Makes sense. It is definitely a steep price to pay, as I am sure teams will get impact players all through the top 40 of this draft (and beyond). But I think Murphy would be an awesome addition.

What's your view of Murphy? Health, ability, projection, etc. I'd be lying if I said I've watched much of the Hawks these last few years, but my impression of Murph has always been really positive.
Good 2nd pairing D, very little offence, good chance he's going to miss a chunk of season. Tanev-lite

Flyers probably make this type of deal closer to the TDL when teams are more desperate for cap space.

Ottawa is not giving up a 1st rounder in a deep draft for Zaitsev who has 2 years left before UFA. Sens don't need the cap space that desperately.

Come on man....can't you just let Fletcher make ONE good deal in his FOUR effing long painful agonizing years as our worst GM ever? Just one?

Flyers are swimming in LTIR, and I can't imagine they have any pretenses of winning this year. Might be nice to get a warm body ahead of York so he's not getting reamed by the best opposition players every night. No Couts will make for some lopsided possession.

Zaitsev has 2 years left at 4.5m. He's a bottom pairing defenceman on a most teams, maybe a 7-8 on a good team. The 1st would be a gamble - how much higher will OTT finish this year? Or will they unexpectedly finish in the lottery again?

Ottawa gets:
PTBNL

Philly gets:
Zaitsev
Ottawa's 1st 2023
No idea who PTBNL is, and no to proposal with a first.

That seems like a really steep price for Ottawa to pay, just to unload a guy who is at least still an NHL caliber RHD. Substantially overpriced, yes...but if Ottawa were giving up that kind of price to get rid of him, i'd hope that there's an actual reason. Something they're deliberately trying to make cap space for. If there's not a follow-on move lined up behind this, i don't really see the point for the Sens. Making cap space just for the sake of cap space doesn't really help them win games. Not any more than just having Zaitsev does. Underwhelming as he may be.

Zero chance the Sens give up a 1st to dump Zaitsev. He only makes 2.5M in salary the rest of this year, which makes him only a million or so overpaid.

Should cost a 2nd + mid-pick to dump the last year of his contract in the summer. No need for the Sens to dump him now unless it's in a deal for Chychrun or a different top 4 D, in which case Zaitsev would likely be going the other way in the deal.

Didn't the Sens give up their 2023 first dumping Murray, an even bigger contract?

What, a 3rd? You don't say.

With 2 years remaining it would easily cost a 1st. And for that reason, he won’t be traded.

Zaitsev is a capdump plain and simple.

Done deal from this end. Hawks wouldn't do it with Form + Zaits, as the 1st just holds too much value to them, even top-10 protected.
Ottawa probably takes that pretty easily, unless our professional scouts hate Murphy - but we know our professional scouts aren't the best....

What it would cost and what they're willing to pay are different though. Ottawa doesn't need to mortgage a 1st in a deep draft for 2.5M in real dollars, when they can pay that 2.5M and spend just a 2nd + to unload him in 8 months, or 2nd alone in 10 months (and pay another 2.5M).

The team values a 1st round pick more than 2.5M, I'm sure.

Zaitsev dump proposals need to consider
- Ottawa’s abundance of cap space in 2022-23
- the bonus already paid to Zaitsev ($2m)
- Zaitsev’s 10 team NTC
- Cap cost of buyout with 1 year left
* $3.6m cash with
* cap hit for 2023-24 @ $2.8m
* cap hit for 2024-25 @ $833k

Any trade now needs to be to make space for an immediate upgrade, or to bring that $2.8m buyout number down in 2023-24 (ideally both).

Say Ottawa want to acquire a D from a team on Zaitsev’s NTC list, and therefore need the cap space - they could involve a third party team (e.g. Philly) in a deal. They can’t attach a first rounder though, because they will need that for acquiring the other guy.

Something like this would be consistent with market value for other cap dump trades, and would work for Ottawa financially:

To third party: Zaitsev (22% retained) + 2nd + 3rd.

Result here (versus a buyout next Summer) is that Ottawa pays 2nd + 3rd for …
- a $3.5m cap saving in 2022-23
- a $1.8m cap saving in 2023-24
- an $800k cap saving in 2024-25
- a saving of ~$1.9m in real dollars

Acquiring team pays Zaitsev ~$5m over 2 seasons, at a cap hit of $3.5m AAv.
