You might not, but there are definite dog whistles when talking about Zach and his dad.
So yes, he had a very supportive dad that used money to further his career as a youth and it worked, because he's an excellent player, has amazing work ethic and overall fantastic human.

I've followed Zach Hyman's career for a long time, and he won me over long ago, but I've never heard the anti-Semitism angle before.

Hard to believe that Zach's father, Stuart Hyman, actually did this:

- Bought more than 90 GTHL minor hockey teams for around $300,000 each, including the teams that Zach and his brother played for;

- Bought the Hamilton Red Wings OJHL team that Zach and his brother played for, and that made Zach it's captain;

- Bought the ISS sports ranking agency that boosted Zach's draft ranking to 120 on its own boards after he had fallen off the draft boards on NHL Central Scouting; and,

- hob-nobbed with his buddy Larry Tanenbaum while Zach played for the Leafs.

Merely noting it, no. But it’s not hard to imagine that there are people who would combine their disdain for that kind of privilege with their preexisting biases/hate towards Jewish people.

I have seen ugly comments on this board about Bettman being Jewish (ironically from an Edmonton fan, after they were eliminated in 2023). You might be surprised at the number of fans who will casually drop hateful comments about race/religion when they assume they are among like-minded people.

Hockey isn't a sport for working class kids anymore and hasn't been for quite some time. So singling Hyman out and the level of detail to be studied on what his father purchased is a bit... odd. You can't buy your way into the NHL. Or even if you could in like a one game callup fashion, you'd never manage to stick if your play didn't warrant it.

I had essentially the same experience however many decades ago, funny enough I talked about it with family just this week! The details were a little different ($20 apiece for two goals, mostly brought on because I lived on defense year after year (would rather shut out a team than win by a lot if it included allowing a goal)). Went right back to defense afterward, but I think everyone came out pleased.

It has to be such a burden. When I played in juniors in a small town, my dad's firm was a sponsor of the local team. He bought an ad on the jersey, so everyone knew he was a sponsor. One year when I was selected to play with the older players as an underager there were constant rumors that my dad had paid for my spot. The bullying was relentless and I never heard the end of it.

I'm sure Zach has had to play with a chip on his should for his whole career. Even now when he has proven doubters wrong he still has to hear about how he doesn't deserve to be where his is. No wonder he's such a hard worker.
