The core is saving Berube's butt this season, and the previous guy did better with the same kind of set up. Bad excuse.
Willy and JT are producing at exactly the same rate this year as they did over the previous 4, while Mitch is up a bit and Matty is down more. Their current pace is higher than either of the last two seasons, despite more missed games to critical players.

But you continue with your fantasy about Keefe.

I’m no Keefe supporter, but I don’t see anything different from Bérubé. They have much better goaltending, plus Tanev on the backend.

If I’m not mistaken their defensive metrics are worse this year than previous years, against an arguably weaker Eastern Conference.

I guess we will see if anything different happens in the postseason.

I think a large part of that is the injuries (including injuries to our better goalies). Last year at this time Matty and Mitch had 70 goals between them - now they have 36, I think that has more to do with injuries than style of coaching.

My biggest complaint is his inability to address the Matty/Mitch situation.

Style changes take a while, especially with all the injuries, so I'm willing to wait to see if the playoff results are better.

The core 4 are a massive part of the reason we've been as good as we have. This is far from the first time we've faced injuries, and if we're worried about injuries, we shouldn't be playing a system that brings higher injury risk. The team is currently on pace for the second worst season of the last 5 years (was on pace for the worst before last night), and they have some of the worst underlying metrics that we've had in the Matthews era.

Ignoring facts (like the ones I just provided) again?

Why do you insist in trying to ruin good debates with your BS?

I didn't ignore anything. You're the one making factually incorrect statements about our pace. Nothing you said changes anything I said, and your personal attacks are the only thing ruining good debates.

Except that I provided a fact that you ignored and instead returned an incorrect one.

I'll be considerate of the other posters and end this waste of time.

Something I think we have all noticed over the past couple of years... this team (seemingly) plays better when one of the core is out of the lineup. We could argue about which player is most important, but the fact they do not miss one of them is clear by their record.

I have felt this way for a long time, that the coaching staff makes little difference with this core. The fact is the core as it is assembled will not lead to the ultimate success, the Cup.

I often think how good the team depth would be with 11+ million available to spend on the middle 6.

I, like most people, and certainly the MLSE management group, love each of these players. But I do feel like running in back while changing the fringes has been proven not to work.

If the core is to be kept together, I think the one thing that has to become the norm is for Matthews and Marner to NOT play together 5-on-5. I have said before and will yell it again, that playing them together reduces the benefit you get from each of them. Matthews without Marner is so much more of a beast! Carries the puck more, and makes those around him better. Mitch does the same, but Matthews doesn't need it.

If this coaching staff is to have an impact, I feel it needs to be to commit to splitting those two up.
