Imagine what all the future GM's will think about these albatross long term contracts the Oilers are signing. Pretty much guaranteed to be buyout worthy contract at some point.

We just spent 40M on a longterm contract for a 29yr old player who has a career peak of 40pts. We're paying heavily just for a third. My lord.

I'm fine with signing Hyman, it might not age well, and IMO today it seems to be 1m overpaid, with Free agency that can be expected. But that's not to say he doesn't take off like a rocket on a Mcdavid or Draisitl line and look like a steal.

Either way we know we're getting 40-50 points and potentially way more.

I'll be mad in 5-6 years :P We're a better team today.

I think you guys are going to love Hyman. An extremely hard worker, he's improved a ton since he first came up. Very fast, a relentless forechecker and not afraid to take punishment to park himself in front of the net. Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him net multiple 30+ goal seasons next to McDavid.

Imagine it turns into a Jamie Benn
That’d be the sweetest f*** you to Leaf fans

I hope karma makes it happen
You guys will like Hyman for the first few years of the contract. He's a guy who shows up every shift and retrieves pucks like no other. What he lacks in skill, he makes up in heart.

There is next to no chance he ends up like Jamie Benn. If those are your expectations you'll be sorely disappointed. Hyman is a very low skill player who earns everything he has. He could have settled to be a regular 4th line tweener, but instead willed himself into a top 6 player.

The biggest question mark is how long he can keep it up. Injuries have started to creep up on him and, with his style of play, could occur more often. I have a feeling that once his health starts to fade his game will regress very quickly due to his lack of skill.

Best of luck to him! He was great the past 2 years!

Shocked on you being very negative.... Hyperbolic post. Also disingenuous,. Hyman has been on 30 goal, 60 pt pace the last two years..shott seasons...

Leafs fan... hate the contract love the player. You folks will love him too though especially for the first few years. Dude just works hard. I've never seen hyman take a shift off except for the last two playoffs. (But thats cus he was injured and was visibly not the same). Enjoy folks!

I was talking about the 5th round pick that Dubas turned down in order to prevent the Oilers from getting a better deal

Since Benn was a 5th round pick himself I said imagine if that pick that Dubas turned down out of spite turned into an all star

Yeah I'm ecstatic on the Barrie signing and I like the Foegele trade, a lot. But specious of you to always call out others posts. All you do here.

Hyman being on pace is worth nothing. He's had injury trouble and he's 29yrs old to START this contract. Thats a bad idea anytime going 7yrs.

I mean like I said we just threw 40M at a topsix 3rd (he's no better than that) who has a career 80 goals. This is a contract assuming that somehow Hyman defies age odds and continues to produce even at 40pt season levels. While playing with superstars.

For clarity I quite like Hyman the player. Thought he was one of the Leafs better players in playoffs particularly and a guy that has a pretty good work ethic and activity around net. That said its not a good contract. We're essentially paying 4oM to hope to get say 3-4good seasons left out of an aging player that has to have his health and top speed to be effective, and that has already suffered injury problems.

The likelihood, despite what Hyman has looked like in recent seasons (good) is a bad contract result. Not even guessing. This contract will be a future GM's buyout problem.

I mean even assuming optimistically that we get 5 good years out of this contract we're paying Draisaitl type money for that. the last end of this contract will be hard to look at.

This is one of those contracts you're better off not making.

Congrats guys! You will love him. He gives his all 100% and doesn't take his foot off the gas. He also has proven he can keep up with the top talent or adapt to however you decide to use him. Is the contract long? Yes, probably 2-3 years longer than I would have been comfortable giving him. But that's the name of the game on UFA Day! You can worry about the later years, well... later. But for now you will love the player and what he brings to your team. He's earned the pay raise (I think his value was worth going 6 million on a short deal (2 years) or 5.5-5.75 (4 years), so 5.5 isn't far off from what he's worth!). But congrats and best of luck to you guys and Zach!

I agree. Although hyman was shite in the playoffs. Having said that I think he is exactly what you guys are missing. At least enjoy it for the next three seasons. Should be fun having him ride shotgun to mcjesus.

In order to have him for the next 4 seasons, which is our window to win with McDrai under contract, we needed go give him the extra 3 on his contract. Who knows what this team will look like and how Zach will be playing by that time, but these are the kind of risks that sometimes need to be made. Personally, I'm glad we took a chance on this.

You're not wrong about this contract but I guarantee that you'll love this player. He's the exact type of player that you tend to like, I think. This guy isn't a Lucic or Neal. This guy is full throttle forechecking ferocity with an underrated goal scoring touch around the net plus he's pretty good defensively as well which fits perfectly with McDavid allowing him a little more offensive freedom.

I think its safe to assume big increases in the cap down the line with the return to normal from Covid and the new TV contract coming in.

Hyman is my favorite Leaf, which isn't saying much. heh, I appreciate his Ryan Smyth type tenacity(but in no way comparable as a goal scorer) that hes' currently displaying but unlike Smyth, the Hyman ascendency has been short lived, late bloomed, and the prognosis of such a player is he doesn't have a long good career. We've caught Hyman at the top of his arc, but at an age where decline is almost a given. In reality 5yrs ago nobody knew who this guy even was. 5yrs from now everybody will be wondering why this contract was signed. Not even guessing.

I don't assume anything about where the world economy is headed or where pro sports or hockey money is headed. Its far from certain. In the world I live in I walk down every block and former business windows are shuttered. Anyway that being way beyond this thread but we can't ssume that current overpay long contracts are going to be normalized by cap increases. That is conjecture.

I love this.
Zach Hyman is an Edmonton Oiler

Wonder what jersey # he'll want since we already retired Messiers number

Usually guys just reverse the number when their usual is not available, so he should just do that?
