Klein + 3rd for Zaitsev
Lol.

Rangers are a bad fit for this... only McDonagh makes some sense for our rebuild and probably only if his contract had more term. We need a top 4 or top pairing D under 30 who will still be here in 4 years. Because that's likely what Zaitsev is, and in this scenario it's Toronto that has the leverage.

Zaitsev doesn't need to be protected and has been our 2nd best D. He is not going to get a better dman then himself so why do this, trade other pieces for a dman to protect is a good plan from a team that will struggle to keep all theirs. Then we would have Rielly, Gardiner, Zaitsev and the traded for dman who we protect we come out with a real top 4 d core

Leafs fans haven't seen too many good dmen so i dont blame you guys for thinking that Zaitsev is currently a "#3 with top pairing potential".

so far this season:

http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/z/zaitsni01-advanced-5on5.html
-2.3 CF rel% // -3.3 FF rel%

his partner Morgan Rielly:

http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/r/riellmo01-advanced-5on5.html
2.3 CF rel% // 2.3 FF rel%

Rielly and Zaitsev CF % together = 48.3%
Rielly CF % when apart from Zaitsev = 54.5%

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/showplayer.php?pid=1820&withagainst=true&season=2016-17&sit=5v5

Nice sell job but the numbers say otherwise, Zaitsev hasn't been very efficient so far and he's been a boat anchor for Rielly. You can't really dismiss me for being biased when i'm presenting you with facts, also i've defended guys like Kadri in other threads aswell.

Because the pieces Leafs fans want to trade do not add up or do not make sense for Minnesota to trade Brodin or Dumba.

Lol.

leafs not paying to get those guys.
McD costs a LOT more

-------------
Stepan + Klein
for
JVR + Zaitsev

not sure he would waive, but if he did, could extend that to include Marc Staal and Lupul

Toronto improves, Klein is inexpensive and decent chance to renew for decent $, but could also be moved. Stepan obv is the main piece, and is long term

Rangers get JVR which is not better at C depth, but we can work with that, price of getting an ELC protected D

A lot of people seem to not understand what the OP means.

I'll try to help with as simple as I can example:

Ducks:
Vatanen

for

Leafs:
Zaitsev

* This assumes Leafs value Vatanen > Zaitsev, which may not necessarily be true.

Ducks currently, if protecting 4D would have to choose:

Bieksa (NM) * Ignore waive/buyout for example
Fowler
Lindholm
Manson
Vatanen

OP is suggesting they trade a higher value D (Vatanen) for Zaitsev in order to then not lose a Top-4 D to expansion.

Ducks would then protect:

Bieksa (NM)
Fowler
Lindholm
Manson

And, have Zaitsev as a Top-4 D who is exempt.

I'd like to think this clarifies as example what OP means to any confused.

This guy is a very rookie RHD just breaking into the league, already a #4/5 or better, who doesn't need to be protected in the expansion draft.

Leafs plan to protect 7 forwards and 3 dmen... Rielly, Gardiner, and a 3rd dman (none of our other guys are legit top4). There are several teams with 4 (or 5) D they'd like to protect, but only room to protect 3 (or 4).

SO. Which teams might be intetested to make a trade involving a top 4 defenseman and Nikita Zaitsev? I'm not sure Lamiorello would do it, but with the state of our blueline, he will definitely be at least listening.

Then Leafs protect 7 forwards, a goalie, and 3 D (Rielly + Gardiner + guy from Zaitsev trade).

Any interest? I have to imagine SOMEONE has at least a little interest in a still-developing #4 who is expansion exempt.

The dumbest thing I have ever read on here.

I dont understand what youre trying to acomplish here. Zaitsev is draft exempt.
Trying to see if we can use a market fluctuation to our advantage. All of a sudden, one of our D is going to go way up in value for a short while.

At the same time, we are one of the few teams without 3 really good D that need to be protected...which means we are one of the few teams who can add a quality defenseman AND protect that defenseman. In a market where more D could be available than usual and for cheaper.

If nobody overpays for Zaitsev, we simply don't trade. Some teams may be in a position to overpay though, due to expansion.
