Marner could have been moved. Nylander didn't need to be paid 11.5. Apparantly they asked around and didn't like the return which should have been a red flag about the contract ask.

Matthews was just resigned as the higheat paid under Tre. For 4 years at that.

Yup and the leafs could never accept that less is more so getting an actual return for Marner is better than letting him walk. They don’t have the guts to do what needs to be done because it’s Toronto. The media will absolutely torch them and it’s so high pressure.

Too early.

So far the team really hasn’t been any better than prior years. We’ve just had better goaltending. However we haven’t been able to translate the success to the playoffs before so we’ll see if this year we can.

They were entertaining early in the season but they’re playing now like they’re ready to call it a year and get into the off season.

Even assuming there was no edict from Shanahan, Tre had a month at best to assess the situation and negotiate a good trade for Marner.

He signed the two most important players. Yes, he overpaid somewhat, but that was almost inevitable considering the bigger overpayments of his predecessor.

If the premise of Berube was that he would come in here and bend the team to his will and reshape its soul and character, it feels the reverse has happened and more and more like he's acclimatized to the Maple Leaf way. That feel good, non offensive, nurturing low friction, inconsistent compete vibe, minimal self critique continues. Sure they can play the perfect Berube game once in a while, but the standards aren't really different than before.

The impact of dump and chase seems overstated in the way it has short circuited the team's skill and offense and production. Feels like it has exposed a lack of conditioning among many players.

Generally it feels like Ovechkin may have been right. Same team, new coach.

Look at the last 2 months, Berube's system has been overruled by how the team prefers to play. It's not been Berube hockey the last 2 months, not even close. It's more and more evidence that it's really the core who decides how things go. Call out or upset Matthews and your ass is getting kicked out the door.

All that matters is playoff results... and I can't really judge that yet, can I? It bothers me some that they don't put a full effort in at times. But, if he can get them to play in the playoffs... that's fine by me. I wasn't looking forward to a President's trophy, give me some playoff success.

All that matters is playoff results... and I can't really judge that yet, can I? It bothers me some that they don't put a full effort in at times. But, if he can get them to play in the playoffs... that's fine by me. I wasn't looking forward to a President's trophy, give me some playoff success.

Ultimately playoff success yes.

Some key markers for reg season:

1. A division title to avoid a difficult 2/3 series which has been a massive stumbling block for us. That has slipped away and the usual suspects are lurking around the 3 spot.
2. Improve the overall team defense - Berube has done it his way.. Bigger, stronger back end and more North South play. He's accomplished this while disconnecting the forwards from the D.. Will that work in the playoffs? Maybe if.....
3. 2 could be ok if the Powerplay is functional. Some gains made with Rielly off it and Knies to the net front. I was trying to think of a Cup winner that had a 5 forward PP and I couldn't... so jury is out if we can sustain this.
4. PK - are we sure Matthews is a guy we want here? I do wonder if there won't be a trade for a bottom 6 player that can both chip in on offense and kill a penalty. I don't mind that we play a wedge and then pressure hard in the low quadrants. A better shot blocker than Timmons for PK 2 should be on the shopping list. PK's are also elevated or downgraded by ....
5. Goaltending - Been pretty terrific and he's made the right decision to ride Woll here.
6. Miscellaneous - Line matching, line juggling, faceoff plays, etc... I haven't seen much yet but maybe the coach in him will come out for playoff time.

I am not sold yet.. Playoffs will certainly tell the tale and there is no way Berube gets 5 years if we have to watch this crap in the reg season and then not win at playoff time. I would say we will all sacrifice some reg season entertainment to win something.

There is certainly a disconnect between the players and Berube. There is certainly a lack of depth performance. There is certainly a lack of accountability coming from Berube. There is certainly massive issues with Savard and his special teams.

Ask me after the playoffs but realistically if they flame out again under their third coach it’s a roster construction issue with a failing core group that’s the common denominator and that needs to be changed.

The are trying to stick a square peg in a round hole IMHO
Scoring is still a issue and made worse with dump and chase system.
Some of Tre signings were just waste of cap dollars (Reaves,Domi etc) and most of our D have no offensive awareness IMHO, which hinders scoring.

I dont think Mathews is a big fan of this system.

We will only find out if this was all worth it in the playoffs and our success there. IMHO we better hope our goalies are hot as scoring will again be a issue for us in the playoffs.

But then again. The playoffs is just a different game because the rules change. Only professional sport that does this. Goons are more valuable than skill.
