Zach Hyman...

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'm sure not many (if anyone at all) expected him to score 54 goals again this year, but his steep decline in goal scoring has to be considered surprising.

Having watched quite a lot of his games this year, he hasn't looked as confident and he seemed to be whiffing/failing to convert on chances quite often early on.

Is this year's version the player we can expect him to be going forward or will he be closer to the 54 goal version next year?

I mean, Hyman was already a decent goal scorer before last year. Cheechoo went from 9 to 50 in 3 years
Thats because Cheechoo hit his 50+ in only his third year. The 9 goal was his rookie year and he most likely had little ice time.

I think their career looks very similar. Hyman might bounce back but right now it feels very Cheechoo-esque.

They're completely different cases so it's an awkward comparison.

The one similarity is that both of them were good players and good scorers before their big years. Yet this is the part that people ignore when they try to pretend like Thornton made Cheechoo or McDavid made Hyman.

Cheechoo scored 28 goals the year before Thornton. He could have scored at that level for a long time in the league if it were not for severe injuries that ruined his mobility and cut his career short.

Hyman was already scoring at a 30 goal pace in his last couple seasons in Toronto and is now 32 years old.

So you’re suggesting Hyman will be out of the league in 3 years? Just don’t feel like the comparison works

Yeah this seems like a similar case to Chris Kreider. Both good players that have a career year and "regress" to being good players again.

It doesn't. Cheechoo was also severely hampered by a serious knee injury & hernia surgery, which took his skating from "just passable" to "atrocious".

Cheechoo scored 28 goals as a 23 yr old on a team whose leading scorer had 57 points, playing most of the season on the 3rd line with Ricci and Scott Thornton. Continued his good play into the playoffs. Scored 100 goals over the next two years (playoffs included) and even potted 23 once after his injury.

Had he not suffered those injuries, he probably had a good stretch ahead of him as a grind-y top 6 winger with serious goal scoring upside.
