i'm ready to start calling BS on the "Jones is too small" shtick.

he won tons of battles yesterday against bigger players. very Fox-esque. He took an absolute wallop of a hit from Pastrnak (one that took Pastrnak himself out of the play) and kept skating and led the rush like nothing happened.

he's just been really impressive lately.

Was too small/weak. Very clear he has put in work in the gym, the video room and on the ice. He is both stronger and using leverage better. He is almost like a TDL acquisition with how much he's grown as a scratch for 90% of the year.

Give me Jones over Gus for the playoffs. Feel like there is so much more defensively responsible plays coming from him. Gus will try and make something happen when Jones moves the puck to the next guy because it is the correct play.

One thing that has happened under Laviolette is that if the older guys that are here for a specific role can no longer fill it better than the young guy, they sit. Happened with Bonino and Pitlick. Gus is here for 1 season and Jones can be here for a while. This run for Jones has to open Laviolette's eyes on how much he's progressed and what his role can be come Game 83.

Players like Jones are much better in the offensive zone. The more offensive minded the Rangers are, the better Jones will be. He is a very smart player like Fox and knows how to keep composure under pressure and make the nifty plays, keeping the puck in play. Its when the team is pinned in the zone the flaws start to come out, not just Jones, but for everyone. I prefer skill over brawn personally, but understand you need both. Its a good problem to have the depth we do, but Im liking our current D core more than Trouba and Lindgren.
To me, Trouba and Lindgren are your "hard nosed" warriors but how many times do they kill the play in the offensive zone with a weak shot on net, or rimming around the boards. Fox, Miller, Jones, Gus, they all make those quick passes to make the play. I just hope they dont cut the skill out. The game is quicker than it used to be, the game requires more skill.

Good points. There's still the old guard concept, but I do think in the new NHL having 6 skilled guys who can effectively move the puck may be where we're headed.

Shame for some guys who played this way back in the day and were marginalized.

If you read Larry Brooks he is thinking that with the emergence of Mancini we could see Jones head back upstairs upon the return of Ryan Lindgren. That would be a shame for Zac.

I know Lindgren is going to draw in at someone's expense but it really shouldn't be Jones. Jones has definitely been better than Mancini to this point.

It's real early still but so far in the two games played Jones ice time 17:29 and 15:26 there have been no goals scored against us when he's been on the ice. There hasn't been a lot of offense but he moves the puck very well but I like defensemen who defend well whether they're big, small, have an offensive game or not and in that respect the first order of business for any D I have no complaints as far as Zac goes.

The first game all the D were pretty much on point. The last one some of our guys were getting picked apart by the speed and movement and pin point passing of the Utah team. There were also some brainfart plays particularly Miller's trying to be too cute behind the back giveaway pass to Kerfoot that led to Keller's first goal. Looking again at the game winner again with Miller---he didn't play that great but I'd almost fault Mika for drifting away from the goal crease allowing Keller to move right in on the goalie and leaving Miller to deal with both Keller and no one covering Schmaltz on the other side of the net. I don't know if Lafreniere was late coming into the play (just changing with Kreider?) to cover Utah's high man that drew Mika away but it was a bad decision on his part anyway.

Jones is doing all of the little things well that Gustafsson did well last season before falling off a cliff.

For someone who sat a ton of games, put in the work, and didn’t complain one bit, I’m rooting hard for him. Still unsure what the ceiling is for him, but I’m happy he’s been getting a chance to earn a permanent spot

That's why I don't read him. That makes no sense. Once Lindgren is back, there's no reason to carry 8 dmen and continue to use LTIR. Mancini is waiver exempt and will almost certainly be sent down. The only other option is to send down one of our exempt forwards (Cuylle, Rempe, Edstrom), but then we'd have no spare forwards until Vesey comes back.
