Something I think we have all noticed over the past couple of years... this team (seemingly) plays better when one of the core is out of the lineup. We could argue about which player is most important, but the fact they do not miss one of them is clear by their record.
I have felt this way for a long time, that the coaching staff makes little difference with this core. The fact is the core as it is assembled will not lead to the ultimate success, the Cup.
I often think how good the team depth would be with 11+ million available to spend on the middle 6.
I, like most people, and certainly the MLSE management group, love each of these players. But I do feel like running in back while changing the fringes has been proven not to work.
If the core is to be kept together, I think the one thing that has to become the norm is for Matthews and Marner to NOT play together 5-on-5. I have said before and will yell it again, that playing them together reduces the benefit you get from each of them. Matthews without Marner is so much more of a beast! Carries the puck more, and makes those around him better. Mitch does the same, but Matthews doesn't need it.
If this coaching staff is to have an impact, I feel it needs to be to commit to splitting those two up.
