? Invisible.

Some observations:

-The sloppy, disorganized play and awful PK was anticipated, but the lack of intensity until late in the 3rd was disappointing. Weak on the puck, losing board battles, did not occur to anyone to screen Smith, etc.

-Richards looked better and more involved than I expected. However, he looked good in his first preseason game and his play dipped after, so let's see if he keeps it up.

-Staal was our best player, great to see him getting involved offensively.

-It seemed like every time Girardi made a good play, it was negated by a bad play.

-Boyle and Pyatt played way too much at even strength and Pyatt should not be getting so much PK time. I'm assuming Stepan didn't PK because he is still rusty, otherwise AV has some 'splainin to do.

-It was a pleasant surprise to see Nash fight, but I wish I had seen some of that intensity from him earlier in the game. Another lackadaisical game from him for the most part.

-The PP looks better. They still need to maintain possession of the puck a little longer.

-The Rangers continue this weird pattern of actually losing momentum after scoring a goal. "Woo we scored our 1 goal quota! Let's relax now!"

-The inability to finish has been an issue for some time and I don't see this problem going away anytime soon. There were some real nice setups that failed to capitalize because of missed shots and soft wristers lobbed into Smith's logo.
