This (see below) is the part of the conversation I was replying to. If it was about eye test vs analytics I would not have responded this way. It was an appeal to authority . I don't even disagree totally with Methot here , but the point I was making is there are a lot of smart hockey people that did not play in the NHL. Not very deep.
Fair.
Methot does talk a lot about the impact a guy like MacEwen (or Watson, Reaves, Deslauriers, etc) can have on a team though, in ways that go beyond analytics. And that is something that NHL Twitter knows way less about, and so quickly dismisses, as soon a player signs and JFresh posts one of his cards. So that's where his pushback comes from, and I tend to agree with him.
Unless you've played at a high-level, there are some things you don't know about. Many managers, who haven't played (like Dubas or Brisebois), learn those things by being around a team for years. But most fans, even the very opinionated ones on Twitter (like Luszyszyn or Wheeler) don't get that chance to be around a team. And yet they're the first ones to say that a guy like Reaves will have zero impact on the Leafs and having him on the bench will do nothing for any of their other players...
