I wonder if 2019 Red Wings draft will be equal with 1998.

1998 top pick Jiri Fischer was huge success (like Seider) and Datsyuk was the only other pick that did pan out on that draft, from 6th round (like Söderblom).

Hard to find a comparable for Zetterberg 1999 draft. All 1-2-3 picks were sold and we got him from the 7th round.

It's really interesting draft, because it was generally weak class. Kind of reminds me of 2018 Zadina class. Only Sedins as high 2-3 picks were successfull and next best was 7th round Zetterberg. Patrik Stefan busted as 1st overall and kind of all 6 rounds of forwards busted.

It figures we would get one of our rare high picks in a crap daft. I wish we would have gave up the streak and tanked earlier to hit the McDavid and Marner sweepstakes. The streak was never going to be worth the level of garbage we descended through.

Aw well silver lining we got an actual core shaping up now. Too bad Zadina didn't get his @#$%^ together.

Jiri Fischer was not a huge success. More like never hit his full stride, then got hurt as he was starting to get decent.

A team has to be really shitty to sign retreads from Detroit 2 offseasons in a row, lol. Last year it was Svech, now Zadina. I'm guessing the end result will look very similar.

Maybe he'll learn something from Hertl, at least he'll get to play practice with another Czech.

And it reduces his loss from $2.74M to $1.64M, if I was in his situation, I would have waited one year for the buyout.

"Filip wanted a fresh start," Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said in a news conference Monday. "He's able to do that. ... I tried to trade him, we put him on waivers, just couldn't move him. This is the only way to get a fresh start. I really respect him for making this decision. He's not a dumb person.

"He knows what he's given up. But his career is more important than the dollars, and I wish him well, I really do."

At least our GM is able to handle this thing in a classy way. :thumbu:

They would love to add Chiarot and get rid of Karlsson to secure that TANK.

Pipe dream, but I'd do it for Chiarot + Buium (or 2024 2nd) for Karlsson + $2.5M retention.

The team will wind up being first round fodder, but the regular season will be hella fun to watch.

In a Karlsson-trade, adding only ~5.8M more on the cap is the "magic" cap number.

It could be Määttä 3.0M + 2.8M retention of Karlsson contract to 8.7M number (25% off)
It could be Chiarot 4.5M + 1.3M retention of Karlsson contract to 10.2M number (11.3% off)
Or, no defenceman going to Sharks and 5.75M retention of Karlsson contract to 5.75M number (50% off)

That will keep us 1.7M under the cap, and both Seider and Raymond ELC bonuses 850k+850k together would be kept on this season's cap. So healthy cap for next season, after they extend. No bonus slides.

25M of cap space for 2024-25 season even after adding Karlsson with any of those trade-ideas.

The only way I make the trade is if they take Chiarot. I'd want Maatta to be his partner.

The amount hat SJ retains will depends on what else is added to the trade. $1.3M would be minimum retention, I'd still like to see $2.5M for more flexibility. Not that it matters because I don't see the trade happening.

Given the number of times you've brought this up in various threads, perhaps you should create a "Proposal: Trade for Karlsson thread?"

just sayin'
