Question? I thought with young players that Yzerman could simply walk away from the deal after 2 years and pay a fraction of the $2.8. Anyone know how that affects the cap hit?
That's called a buyout and he could do that with literally any player.

It's not related to the actual cash played at all. The thing you may be conflating here is what happens after year 3. This makes Zadina's qualifying offer in the season after year 3 based off of the 2.8. It's why players take low AAV deals like this in backloaded contracts, because the next qualifying offer MUST be at or greater than the last contract.

My mistake. As usual I didn't explain myself. I was thinking of the Kotkaniemi contract and Zadina buy out cap hit for 2024-2025 listed on Capfriendly at -$600 833. It's like trying to follow the conditions on the Calgary to Montreal first rounder.

It's not like that at all. The math is actually pretty straightforward.

To summarize what the above is saying...

Buy out Zadina year 1 and the charge is 304k for 6 years to equal 1.825 which is 1/3rd of the total contract value.
You then are then freed up from the salary for each year. Add 304k to each year.

So, year 1, he has an actual salary of 915k but a cap hit of 1.825m. His AAV is 910k more than his actual salary, so when you're relieved of his 2022-2023 salary, you're still on the hook for that 910k in cap hit. Plus, you add the 304k buyout cost, so the relative cap hit for him would be 1.214m in 2022-2023

Year 2, Actual salary 1.83m, AAV 1.825m AAV is 5k less than his actual salary. When you're relieved of the 1.83m in actual cash salary, you get a cap benefit of 5,000 for 2023-2024. However, you have the buyout cost of 304k. Cap hit in 2023-2024 is 299k.

Year 3, actual salary 2.73m, AAV 1.825m. AAV is 905k less than his actual salary. When you're relieved of the 2.73m in actual cash salary, you get a benefit of 905k. However, there still is the buyout cost of 304k that applies. So, you end up with a cap benefit of 905k - 304k or the negative 600,833 that you see.

Years 4-6, Zadina's salary is completely gone, but you've got 304k in buyout costs each year, so you have a cap hit of 304k for three more years.

Thanks. Literature is more my thing instead of math...so despite your effort it is still a head scratcher to me that we get more cap space rather than less for buying a guy out. However my original point was we can walk away from this if we want.

I'm not trying to buy him out. I was explaining the rules for if he was bought out and how in year 3 we would get a cap credit vs a cap hit.

I want him to stick around, but I also really like math and figuring stuff out.

Easy summary, we get more cap space in the last year because the buyout relates to the salary for whatever year the buyout occurs. That's why in the case of year 1, we have a greater cap hit than current salary, in year 2 where his salary is dead even with his AAV, the only charge is the buyout cost, and in year 3 when 2.73 > 1.825, we get a cap benefit. Then, we carry 304k for each of the next three years.

Buyout is based off 1/3rd of actual salary for under 26 and 2/3rds actual salary for 26+.

And no, the point I was saying is that we can't "walk away from this". It would be a buyout like what happened with Abdelkader or Nielsen or a trade to get out before the contract is done. Once the contract is done after year 3, Zadina's qualifying offer will be 105% of his year 3 salary or roughly 2.875m. At that point, we could non-tender him and walk away if we chose.

Question: At what point does he officially get renamed Bustina?
I'd give him 3 games.
I remember how I was excited when we draft him, then disappointed at development camp, but then again who am I to judge, still waiting for him to become something . If he didn't prepare off season and not showing improvement he is bastina

I generally don't follow prospects I just remember people talking a lot about his shot, which is arguably the weakest part of his game.
He has excellent shot , it's just goaltenders got much bigger lately and for him it's

hard to see where to shoot

someone who has 25 goals in 160 games does not have an excellent shot.

I mean excellent shot to include shot placement, getting it off under pressure and through traffic, not just the velocity of it.

Pulkinnen had a powerful shot but he couldn't get it off in time or on net at the NHL level.

If Zadina puts up 90 points over the next 3 years, is he worth his contract?
Well, Gagner scored 31 points last season, is he worth $2M/season?

Severe overpayment for a kid likely to bust, but at least the buyout doesn't look bad. I suppose it's worth a shot, but his main problem is that he thinks the game too slow like an offensive version of Cholo. It's not a confidence issue, it's a hockey IQ issue. I doubt he's fixable, much like how 2 other coaching staffs couldn't fix Cholo.

At least we know he'll clear waivers, I doubt any team touches this contract if he doesn't hold on to a roster spot.

Funny this buyout discussion already.

This is a contract not needed for a buyout at any case. You just waive him and keep extra 700k (burying penalty) on the books. No reason to extend caphit for extra years, even if they would be smaller. Our cap crunch will start at season 2024-25 at earliest, so we can carry many kind of extra until those days. Then all extra caphits should be clear, or it will affect for the success.

If Zadina puts up 90 points over the next 3 years, is he worth his contract?

Tried to find a comparable for his contract in 3 years and found only one.

What would Zadina be after 3 years?

Jack Roslovic is currently 3 years older than Zadina and has 1.838M caphit. He got a contract extension for 2 years after this 1.8M deal ended and will get 4M of with that.

Roslovic' last 3 years
71 games, 12+19=31 points (0.41 ppg)
48 games, 12+22=34 points (0.71 ppg)
81 games, 22+23=45 points (0.56 ppg)

Total
200 games, 46+62=108 points (0.56 ppg)

So that's kind of mediocre trending upwards Roslovic hockey prime, which Zadina would be expected to do. Zadina's last season was 0.38 ppg, and he is year away of that Roslovic 0.41 ppg season. I'm quite sure he will beat that.

This Roslovic production is kind of same, what Robby Fabbri has been with us (0.57 ppg). He also earned 4M contract after same kind of scoring as 25-year old.

Those are ok players, not waiver fodder or buyout targets. People still can't think without the draft spot of these basic numbers. If Zadina would have been drafted at 2nd round, no one would complain. But because he is 6th overall and the there's this unneeded desperation-effect how 6th overall should be always something special, discussion is horrible and misleading.
