Your team's 3 worst and 3 best contracts

Best:
Tage Thompson
I feel like this doesn't need an explanation at this point lmao.
Alex Tuch
Top two-way winger signed for 4.75M AAV for the next 3 years, taking him exactly to age 30. Going to be a very tough decision when it comes to his next contract but for now it's incredible value.
Casey Mittelstadt
Getting a year and a half of 1C calibre play for 2.5M AAV is a dream that we might unfortunately might not be able to take full advantage of. He's still RFA so we should be able to get another decent value deal here.

Worst:
Connor Clifton
I think he'll be fine but oof, so far he has not looked like anything but a replacement level bottom pair guy.
Victor Olofsson
Only one year left at 4.75M and I don't think he's been as bad as some people would have you believe but still a rough deal
Jacob Bryson
1.85M AAV for an AHL level player...

Ottawa.

Worst at the start of the year :

Dorion
Smith
Joseph

Worst now

Smith
Chabot
Kubalik

But its not actually like the Chabot and Kubalik contracts are bad, just with Sanderson, Chychrun and Brannstrom + Kleven in the wings its a huge contract for minutes we can somewhat fill with existing personnel. Ottawa is a better with Chabot in the lineup, but not 8M better. Kubalik as a third liner brings little. Again not really his fault and 2.5M for a 40-50 point player on a second line would be good, its just not going to be on Ottawas second line.

Best

Chychrun
Joseph (great start)
Tarasenko

Best
Verhagae
Barkov
Forsling

HM
Tkachuk

Worst
Bob
Knight

I would replace Barkov with Montour, even though he's an UFA at the end of the year.
Barkov is a stud, but is paid fairly for what he brings.
Montour put up 70+ points and some clutch points in the playoffs at a 3.5 mil cap hit.

I think ERod does a lot of things well, but 4 years of stone hands when this team will be tight to the cap for the next few years may not be the best value.

Surprisingly, Minnesota doesn't have a ton of bad ones that don't expire at year end.

If I could re-do 3 right now, they'd probably be:
Spurgeon - knock ~$1M off per year
Foligno - knock ~$1M off per year and 1 year off the end of his extension
Maybe just get rid of Merrill altogether

The best:
Eriksson Ek
Boldy
Probably Johansson at $2M, even if it's only for 1 more year after this.

Can't really put Kaprizov in "best" because I'm not a fan of when it expires. Brodin is "fair". I have a feeling Hartman is going to find himself as a #3C or middle 6 winger by next year, so $4M is probably "fair" for that.

Seguin
{gap}
Lindell and Marchment

Seguin may be worth $4.75m this year but he’s def not worth $9.5m for the next 4 seasons. Massively overpaid amd with term. Lindell and Marchment are just overpaid by $2m ea and Marchment is signed for a year or 2 too long as well. Benn’s resurgence and only 1.75 years remaining keeps him off

Hintz, Heiskanen, and Robertson. Long term deals in the $8’s for H&H is a steal, and 3 more years of affordable Robo gets the nod over Duchene’s 1yr bargain deal

Best:
1) Thompson
2) Theodore
3) Eichel (not clear thoug
Worst:
1) Martinez
2) Pietrangelo (age)
3) Kolesar
Dishonorable Mention: Stephenson
I'd agree on Thompson and Theodore, I'd scratch Eichel and I'd probably put Karlsson, 5.9 for everything he does, is still a steal in my book. As for worst, Kolesar at 1.4 isn't the worst thing in the world and despite his struggles this season, Chandler at 2.75 isn't bad, and with Martinez with all 3 of those contracts expiring at the end of the season, I couldn't make the case for them being the worst.
Pietrangelo has the potential to be the worst due to age, as does Mark Stone age and injury concerns. 3rd is a coin flip, because if they stay on LTIR who cares what their contract is, but we are likely in deep doo doo if Lehner ever tried to come back.

Best
1) Thompson
2) Theodore
3) Karlsson

Worst
1) Pie (age)
2) Stone (age/injury)
3) Lehner if he came off LTIR

For the Jackets:

Worst: Severson, Gudbranson, Elvis. None of them are playing badly right now but those deals are ridiculous.

Best: Jenner, Danforth, and Provorov. Provorov has been an absolute steal at $4.725m.

No arguments here especially with your emphasis on risk. I’m optimistic we’ll get flat overall value at least for the remainder of Stone/Pietrangelo contracts but who knows. Realistically, Stephenson isn’t contending for a bottom spot but I think his value has fallen a lot, looks lazy this season.

Kreider $6.5M
Shesterkin
Fox/Panarin both big boy contracts but worth it

Goodrow
Zibanejad/Trouba but not really bad

Before the season, I would have said :
Least ideal were : Boeser, Myers, Miller..
Best : EP40, , Kuzmenko, Hughes

Now...
Best : Demko, Hughes, EP40
Least ideal : Garland, Beauvillier, OEL-buyout

Feels good...

As of today:

Best:

1. Nylander
2. Liljegren
3. Matthews

Worst:

1. Reaves
2. Bertuzzi
3. Tavares*

*: and yes I realize he’s a very good player.

Avs:

Makar
Byram
O'Connor

Worst

Wood
Manson
Johansen
I`d argue Rantanen should be up among the 3 best? 11gp 8g 9a 17p for 9,25M isnt it? Last 2 seasons 157gp 91g 106a 197p... You actually take O`Connor over Rantanen contracts included?

Jets

Best
Morrissey 6.25 until 27/28
Ehlers 6.0 until 24/25
Connor 7.1 until 25/26

Worst
Schmidt 5.95 until 24/25
Scheifele 8.5 until 30/31
Hellebuyck 8.5 until 30/31

Best:

Fox @ 9.5 top 5 d-man worth it

Kreider @ 6.5 best deflector in the league

Shesterkin @ 5.66 for a top 3 goalie is solid but his next contract is gonna be very pricey/risky/ugly

Honorable Mention: Lindgren @ 3

Worst:

Trouba @ 8, he hasn’t been bad or awful he’s just overpaid. He’s likely worth 5-6 a year in real value.

Goodrow @ 3.6, too pricey and too long. Paid for the experience

Trochek @ 5.65, the cap hit isn’t awful for a 50-60 point center who plays a solid 2 way game with an edge but it’s the amount of years and he’s been bumped down to the “third line”.

Indifferent on Panarin, he’s been one of the top point producing wingers since joining the Rangers but his playoffs have sucked.

All assuming non-ELC:

Worst:
PLD - too much money at max term for an inconsistent center who averages 60ish points a season

Doughty - playing better this season, but he's over 30 and has a cap hit of $11 million for the next 4 seasons. I worry how well it will age

Danault - I actually really like him as a player, but with Kopitar re-signed and the acquisition of another center, he's making $5.5 million for the next 4 years to be a third-line center.

Best:
Anderson - 8 years a little over $4 million for a top-4 defenseman

Kempe - he's had a rough start, but he scored 41 goals last season, and is signed for two more seasons after this one at $5.5 million

Fiala - he's been awful this season. Despite that, he's still leading the team in scoring and could actually be the first player on the Kings to outscore a healthy, non-rookie Kopitar. Signed for 6 years at about $7.9 million
The Doughty contract will age far better if theŷ reduce his icetime, he’s leading the league in TOI which is crazy for his age. He’s playing very well though and currently doing so at an Elite level, whilst being given a bit more freedom offensively. That doesn’t mean he’s not over paid though… 9M would be more reasonable.
