Can anyone tell me why this takes us out of the running for Eichel? A Zib-Eichel 1-2 punch at center could be great for years. Not worried about the cap - we can find a home for Kreider or Trouba in a couple years when the kids need to get paid. Part of me feels like Larry saying “this should quiet the Eichel talk” is just posturing.
Because depth matters in the playoffs.

I love when people say this because they are basing their predictions off of literally nothing. Crosby has had more concussion issues and is in less shape than Zib and is still producing at a good level. Modern Technology and Science has proven in other sports already that it can push the limit on humans. You’ll see more and more players continue to play at a high level well into their 30s

All players physically decline. It is inevitable. Players that remain productive as they physically decline are usually (a) very smart and (b) able to adjust their game to compensate for their physical decline. That’s Crosby. I think Panarin will be in the same mold. Zibanejad is much more reliant of his physical abilities than his smarts. And when he struggled for much of the past year, he did not appear to make any adjustments to his game to contribute in a different way. He played the same game in the hopes that the next one-timer wasn’t going to go wide. Eventually, it came back to him. There will be a time during this contract where the physical decline is permanent. Can he compensate? I have serious concerns based on what I’ve seen.

Fair value deal for Mika who's shown that his elite goal scoring can outpace any 5v5 possession issues he's had in recent years. Another thing people are probably ignoring is that with a better system and more support around him, his 5v5 numbers will be closer to what they were a few years ago, especially now that he won't have to get back in shape on-the-fly after having covid right before the season starts.

The tail end of the deal probably is ugly, but I've stopped caring about that since teams have shown time and time again that these deals are more movable than we think. We needed to lock in a long-term piece as 1C for the next 4-5 years, and that's what we did. I still would've opted for a younger long-term option, but there's nothing really out there that's within reason.

WOW!

great deal/value. 8 years is meh, hopefully with 5 years NMC. Now do Fox and take a gamble on Kakko ( if he would )

This will be amazing value in 3-4 years. Zibs will be fine into his early 30's.

People keep saying Zibanejad won't age gracefully, but I see no reason to think he will not be productive throughout the deal.

He has a fantastic shot, top tier in the league. That shot doesn't dissappear. So it'll be a weapon through the deal.

He also currently plays pretty heavy. If he is losing a step, cut some weight. He takes very good care of himself.

Concussion issues are overblown. When was his last one? Remember when some guy wearing 87 had those? Can't remember when he got one last.

We're talking about one of the top centers in the game. This isn't when they signed Stepan or when they were looking at Hayes signing. This is a different level of player.

I think he actually already lightened up and isn't playing as heavy.
Concussions aren't something you can really guess on how they'll affect a player so who knows. That said, you can't know the future and have to make deals with what you have
